Personally I would say that the tiki-taka football was also gaining populaity in the 90's. One of the most notable in my opinion is (or was) Manchester United. They did tiki-taka before it was a thing.

One slightly more attacking midfielder, 2 attacking "wings" and the power house in the middle of the park. That usually allowed for quickly going from defense to attack, or the other way around.
