In order to combat excessive crime, the administration of the American city of San Francisco wants to give police the go-ahead to employ killer robots as a last option.
This resolution, which allows for the employment of some robots capable of killing by law enforcement in the case of a terrorist attack or mass murder, was approved by the San Francisco municipal council, according to AFP, taken by Agerpres. In the metropolis, this kind of attack happens frequently.
The last choice must be made by December 6. The measure's opponents worry that police brutality would increase. Using robots in potentially violent circumstances is a last choice, according to William Scott, chief of police for San Francisco.
We live in a time, he said, when mass violence is occurring more frequently. Should this type of catastrophe occur in the city, this choice will save lives, he added.
Two senior officials would issue the command to use the robots. Numerous robots are available to San Francisco police for bomb alarms, hazardous materials or other emergencies when officers need to retain their distance before securing places, according to the department.
According to a police statement, if approved, the decision would empower robots to either deploy explosive charges that might neutralize or disorient a hostile, armed or dangerous person who threatens to kill life.
The police representatives promised that robots equipped in this fashion will only be deployed to rescue innocent lives. Paul Scharre, vice president of the Center for a New American Security, a Washington-based think tank, called the practice a poor policy and the exact reverse of how police should be employing robots.
He continued, pointing out that there are numerous ways for law enforcement to stop an attacker without using lethal force. The advantage of robots is to create more distance between law enforcement and a threat, specifically so that they do not have to resort to lethal force. They could be equipped with anything, including the use of tear gas, tasers, and flash grenades.
