Krywań - a lofty (2,495 m above sea level) peak in the southwestern part of the High Tatras on the Slovak side, with a characteristic, curved peak, from which it takes its name (the pronunciation "Krzywań" is still found among older highlanders).
It is made of crystalline rocks, mainly granites. It is located on a side ridge, at the end of a long, approximately 10 km long ridge leading from the main Tatra ridge in Cubryn.
On August 16, 1841, Slovak national revival activists Ľudovít Štúr and Michal Miloslav Hodža entered Kriváň. From this year on, patriotic national výlets are organized at its peak, in which first supporters of independence took part, called štúrs after Štúr, then patriots and creators of Slovak culture. Currently, "national ascents" are organized on the weekend around August 16 each year, when 500 people climb the peak at a time.
Kriváň has been the national mountain of Slovaks since 1935. The peak was also included in the national anthem of Slovakia, in the coat of arms of the Slovak Socialist Republic ("eternal fire" with a mountain in the background), and since January 1, 2009, it has been featured on Slovak coins with denominations of 1, 2 and 5 eurocents. The peak often appears in the folk culture of Liptov and Podhale. In 1967, in a Slovak survey, it was considered the most beautiful peak of the Tatra Mountains.
Krywań – wyniosły (2495m n.p.m.) szczyt w południowo-zachodniej części Tatr Wysokich po stronie słowackiej, o charakterystycznym, zakrzywionym wierzchołku, od którego wziął nazwę (nadal spotykana jest wśród starszych górali wymowa „Krzywań”.
Zbudowany jest ze skał krystalicznych, głównie z granitów. Położony jest w grani bocznej, na zakończeniu długiej, mającej około 10 km grani odchodzącej od głównej grani tatrzańskiej w Cubrynie.
16 sierpnia 1841 na Krywań weszli słowaccy działacze odrodzenia narodowego Ľudovít Štúr i Michal Miloslav Hodža. Od tego roku na jego szczyt urządza się patriotyczne národné výlety, w których najpierw brali udział zwolennicy niepodległości, od nazwiska Štúra nazywani štúrowcami, potem patrioci i twórcy słowackiej kultury.
