On April 8th of this year, a total solar eclipse took place over large parts of Mexico and the USA and for the first time in my life I had the chance to experience one myself. When I found out about the cosmic event, I already knew that I would be in Mexico at the time and as my girlfriend and I were planning a beach vacation anyway, we decided to go to the coastal town of Mazatlán in the state of Sinaloa to watch the spectacle. In this post, I'll tell you about our impressions of it.
Am 8. April dieses Jahres fand über weiten Teilen von Mexiko und den USA eine totale Sonnenfinsternis statt und zum ersten Mal in meinem Leben hatte ich die Chance, eine solche selbst mitzuerleben. Als ich von dem kosmischen Ereignis erfuhr, wusste ich bereits, dass ich zu dieser Zeit in Mexiko sein würde und da meine Freundin und ich sowieso einen Strandurlaub planten, entschieden wir uns für die Küstenstadt Mazatlán im Bundesstaat Sinaloa, um das Himmelsspektakel mitverfolgen zu können. In diesem Beitrag berichte ich euch von unseren Eindrücken davon.
After arriving by bus from Durango, we checked into our hotel, whose balcony and roof terrace were already the first highlights. Here we were able to admire a fantastic sunset on the evening before the solar eclipse. Due to the western orientation of the beach, the sun seems to sink into the sea in Mazatlán, which of course looks fantastic when the weather is right. We went to bed a little nervous because of the mixed weather forecast for the next day, but I couldn't sleep very well because of all the excitement.
Nachdem wir mit dem Bus von Durango angereist waren, checkten wir in unser Hotel ein, dessen Balkon und Dachterasse bereits die ersten Highlights waren. Hier konnten wir am Vorabend der Sonnenfinsternis bereits einen traumhaften Sonnenuntergang bewundern. Aufgrund der westlichen Ausrichtung des Strandes, versinkt die Sonne in Mazatlán scheinbar im Meer, was bei entsprechendem Wetter natürlich fantastisch aussieht. Etwas nervös aufgrund der durchwachsenen Wettervorhersage für den nächsten Tag gingen wir ins Bett, doch so wirklich gut konnte ich vor lauter Aufregung nicht schlafen.
In the morning, of course, we immediately looked up at the sky and, as expected, it was anything but cloudless. Not being able to see the solar eclipse due to an overcast sky was my absolute nightmare. Now we had to decide whether we wanted to experience the event in peace and quiet from the hotel with a great view, or in the middle of the hustle and bustle of the promenade. We opted for the second option, as we thought it would be more atmospheric to share these special moments with as many other people as possible. So we walked towards the Malecón - Mazatlán's beach promenade.
Am Morgen richteten sich unsere Blicke natürlich sofort zum Himmel und wie erwartet war es leider alles andere als wolkenlos. Die Sonnenfinsternis aufgrund von bedecktem Himmel nicht zu sehen war meine absolute Horrorvorstellung. Nun mussten wir uns auch entscheiden, ob wir das Ereignis in Ruhe vom Hotel mit toller Aussicht, oder inmitten des Troubels der Flaniermeile miterleben wollten. Wir entschiedne uns für die zweite Option, da wir es uns einfach stimmungsvoller vorstellten, diese besonderen Momente mit möglichst vielen anderen Menschen zu teilen. Also spazierten wir in Richtung des Malecón – der Strandpromenade von Mazatlán.
When the partial phase of the solar eclipse began, we were finally able to use the special glasses we had already bought in Durango. Sometimes I held the glasses in front of my smartphone camera to take a few photos, but I soon realized that this didn't produce any photographically valuable results. However, I had decided not to bother with photography during the solar eclipse, but to enjoy it to the full anyway. The atmosphere among the thousands of tourists was just as exuberant as it was peaceful and our excitement grew as it got darker and darker until the moon finally covered the sun completely. Despite a slight haze of clouds, we could see everything clearly.
Als die partielle Phase der Sonnenfinsternis begann, konnten wir endlich unsere Spezialbrillen verwenden, die wir bereits in Durango gekauft hatten. Teilweise hielt ich die Brille für ein paar Fotos vor meine Smartphone-Kamera, doch ich merkte recht schnell, dass das für keine fotografisch wertvollen Ergebnisse sorgte. Ich hatte mir aber ohnehin vorgenommen, mich während der Sonnenfinsternis nicht mit der Fotografie zu beschäftigen, sondern sie voll und ganz zu genießen. Die Stimmung unter den tausenden Touristen war übrigens genauso ausgelassen, wie friedlich und unsere Aufregung stieg, als es immer dunkler wurde, bis der Mond schließlich die Sonne komplett verdeckte. Trotz leichter Schleierwolken konnten wir alles klar und deutlich erkennen.
The four minutes of totality were unforgettable and actually indescribable. The beginning of the total phase felt to me like a sunset in fast motion and as if I was being pulled into the sun at high speed. I was simply speechless, while my girlfriend couldn't stop screaming. We both had tears in our eyes. The solar eclipse was simply unlike anything we had seen or experienced before. When the sun came out again and we sat down to lunch afterwards, we were still trying to process our impressions and barely spoke a word to each other.
Die vier Minuten der Totalität waren unvergesslich und eigentlich auch unbeschreiblich. Der Beginn der totalen Phase fühlte sich für mich wie ein Sonnenuntergang im Zeitraffer an und als würde ich mit hoher Geschwindigkeit in die Sonne hineingezogen werden. Ich war einfach nur sprachlos, während meine Freundin nicht mehr aufhören konnte, zu schreien. Wir beide hatten Tränen in den Augen. Die Sonnenfinsternis war einfach mit nichts vergleichbar, was wir zuvor gesehen oder erlebt hatten. Als die Sonne wieder hervorstach und wir im Anschluss beim Mittagessen saßen, waren wir noch immer damit überfordert, unsere Eindrücke zu verarbeiten und sprachen kaum ein Wort miteinander.
As if the universe wanted to bring this special day to a worthy close, we were able to admire an even more beautiful sunset in the evening than the day before. I still get goosebumps today when I think back to the solar eclipse and will definitely never forget April 8, 2024. Fortunately, we still had a few days afterwards to explore the city itself. But I'll tell you about that in the next post.
Als wollte das Universum diesem besonderen Tag noch einen würdigen Abschluss bereiten, konnten wir abends einen noch schöneren Sonnenuntergang bewundern, als am Vortag. Ich bekomme heute noch eine Gänsehaut, wenn ich an die Sonnenfinsternis zurückdenke und werde den 8. April 2024 garantiert niemals vergessen. Zum Glück hatten wir danach noch ein paar Tage, um die Stadt selbst zu erkunden. Doch davon werde ich euch im nächsten Beitrag berichten.
