Welcome to my Hebrew reading & language series.
Genesis 46:15-25
Last week we saw that Jacob had joined his long lost son Joseph in Mitsraim (Egypt to us) and al his possessions and family had come there with him. They lived out the famine there and grew to be a great nation of their own there.
Today we are starting the head count of who all was living there and who was born to whom. This is not the most exciting of chapters in the Tanakh, but it is the manner in which they memorized the tribes and descendants of the man for whom the country is named. We have all the kids that came from Jacob (Israel) and Leah, sixteen in total.
Then we have the sons of Rachel, Joseph and Benjamin along with their children born in Mitsraim. One would have to guess that little Benjamin had married because he has ten kids named below during his life, Rachel was the mother and grandmother of fourteen in total.
Next week we will finish this head count and begin the particulars of the reunion of Joseph and his Father which will complete the story of the move to Mitsraim and how they met Pharaoh who allowed them to live in Goshen and that will be the end of the chapter. Then there is a bit more on the famine as the story continues.

The sons of Gad: Ziphion, Haggi, Shuni, Ezbon, Eri, Arodi, and Areli. The sons of Asher: Imnah, Ishvah, Ishvi, Beriah, with Serah their sister. And the sons of Beriah: Heber and Malchiel. These are the sons of Zilpah, whom Laban gave to Leah his daughter; and these she bore to Jacob—sixteen persons.
The sons of Rachel, Jacob's wife: Joseph and Benjamin. °And to Joseph in the land of Egypt were born Manasseh and Ephraim, whom Asenath, the daughter of Potiphera the priest of On, bore to him. And the sons of Benjamin: Bela, Becher, Ashbel, Gera, Naaman, Ehi, Rosh, Muppim, Huppim, and Ard. These are the sons of Rachel, who were born to Jacob— fourteen persons in all.
The son of Dan: Hushim. The sons of Naphtali: Jahzeel, Guni, Jezer, and Shillem. These are the sons of Bilhah, whom Laban gave to Rachel his daughter, and these she bore to Jacob — seven persons in all
