RM Sotheby's Munich Part II : BMW

in #car2 years ago

After seeing the different Mercedes that will be auctioned at the RM Sotheby's sale that is taking place this Saturday (November 26) in Munich in Germany, today we're going to another famous German car brand, BMW. We will make this tour from the most expensive car to the cheapest, and the first one is this beautiful BMW 507 Roadster Series II :

As I already made a post about this car, I'll keep the history short. The BMW 507 was an idea of Max Hoffman that convinced BMW to produce a rival car to the Mercedes 300 SL Roadster and contacted Albrecht von Goertz, a German industrial designer to pen the car. The performance was great too, the 507 could reach 97 kmh in 11 seconds with a top speed of 201 kmh. But the price was too expensive (more than $10,000, the double of Ford Thunderbird or Chevrolet Corvette at this time). The Series II (more space than the Series I) was produced between 1956 and 1959 with only 252 examples.

This example (chassis n°70143) was finished originally in Dolomite Grey and bought by Casa dell’ Automobili in Rome. As I find interesting this building, some information about it. It was ten-story garage called designed by Enrico Bacchetti and built in 1930 to accommodate more than 1000 cars with a superb ramp to the 10th floor. Unfortunately destroyed in 1963.

Back to this BMW 507... When it was restored in the 2000s, it was repainted in cream over a red leather interior. So beautiful car...

1980 BMW M1

1980 BMW M1 01.jpg

The M1 Program started in the middle of 70's to compete against Porsche in the World Sportscar Championship and also during the 24 Hours of Le Mans. Firstly, the development was contracted first with Lamborghini to build the car. But some problems between BMW and the Italian car manufacturer put an end to this collaboration, BMW taking over the project alone. But Italy remains present in this car with the bodywork in fiberglass designed by ItalDesign with one the most famous designer, Giorgetto Giugiaro.

This model was delivered new to the director of the BMW M1 project, Jochen Neerpasch finished in grey over brown leather interior (only 4 cars with this color scheme). In order to have the homologation for competition, this model (chassis n°4301218) is one of the 399 road-going M1. Jochen sold the car : "And this was one of my mistakes in life" (source RM Sotheby's). And I understand it.

1938 BMW 328 Roadster

The BMW 328 was a sports car produced between 1936 and 1940 to 464 examples. The first 328 produced won the Eifelrennen Nürburgring with behind the wheel the German driver Ernst Henne. The beginning of many successes in car racing. The car can reach the 100kmh in just 8.8 seconds, an incredible performance for a pre-war car.

This car was bought in 1937, finished in cream over a black leather interior. Another model of the BMW 328 is also on sale, but this time the version cabriolet :

1938 BMW 327/28 Sport Cabriolet for € 150,000.

Any preference? I prefer the design of the roadster version...

1975 BMW 3.0 CSL Batmobile

1975 BMW 3 CSL 01.jpg

The BMW 3.0 CSL was introduced in 1972 eligible for the European Touring Car Championship. The difference between the model 3.0 CS/CSi was L standing for leicht in German (light) thanks to thinner steel to produce the body. With the aerodynamics package, the model earned the nickname of Batmobile. This package includes the front air dam, the short roof spoiler and the three-piece rear wing.

This model is the last of 57 second-series 3.0 CSL Batmobiles built. I really like the color scheme, finished in white with BMW Motorsport stripes over a black interior. A car that doesn't go unnoticed on the roads 😀

I could have gone on for a long time because a lot of BMW's are for sale including a Z8 and two Z1's, an M3 and M6 or a little more original :

1972 BMW 2002 Cabriolet (€ 50,000)

1959 BMW Isetta 250 (€ 30,000)

What would have been your choice in this selection of BMW?
Today I would have gone with the Batmobile 😀.

Wow that 507 is gorgeous. My favorite by far. Fun post showing design over time from 40's(ish) to 80's. I can appreciate all the different styles but I really love the late 50's look of the 507

Yep beautiful design for the 507, a stroke of genius by designer Albrecht von Goertz.
