Postcards from Thailand #40: Papaya's Got a Brand New Bag

in Actifit10 months ago

It has to be said that many trees here are as soft as shite. Take my wife's beloved papaya tree. One little gust of wind and over she goes!

Interesting things about papaya trees is that they're only just trees, being more plant than tree and that they grow, fruit and then die often within the space of under 20 years. Also, they are native to South America and introduced to Thailand over 300 years ago, according to Wikipedia. It's a bloody education here, innit?!

This particular tree was planted by the wife about 12 years ago, but it's looking like it won't make its thirteenth birthday.

Now, you might notice an iron bar if you look closely, more clearly shown in the next picture.

This was the FiL's attempt to stop it from toppling completely and save the last crop from being wasted just about 3 weeks until they can be harvested and I have to give credit where credit is due, this kind of worked.

No doubt I'm going to get the call to 'dig a bigger hole' in the very near future as the trunk hasn't actually snapped so expect an actifit 'digging a hole' post in the near future!

I hope everyone is having a great week.

Best wishes

Until you can pass me one of those through this device, I'm not too impressed with technology.

Weed and papaya will always be waiting for your presence in Thailand. One of my local shops even accept crypto...despite the fact that accepting crypto as a direct payment is strictly illegal unlike the weed which is perfectly legal lol

I had no idea I speak Thai so well.

Lol it's like it's the papaya's fault bearing too many fruits it became so heavy. 🤣 That's actually a pretty tall papaya tho. I don't think I've seen them that tall, they usually are just 7 feet or something, sometimes even smaller. At least the ones I see here haha.

It's like it wants to be a coconut tree but too bad it's papaya. :<

Don't mention the 'c' word on my blog please. I'm sick of bloody coconuts. Picking the damn things up everyday, they make my life a misery! I even bought a wheelbarrow just to collect them in before I burn then to a cinder! Lol

I miss condo days :-(

You both take care and have a brilliant weekend :-)

12 years is decent, over here, papaya trees hardly make it to the 3rd year, especially in urban areas. This might be a bit different in rural areas though.

That's interesting. How tall do they get in 3 years? This is about 6 metres and it's too top heavy now, hence it falling over at the first little breeze!
Hope you're OK fella and thank-you :-)

They grow very tall, but probably start getting fruits from like one year. I think there might be different spices though, but I generally feel that papaya trees aren't usually strong enough.

There is only one explanation for this, when planting the seeds i think it wasn't buried deep down enough unto the ground.. do you still remember the cm your wife used in planting the seed of the papaya ?
