No es ningún secreto que, en nuestro día a día, de repente está más presente el color rosa; y que nuestro WhatsApp está inundado de estados con puro corte feminista, empoderador, positivo. Incluso oímos aquel tema de Aqua de hace casi un milenio ("I'm a Barbie girl...") en todas partes, y nos encontramos cantándolo también sin tener un motivo real. Y como sé muy bien que estas cosas nos están ocurriendo a todos actualmente, no hace falta ni siquiera explicar que es por la revolución que ha traído a nuestras vidas la nueva entrega de Barbie, que vio nuestras pantallas el 21 de julio de este año. Pero, realmente, ¿alguna vez has escuchado su verdadera historia? Tan sólo quédate, y aprendamos un poco más del modelo favorito de todos los tiempos para las chicas y bueno también de algún que otro chico seguramente.
It's no secret that, in our daily lives, the color pink is suddenly more present; and that our WhatsApp is flooded with statuses with pure feminist, empowering, positive cut. We even hear that Aqua song from almost a millennium ago ("I'm a Barbie girl...") everywhere, and we find ourselves singing it too without having a real reason. And since I know very well that these things are happening to all of us these days, there's no need to even explain that it's because of the revolution brought into our lives by the new Barbie installment, which saw our screens on July 21 this year. But, really, have you ever heard her true story? Just stick around, and let's learn a little more about the all-time favorite model for girls and well, surely for some guys too.
Comenzaremos hablando de la Alemania de 1952, cuando surge la muñeca rubia Lilli; de figura de ensueño para los estándares de belleza de la época. Formando parte de las tiras de cómicas de Bild, estaba destinada para el entretenimiento del público adulto masculino. Y fue muy exitosa, al punto de llegar a convertirse en una muñeca, de tamaños variables entre los diecinueve y los treinta centímetros. Sin embargo, las cosas cambiarían cuando Ruth Handler paseara ociosamente frente a las vitrinas de una tienda en Suiza, de la mano de su hija, y reparara en el juguete. Así fue como, después de la compra de la muñeca Lilli -gracias a su fascinación con el ideal de independencia y atractivo que derrochaba- llegó en 1959 la propuesta de Barbie (bautizada con el nombre de la hija de Ruth): la oportunidad ideal de conquistar el mercado americano.
We will start talking about 1952 Germany, when the blonde doll Lilli appeared; a dream figure by the beauty standards of the time. As part of the comic strips of Bild, it was intended for the entertainment of the adult male audience. And she was very successful, to the point of becoming a doll, ranging in size from nineteen to thirty centimeters. However, things would change when Ruth Handler idly strolled past the windows of a store in Switzerland, hand in hand with her daughter, and noticed the toy. Thus it was that, after the purchase of the Lilli doll - thanks to her fascination with the ideal of independence and attractiveness that it exuded - in 1959, the Barbie proposal (named after Ruth's daughter) arrived: the ideal opportunity to conquer the American market.
Y, como si se tratara de una predicción del mismo Nostradamus, así fue. Tan sólo en el primer año, luego de la aparición de Barbie (como una réplica casi exacta de su antecesora alemana) en la Feria de Juguetes de Nueva York, la compañía de la que Ruth Handler era cofundadora- Mattel- vende más de trescientas mil unidades del juguete. A modo de curiosidad podemos decir que la primera muñeca Barbie costaba tan sólo tres dólares.
And, as if it were a prediction of Nostradamus himself, it was. In the first year alone, after the appearance of Barbie (as an almost exact replica of her German predecessor) at the New York Toy Fair, the company of which Ruth Handler was co-founder - Mattel - sold more than three hundred thousand units of the toy. As a curiosity we can say that the first Barbie doll cost only three dollars.
Con el paso de los años surgieron mucho más de cien modelos de muñecas Barbies, y miles de otros productos registrados bajo esa marca. Y, a pesar de que justo ahora nos encontramos en pleno siglo XXI, el regalo de Ruth para todas las niñas sigue siendo grandemente apreciado, y continúa resaltando el lema cliché (pero no menos cierto, o agradable) que todos sabemos: Tú puedes ser lo que quieras ser. Este siempre fue el propósito de la mujer ya fallecida hace veintiún años; el de inspirar a cada mujer a amarse a sí misma, a disfrutar de todas las cualidades que la hacen infinitamente bella y valiosa, a ser independiente y atrevida a la hora de alcanzar sus metas y luchar por sus sueños, y a sentirse motivada y conforme con lo que es y representa.
Over the years, well over a hundred models of Barbies dolls and thousands of other products registered under that brand name have emerged. And, despite the fact that we are now in the 21st century, Ruth's gift to all little girls is still greatly appreciated, and continues to highlight the cliché (but no less true, or pleasant) motto we all know: You can be anything you want to be. This was always the purpose of the woman who passed away twenty-one years ago; to inspire every woman to love herself, to enjoy all the qualities that make her infinitely beautiful and valuable, to be independent and daring in achieving her goals and striving for her dreams, and to feel motivated and content with who she is and stands for.
Quizás, en este fragmento del pasado, podamos entender el porqué de que esta nueva película de la muñeca más famosa del mundo haya llegado para quedarse.
