Hola amigos de #hivecuba, a continuación les comparto algo que se me ocurrió paseando por la sala, inspirado en conmemoración a la reciente fecha del Día del anciano, fecha que yo como Geriatra no podía dejar pasar por alto. Es mi regalo más honesto (o todo lo poco que pude hacer) para homenajear el momento: probablemente el día de celebrar por la vida.
Hello friends of #hivecuba, below I share with you something that came to me while walking around the living room, inspired in commemoration of the recent date of the Day of the Elderly, a date that I as a Geriatrician could not let pass unnoticed. It is my most honest gift (or as little as I could do) to honor the moment: probably the day to celebrate for life.
Hoy alguien camina a tu lado dándote la mano, mientras tú le das la tuya a tu bastón. Y vas ahora por la acera acompañada de un niño pequeño que tuvo la cortesía de cruzarte la calle. Le das una sonrisa como las de tus diecisiete, que marca tus hoyuelos y borra de tu rostro los pliegues. Así como si tu alegría fuese un vestido de noche que se saca del armario pasados muchos años, al que se le da "un estirón" para salir ya de fiesta. Porque así eres tú: damisela de cabellos de luna, y (parecido a lo que dice Ricardo Arjona) señorita de las siete décadas.
Today someone is walking beside you, shaking your hand, while you shake hands with your cane. And you are now walking down the sidewalk accompanied by a little boy who had the courtesy to cross the street. You give him a smile like those of your seventeen, which marks your dimples and erases the creases from your face. Just as if your joy were an evening dress that you take out of the closet after many years, to which you give "a lift" to go out and party. Because that's how you are: moon-haired damsel, and (similar to what Ricardo Arjona says) lady of the seven decades.
Después de conversar con los niños, que te llaman abuela a pesar de que no tienen vínculos familiares, regresas a casa y te sientas a tejer. Y es como si los hilos los embarraras de recuerdos enredados en la madeja.
After talking with the children, who call you grandmother even though they have no family ties, you return home and sit down to knit. And it is as if the threads are muddy with memories tangled in the skein.
Pero ya estás muy cansada. Por eso te vas a sentar al sofá, pones la tele, y se te olvida hacer el almuerzo porque te pierdes en la novela. Éste es otro cumpleaños, de todos modos. Otro día melancólico de ir al mercado, regar el jazmín del portal, y mirar hacia atrás. Con nostalgia haces lo de siempre, e intentas terminar "La tregua" de Benedetti; pero ya te quedaste dormida en el párrafo de una frase aleatoria:
But you're already too tired. So you go sit on the couch, turn on the TV, and forget to make lunch because you get lost in the soap opera. This is another birthday, anyway. Another melancholy day of going to the market, watering the jasmine on the front porch, and looking back. Nostalgically you do the usual, and try to finish Benedetti's "The Truce"; but you've already fallen asleep in the paragraph of a random sentence:

Ahí entonces se entremezclan la moda de los pantalones campanas de los sesentas y tu primer cigarrillo a los treinta y seis. Y se vuelven lo mismo las celulitis de tus cuarentas que tu primer bebé, que la mala nota en tus últimos exámenes de secundaria o tu graduado con honores en la universidad. Porque eso eres, abuela, (aunque así no lo veas) después de todos esas décadas maravillosas de brillante existencia: víctima de la tercera edad, el crochet más bonito que han tejido las agujas de la vida.
Then, the bell-bottom fashion of the sixties and your first cigarette at thirty-six become intertwined. And the cellulite of your forties becomes the same as your first baby, the bad grade in your last high school exams or your graduation with honors from college. Because that's what you are, grandma, (even if you don't see it that way) after all those wonderful decades of brilliant existence: a victim of old age, the most beautiful crochet knitted by the needles of life.
