It is rarely possible to actually observe a lost place in the making. Most of the time, the buildings from which people withdraw are abandoned rather unnoticed. Factories close, laboratories or schools, barracks and churches close their doors without anyone noticing. But in Germany there was now the opportunity for the second time to watch a large corporation die and to experience the last days of its many decades of existence directly on site.
After the slow death of the last and largest German department store chain, Kaufhof, this time it was the retail giant Real that closed its doors with an announcement. The huge sales halls emptied slowly, then more and more quickly. The shelves were yawning empty of goods, the remains of the inventory went on sale from crates and boxes, but mostly still at high prices.
The pictures, taken at the end of an entire era, tell of the quiet death of a company that, over many years, always did the wrong thing at the wrong time, but with an unmistakable feeling for the right moment.
