Hello everyone! I'm lorentm, a passionate digital artist, and today I want to share with you my latest project for the Splinterlands weekly art contest. I'm very excited to participate again in this amazing initiative that always motivates me to explore and challenge my creativity.
For this week, I decided to reimagine the "Scavo Chemist" character with a special twist: anime style! I love how this style can infuse life and dynamism into characters, and I felt it was the perfect choice to highlight the unique characteristics of Scavo Chemist.
The Realm of Silence, where Scavo dwells, is a fascinating and mysterious region located in the depths of Praetoria. This place is home to many creatures that spend their entire lives there, including the Scavo. Originally simple moles, exposure to toxic volcano gas transformed them, giving them superior intelligence. These beings not only learned to adapt to their hostile environment, but also became expert chemists. They use their knowledge to develop remedies that mitigate the effects of plague on animals and people, as well as create chemical weapons that can weaken their enemies.
In my illustration, I wanted to capture Scavo Chemist in the midst of a scientific experiment. This anthropomorphic mole is equipped with safety goggles and a lab coat, features that underscore his role as a chemist. In one hand he holds a flask with a bubbling green liquid and in the other, a test tube with the same substance. The laboratory utensils and the effervescence of the liquid suggest that it is in the midst of an intriguing chemical reaction. The square tiled background gives an added touch of authenticity, placing it in a laboratory setting.
Creating this work has been an incredibly rewarding experience. I love how the anime style allows for emotions and actions to be expressed in a vibrant and dynamic way. Originalmente simples topos, la exposición al gas tóxico del volcán los transformó, otorgándoles una inteligencia superior. En mi ilustración, quise capturar a Scavo Chemist en pleno proceso de un experimento científico. Este topo antropomórfico está equipado con gafas de seguridad y una bata de laboratorio, características que subrayan su rol como químico. En una mano sostiene un matraz con un líquido verde burbujeante y en la otra, un tubo de ensayo con la misma sustancia. Los utensilios de laboratorio y la efervescencia del líquido sugieren que está en medio de una reacción química intrigante. El fondo con azulejos cuadrados da un toque adicional de autenticidad, situándolo en un entorno de laboratorio.
Crear esta obra ha sido una experiencia increíblemente gratificante. Me encanta cómo el estilo anime permite expresar emociones y acciones de manera vibrante y dinámica. The Realm of Silence lies deep beneath Praetoria. It is home to many creatures who live there all their lives. One such culture is the Scavo. This mole species became corrupted by the toxic gas in the volcano. They became highly intelligent and discovered ways to reduce the impact of the blight on animals and people. The most astute of them became chemists and learned how to create cures and bottle the gas to either help their allies or weaken their opponents.
El Reino del Silencio se encuentra en las profundidades de Praetoria. Es el hogar de muchas criaturas que viven allí toda su vida. Una de ellas es el Scavo. Esta especie de topo se corrompió por el gas tóxico del volcán. Se volvieron muy inteligentes y descubrieron formas de reducir el impacto de la plaga sobre los animales y las personas. Los más astutos se convirtieron en químicos y aprendieron a crear curas y embotellar el gas para ayudar a sus aliados o debilitar a sus oponentes.
Process / Proceso
It all starts with the sketch. This is the freest and most spontaneous stage, where ideas flow and are quickly captured on the digital canvas. I took my graphic tablet and started to draw light and loose lines, defining the basic shapes of the character. At this stage, it is crucial to capture the desired pose and expression. I wanted Scavo Chemist to convey concentration and scientific curiosity, so I made sure his posture and gestures reflected that.
Once I was satisfied with the sketch, I moved on to outlining. This step requires more precision and patience. I used a finer brush to draw clear and defined lines, giving shape and detail to the character. Each stroke is important to highlight Scavo Chemist's unique features, such as his safety glasses and lab coat. I also detailed the flasks with the bubbling green liquid and lab utensils, elements that are essential to telling the visual story of this character.
With the outlining complete, it's time to bring the drawing to life through coloring. I chose a color palette that complemented the anime style, using vibrant and contrasting tones. I began by applying the base colors, making sure that each part of the character and objects had a corresponding color. The bubbly green of the liquid in the vials needed to stand out, so I used a bright hue that would catch the eye.
After applying the base colors, the next step is to apply shadows and highlights to add depth and realism. I used darker tones for the shadow areas, following an imaginary light source to maintain consistency. The shadows help give volume and three-dimensionality to the character and objects. Then, I added the highlights to the areas that catch the most light, such as the edges of the bubbling liquid and the parts of the lab coat that reflect the light. These final touches of light and shadow really make the illustration jump off the canvas and take on a life of its own.
Each of these steps is crucial to the final result. From the initial sketch to the final touches of shadows and highlights, each stage contributes to building a cohesive and expressive work. I hope this glimpse into the creation process has given you a better understanding of how I transformed Scavo Chemist into a vibrant anime-style illustration.

Todo comienza con el boceto. Esta es la etapa más libre y espontánea, donde las ideas fluyen y se plasman de manera rápida en el lienzo digital. Tomé mi tableta gráfica y comencé a trazar líneas ligeras y sueltas, definiendo las formas básicas del personaje. En esta fase, es crucial captar la pose y la expresión deseadas. Quería que Scavo Chemist transmitiera concentración y curiosidad científica, así que me aseguré de que su postura y gestos reflejaran eso.
Una vez satisfecha con el boceto, pasé al delineado. Este paso requiere más precisión y paciencia. Utilicé un pincel más fino para trazar líneas claras y definidas, dando forma y detalle al personaje. Cada trazo es importante para resaltar las características únicas de Scavo Chemist, como sus gafas de seguridad y la bata de laboratorio. También detallé los frascos con el líquido verde burbujeante y los utensilios de laboratorio, elementos que son esenciales para contar la historia visual de este personaje.
Con el delineado completo, llega el momento de dar vida al dibujo a través del coloreado. Elegí una paleta de colores que complementara el estilo anime, utilizando tonos vibrantes y contrastantes. Empecé aplicando los colores base, asegurándome de que cada parte del personaje y los objetos tuvieran su color correspondiente. El verde burbujeante del líquido en los frascos debía destacar, así que utilicé un tono brillante que captara la atención.
Después de aplicar los colores base, el siguiente paso es aplicar sombras y brillos para añadir profundidad y realismo. Utilicé tonos más oscuros para las áreas en sombra, siguiendo una fuente de luz imaginaria para mantener la consistencia. Las sombras ayudan a darle volumen y tridimensionalidad al personaje y los objetos. Luego, añadí los brillos en las áreas que captan más luz, como los bordes del líquido burbujeante y las partes de la bata de laboratorio que reflejan la luz. Estos toques finales de luz y sombra realmente hacen que la ilustración salte del lienzo y adquiera vida propia.
Cada uno de estos pasos es crucial para el resultado final. Desde el boceto inicial hasta los toques finales de sombras y brillos, cada etapa contribuye a construir una obra coherente y expresiva.
