Dining at Dai Ga Jay

It had been years we got to catch up with one of our dear church members. Ever since they got married and busy with life as educators, and then got pregnant, plus our own busyness in life, our time couldn't synchronise. However, one day, our time somehow synchronised and we able to meet up for a short pleasant dinner at a mall nearby.

Dinner at Dai Ga Jay

Dai Ga Jay is in Kantonese language.
Dai= big
Ga Jay= sister

So basically this shop's name is Big Sister if directly translated to English.

This shop is located at a mall called Setapak Central.
📍Central Mall, S28, 29 & 28EA, 2nd floor, Setapak, 67, Jln Taman Ibu Kota, Taman Ibukota, 53300 Kuala Lumpur, Federal Territory of Kuala Lumpur

We let the young couple chose the place, giving priority to their son so that he got to eat the food he liked. Apparently, for whatever reason, according to the mother, the son really loved this place and the noodle here. He is a small eater, but when he came to Dai Ga Jay, he could finish the whole baby bowl. Dai Ga Jay is famous for its 'pan mee'.

Ambience

Indeed, this restaurant was cosy, with nice and clean environment. The waiter and waitress were helpful too. I was a bit sad for them for not having a lot of crowd. Hope the business will get better each day.

Food we ordered

It has a simple menu, just a piece of cardboard, I loved it this way so that it made it easier for us to choose.

Dry Pan Mee

'Panmee' or we called it 'ban mian' in Chinese is a popular Hakka heritage where the dough is flour-based and 100% handmade. It had chewy nice-to-bite texture and had that nice flour taste too.

My friend and I ordered dry pan mee without the soy sauce. Indeed, it was very delicious. It had huge amount of nicely marinated minced pork, sprinkled with spring onions and some roasted anchovies. It also had some green vegetables. And a bowl of appetising anchovies soup with fish balls.

My friend's husband ordered dry pan mee also but he ordered the one with soy sauce. He said yummy as usual. They came here every Friday, haha.

Buttermilk Chicken Rice

My eldest son couldn't resist anything with buttermilk so the moment he saw this in the menu, he straight away ordered.

He didn't regret, saying that it was so delicious. The chicken was crispy on the outside and soft in the inside, the buttermilk was a balance between butter and milk and a tinge of turmeric powder. It also had an added omelette, and for combo set, you could add a side which my son chose Japanese Tofu. Just a nice add on for his rice dish. Yums!

Dumpling soup

My husband was not hungry so he ordered dumpling soup for himself and also letting us try too. It was huge dumpling and the filling of minced pork with some scallion and onions were just nicely done! The soup which came with it was super delicious too!

We had so much good time together. It was supposed to be short dinner but it ended after two hours because after the dinner, we went to arcade to play with the children. That was what parents would do sometimes, eventhough we were dead tired and wanted to go home and rest, but the kids wanted to stroll around and we ended up just following them.❤️

Sort:

Delicious looking food, cozy location and it's great to order off a simple menu. It really gives you the opportunity to try everything on the menu after a few visits. Large menus often take me awhile to choose from especially if it's a first visit :)

Hmm.... the oldies vibe is coming back. Using those metal plates, double coated (?) bowls (should be, other wise the sui gao soup will be very hot) is giving those Chinese kampung / small town feel where these were sold at wet markets.

The pan mee looks small though 🤔

Anyways, it is always good to meet up old friends

On by the way, Moo from Thailand is back in KL for a visit. Not sure if you know about it.
