Some People Just Like to Watch the World Burn (or why we can't have nice things)

in Picture A Daylast month (edited)

I don't shy away from controversy and have in my lifetime said my fair share of controversial things. This might also come across as controversial, but you'll forgive my honesty, if I openly express dislike for the statues of the laughing men that adorn a plaza in this fine city. Truth be told, that's neither here nor there because every time I go by there, I see people taking photographs, usually mimicking the poses of these laughing men. HA! HA! HA! So, people seem to love them, as puzzling as it may seem to me.

But this is not a post about my likes or dislikes, or the tourists' likes and dislikes for that matter. All of that is just the nice rich tapestry and background to this story. You see, I may not like those statues, but I accept their existence as part of the community, and though I roll my eyes whenever I see them, I enjoy the silly element they have brought to town. The joy. Thus, like a proper law-abiding citizen, I leave them very well alone.

This story takes another convoluted turn that unsurprisingly for Canada involves hockey. The NHL season is coming to an end and the local team known as the Canucks is in the playoffs. So, as you can imagine from a city that has rioted a few times when it was knocked off the playoffs, the event is a big deal this side of Canuckland.

Hockey fever has reached such a pitch that some mysterious strangers decided to make large Canucks jerseys for the laughing men. Some of the statues were actually wearing them, and I should've taken a picture from a different angle, but I just couldn't bring myself to spend more time there than I had to. I also wondered about the legality of doing this to the beloved statues, but generally it seemed people liked the jerseys. I found it humorous that someone went to the trouble of dressing them up. The act created a feeling of community in the city, and for that, we should applaud.

Here's where things turn dark, or rather light, because some sourpuss set fire to the jerseys.

Like really, dude? We know it was a dude. I just don't think a female would do something like this. To what end? Then again, a male and female did put those jerseys on those laughing men to begin with. So, we can't be sure of anything except that this is no laughing matter.

Go Canucks Go!

What original sculptures! And with that building in the background I love it, colour and joy all around!😍

It's a lot of grinning, that's for sure 😁😁😁

No doubt about it!🤣

it was all ok, until some random jerk dude decided to set them on fire. I guess we all have a fair share of stupid governments, putting rather silly monument or sculpture, but as long as they are there, I guess it is ok.
but setting up fire on them, just because of the Hockey Jersey, is just beyond stupid.

Things like that I think is common, don't ask what stupid things happened to the statue build by the government here, in some places the story was just awful.
we all should spread !LUV instead isn't it?
