Life is Seldom Rational and Logical...

in Silver Bloggerslast month

As I was working on an editing job earlier this evening - and likely not paying quite as much attention as I should be - I kept thinking about sayings like "even the best laid plans.. " and various other quotes relating to planning and uncertainty.

It occurred to me that so many of these supposedly "wise" words are predicated on the idea that life is fairly reliable and stable. And predictable.

Maybe I'm inhabiting a whole different universe, but when did pretty much anything in life become predictable?

When I think about it, many of my downfalls and failures have been precisely because life is UNpredictable when I was hoping it wouldn't be... and something unexpected happened and something that was otherwise going well crashed and burned as a result.

I probably have a higher "success rate" with things not going as expected, as opposed to panning out the way I'd hoped!

Reflecting on this really made me appreciate the truism that "control is just an illusion." What do we really hope we can control? Very little, I fear.

We make all these plans, and set a bunch of goals, and then we end up all surprised and butthurt because some unexpected variable derails our perfect plan.

So many different ways, too...

People talk about crypto being the future of money... but it strikes me the only thing about crypto we know with certainty is that it will gyrate wildly. Not much of a recommendation!

I suppose that "wanting control" is one of the fundamental human drives or desires. We just don't get to have control, 99% of the time.

Today, I was hoping to mow our lawn. Didn't seem like a big deal... but it turned out that our fancy - and relatively new - rechargeable electric mower had stopped working. Not even control over getting the lawn done!

Thanks for stopping by and have a great weekend!

This is the best lawnmower I ever bought …. Has lasted close to 30 years.

Great exercise too.

I get 20,000 steps mowing the lawn and earn $2 - $3 from Actifit with every mow.

Ah yes, I grew up mowing with one of those as a kid... and would mow people's lawns for pocket money. If we had a smaller place, I'd probably use one... but a rough guess is that a 14-inch mower like that would get me in about 40,000-50,000 steps to do our lawn, and I sadly don't have that much time on my hands.
