Punches, kicks and melee weapons – Double Dragon Review

in Hive Gaminglast month (edited)
In 1987 when Amusement Arcades were becoming hugely successful, thanks to games of diverse genres, an interesting new action title was released that defined the path that many ensuing games will follow, I’m talking about Double Dragon.

The first thing to point out of this classic is that it has a better elaborated plot than other titles of the time. It all starts in the future, with an earth in ruins due to a nuclear war. Only a few are left alive, and a new criminal organization has banded together to create chaos in the streets. That’s just when a pair of martial artists’ twins appear to stop the madness, the villains then kidnap the girlfriend of one of the heroes and now the mission is to rescue her.

The game has a very simple dynamic, with the option of having a player companion besides us; we can control one of the twins and advance through different sceneries eradicating dozens of enemies with our attacks. In the inferior part of the screen we can see our lives and our remaining energy, like this, we can be cautious or take more hero-like risky decisions, if necessary.

The repertory of movements at our disposal to end these criminals goes from punches, to kicks, elbowing and even grabbing them by the hair, to hit them with the knee and throw them over our shoulder. Besides, occasionally we can pick up weapons like knives, chains, pipes, dynamite or barrels to use them to take away the enemies’ energy or defeat them with one hit; it depends on the circumstances of the combat.

The enemies have different patterns, but at the end they always come to us. A tactic I find very effective to eliminate them is to wait for them until they walk in a straight line and hit them before they’re too close, we only need to understand the distance and speed of our attacks, the gameplay experience is very gratifying, each hit that meets its mark, each enemy defeated and each stage completed, is always thanks to your hard work and patience.

When it comes to these two departments, visuals and sounds, we can say this game has graphics, voices and effects that were quite good for its time; the music specially is great and electrifying enough to pump your adrenaline to the clouds.

Something curious about this game is that it had a NES release in which the plot was tweaked a little bit, in this version the post apocalyptic war that destroyed the earth is not mentioned and there’s no option for two players to join at the same time. Another interesting detail is that this version has new exclusive stages that were made probably due to the inferior technology of the console, but the bright side is that these fit the game’s concept perfectly.

In conclusion, whichever version it is, this will always be an eternal classic that everyone should experience. If you’ve ever complained about the difficulty level of modern games, prepare yourself to enjoy a challenging and fun adventure like no other.

Anyway, that’s all people, now I would like to know: what do you guys think? 😎

THANK YOU FOR READING!

I don't know why I like 2D fighting video games from that time, it must be because of the movement of the characters.

Great game, good post my friend!

I think it is because these type of games have something special.
