I don't know! But I will try to approach the subject in the way I tried to understand it.
First of all I need to say that James Cameron is one of those people who becomes a "legend" within certain areas and specific requirements and that in his case so far he has 3 films in the TOP 4 of the highest grossing worldwide. I don't want to go into other details, it's just these numbers that are even surreal to think about.
I'm not a cinephile and much less a connoisseur of the seventh art, I'm more of an appreciator of good times. But it has a story. A few years ago, I began to follow the release of films more by curiosities and how they became box office successes or not. And that's why the post and the subject wraps around this main aspect.
When Avengers had taken over the top ranking years ago I even made a post talking about exactly that. It was a clear phenomenon, success, but it couldn't be compared with the 2009 Avatar. Being an original film with no sequels and at that time one of the main film markets in the world (China) was very small compared to today. The revenue that Marvel earned comes a lot from there... But, returning to the focus of now, I swear I tried to understand the success of Avatar 2, but I couldn't.
The first movie we don't even need to talk about. The story, the technology involved, the cost of production and especially the 3D ERA that revolutionized movies at the time. A lot of the success I thought came from that. I remember how much people talked about it back then.
Now amaze one thing. I hadn't watched Avatar until months ago! (Yes, I have a certain delay to see certain movies, even though I know they are amazing). I decided to see it two weeks before the release of the second film, so I could see this one in the cinema. Since my best friend talked and talked about it a lot. When I watched the movie, I immediately fell in love with the story within the first 15 minutes of the movie, even without the magic of 3D. I thought it was incredible and I had no idea beyond the "blue cats" what the story of the film was like. It was amazing, cool, but after I finished watching the movie I was thinking... "Good story, but in the end it kind of became a little more of the same" and I imagined that the technology at the time, the novelty 3D must have given the special taste is much greater. OK
When the second one came out and I went to watch it, I already knew the news that the film needed to earn a lot in order to have the sequels because of its high production cost. And it made me wonder if this Avatar would have the same success as the first one. So much for the time that passed for the second film that many people would be too anxious waiting to see.
When I attended, the rooms were half empty, this in the first few days. (I remember how hard it was to get a ticket to the Avengers in the first week or other movies). But OK. So I watched the movie and in the end I had the same conclusion as the first one. It's a great movie, with a rich history, but in the end it's kind of "more of the same". (in the sense that the plot and situations that occur in the story are quite common in several movie stories, the charm is because it is the world of pandora and everything else), in addition to seeming that it was a retelling of the first movie, with all that history of adaptation in new places. But the first movie was fresh in my mind, recently seen for the first time and that could make my judgment wrong.
The film did not make the long-awaited box office gain in its debut or first week as expected for that time in many movie theaters around the world. But it became constant, and it gained as the weeks went by, holding steady. It even reached 2 billion faster than the first film (But let's remember the history of the amount of cinemas from that time to now). But even so, it went up and is about to enter the world TOP3, which will probably happen. Incredible!
And it's exactly this persistence and good numbers over the weeks and where it got that made me wonder what makes people want to see Avatar so much and be so successful? Where's the secret to it? The first film is more than justified. But the second maybe I went with so many expectations and they weren't met, but for the vast majority it was already more than enough to remember and be able to see the continuity of the Avatar story (which has a lot of talk, and discoveries, that could become a series) following in the world of Pandora.
I left the cinema thinking that if film 3 was to come out, there was a great possibility that the same story would repeat itself. They in other places, new "clans" and having to learn to live... As it was in 1, 2 and it will be like this in 3 according to what was said by the directors... If this continues to be successful like this, this way... .I really can't understand. And detail, it is not a bad, negative review. I really liked Avatar, I just can't find the success it deserves in the second movie.

Eu não sei! Mas tentarei abordar o assunto na maneira como eu tentei entender.
Antes de mais nada eu preciso dizer que James Cameron é uma daquelas pessoas que se torna "lenda" dentro de algumas determinadas áreas e quesitos em específicos e que no caso dele até o momento tem 3 filmes no TOP 4 de maior bilheteria mundial. Não quero entrar em outros detalhes, é apenas esses números que é algo até surreal de pensar.
Eu não sou um cinéfilo e muito menos entendedor da sétima arte, sou mais um apreciador de bons momentos. Mas tem um história. Alguns anos comecei acompanhar mais por curiosidades os lançamentos de filmes e como eles se tornavam sucesso de bilheteria ou não. E é por isso que o post e o assunto se envolve nesse aspecto principal.
Quando Vingadores havia assumido o topo do ranking anos atrás eu até fiz um post falando exatamente sobre isso. Foi um fenômeno claro, sucesso, mas não dava para comparar com o Avatar de 2009. Por ser um filme original sem sequências e que naquela época um dos principais mercados de cinema no mundo (China) era muito pequeno comparado hoje em dia. As receitas que Marvel ganhou vem muito de lá... Mas, voltando ao foco do agora, eu juro que tentei entender o sucesso do Avatar 2, mas não consegui.
O primeiro filme nem precisamos falar. A história, a tecnologia envolvida o custo de produção e principalmente a ERA 3D que fez revolucionar os filmes na época. Muito do sucesso eu imaginava que vinha disso. Eu lembro o quanto as pessoas comentavam a respeito disso naquele tempo.
Agora pasmem uma coisa. Eu não havia assistido Avatar até meses atrás! (Sim, eu tenho uma certa demora para ver determinados filmes, mesmo sabendo que são incríveis). Resolvi ver duas semanas antes do lançamento do segundo filme, para poder ver esse no cinema. Já que minha melhor amiga falava e falava muito a respeito. Quando eu assisti o filme, logo me encantei com a história nos primeiros 15 minutos do filme, mesmo sem a magia do 3D. Achei incrível e eu nem imaginava além dos "gatos azuis" como era a história do filme. Foi incrível, legal, mas após terminar de ver o filme eu fiquei pensando... "Boa história, mas no fim meio que se tornou um pouco mais do mesmo" e imaginei que a tecnologia na época, a novidade o 3D deveria ter dado o gosto especial e muito maior. Ok
Quando saiu o segundo e fui assistir, eu já sabia das notícias que o filme precisava faturar e muito para poder ter as sequências por causa do seu alto custo de produção. E isso me fez pensar se esse Avatar teria o mesmo sucesso que o primeiro. Muito pelo tempo que passou para o segundo filme e que muitas pessoas estariam ansiosas demais esperando para ver.
Quando assisti, as salas estavam meio vazias, isso logo nos primeiros dias. (Eu lembro como foi um sufoco conseguir ingresso para o Vingadores na primeira semana ou outros filmes). Mas ok. Então assisti o filme e no final eu tive a mesma conclusão do primeiro. É uma baita filme, com rica história, mas que no fim é meio que "mais do mesmo". (no sentido que o enredo e situações que ocorrem na história, é bem comum em várias histórias de filme, o charme fica por ser o mundo de pandora e tudo mais), além de parecer que era uma releitura do primeiro filme, com toda aquela história de adaptação em novos lugares. Porém o primeiro filme estava fresco em minha mente, recentemente visto pela primeira vez e isso poderia tornar meu julgamento errado.
O filme não fez o tão esperado ganho de bilheterias na estreia ou primeira semana visto o que se esperava para essa época de muitas salas de cinemas no mundo. Mas se tornou constante, e foi ganhando ao longo que as semanas foram se passando, se mantendo firme. Até atingiu 2 bilhões mais rápido que o primeiro filme (Mas vamos lembrar da história de quantidade de salas de cinema daquela época para agora). Só que mesmo assim, foi subindo e está para entrar no TOP3 mundial, o que provavelmente irá acontecer. Incrível!
E é exatamente essa persistência e bons números ao longo das semanas e onde chegou que me fez pensar o que leva as pessoas quererem ver tanto Avatar e ser tão sucesso? Onde está o segredo disso? O primeiro filme é mais que justificado. Mas o segundo talvez eu tenha ido com tantas expectativas e não foram atingidas, mas que para a grande maioria já era mais o que suficiente relembrar e poder ver a continuidade da história de Avatar (que tem muita fala, e descobrimentos, que poderiam virar uma série) seguindo no mundo da Pandora.
Saí do cinema pensando que se o filme 3 fosse sair, existia a grande possibilidade da mesma história se repetir. Eles em outros locais, novos "clãs" e tendo de aprender a viver... Como foi no 1, no 2 e será assim no 3 pelo que foi falado dos diretores... Se isso continuar fazendo sucesso assim, dessa maneira... Eu realmente não consigo entender. E detalhe, não é uma crítica ruim, negativa. Eu realmente gostei de Avatar, só não consigo encontrar o devido sucesso no segundo filme.
Esse é um filme de transição (muito mais contemplativo do que narrativo). Não tem começo e nem final. No entanto, nas entrelinhas estão muito contextos que ainda não serão discutidos nos próximos filmes.
A "sorte" do James Cameron, é que o público ainda (mesmo depois de tanto tempo) comprou a ideia do filme, haha!
Literalmente só assim para eu conseguir aceitar esse entendimento de um filme quase top 3 mundial 😆
