The Vicar of Wakefield by Oliver Goldsmith

in #books3 months ago

It's the first Monday of the month, so it's time to share a cover from one of the books in my collection.

Published by Macmillan around 1890. Cover and internal artwork credited to Hugh Thomson.

The intricate artwork is cut straight into the hardback itself. I feel I should know what the plant is but I can’t work it out. Anyway, it’s fabulously well done and can you spot the singing bird on the right?

That's pretty. I expect that was an expensive book at the time as most old ones I see have plain covers.

Yes, it's usually the spines in these old ones that gets the extra love. The value placed on these books these days, though, is sadly low, although that makes it cheaper for me to buy them!
