Battle Mage Challenge: Going the Distance. Strategy, My Battle and Alternative Lineups

in Splinterlands25 days ago

This weeks Battle Mage Challenge is about the Going the Distance rule.

Splinterlands tells us the following about the Going the Distance rule:

Only units with ranged attacks may be used.

Consider including units with the Close Range and Return Fire abilities in your lineup.

Going the Distance is pretty weird since ranged units are not designed to be put in the frontline. In this rule, we have no choice, and have to rely on either dual attackers or units with Close Range to take the first position. If we dont use those, then that slot is wasted, and we better place our least valuable unit there to begin with.

Desirable Abilities

( Close Range Return Fire Headwinds Repair )

Close Range is very useful in this rule, so that we can put a unit in front that can still attack. Return Fire is obviously good since all units in these matches must have ranged attacks. Headwids will reduce incoming damage, making our team that much more durable. Finally, since armor will always be very effective in these matches, ranged units with Repair are great includes.

Advantaged Summoners

These summoners are my top choices in this ruleset. There are a few more that affect ranged attacks, but in general I don't find them as useful as these five.

Battle progress and Result

Going the Distance matches tend to be somewhat simple matches, and this is true here aswell. I have thee speed advantage on all my units, and they all attack the Wave Brood and take Return Fire damage back. In the end, my Igor also applies a Stun to it. Then my Xenith Archer tanks the enemy hits. Due to Quix's -1 ranged, my opponent's units do not deal enough damage to kill it in the first round. At the beginning of round 2 the game state is like this:

In round 2, I bring down the Wave Brood, and start damaging the Merdhampir. My Xenith Archer falls, leaving Naga Assasin to do the tanking. Usually it is able to dodge a hit or two, damaging back with Backfire, but that does not happen in this round.

In round 3, I kill the Merdhampir, and now Igor is the only one left on my opponent's team do to any damage. He kills the Naga Assassin, and then we go into round 4:

Since I still have the speed advantage, and no chance to miss, the game is sealed in here. My units quickly kill the Xenith Archer, and Igor is left helpless in front to suffer the hits in the next round. Quick and simple game, which worked out well for me because of Quix's -1 ranged ability.
