Surfing is a sport that, for a long time, was dominated by men. The high probability of finding female surfing films or documentaries was very low for a long time.
But with the scenario changing and women gradually occupying their place in this sport, it is already possible to find from fictional films with very light and fun narratives to documentaries about the real life of female surfers who had to use a lot of overcoming and courage to continue chasing their dreams. Here are some of my recommendations:
🏄♀ 7 Girls, 2001
This is probably one of the first documentaries produced specifically for women's surfing. What do you mean, only in 2001? That's right! If you want to know what life is like for 7 female surfers for a year, traveling the world from one spot to another, this is your chance! None other than renowned names in female surfing such as Layne Beachley (7 times world champion), Serena Brooke, Heather Clark, Megan Abubo, Rochelle Ballard, Keala Kennelly, and Sofia Mulanovich, the documentary shows these women ripping waves, catching tubes, and walls in settings like Fiji, Indonesia, Hawaii, Tahiti and more!
Although the documentary is only available in English, don't worry, there are more images than speeches and narratives. It speaks for itself! I promise you will want to take advantage of this one.

🏄♀ Blue Crush, 2002
This is one of the greatest classics of female surf movies. Like an afternoon session movie, you know? Who doesn't like it? The film is based on Susan Orlean's article Life's Swell for Outside magazine, chronicling the lives of surfer girls in Maui, Hawaii. In the movie, Anne Marie, a young surfer who shares a small apartment on the beach with three friends, including her rebellious younger sister, has been preparing for a championship that could change her life.
However, she becomes involved in a romance, leading to fights between her friends, making her question if this is what she wants. Here you will find several clichés related to rivalry and respect between men and women in surfing and friendship and support between women in surfing, even in a championship. Furthermore, get ready to see Hawaii's most amazing scenery and waves!

🏄♀ Soul Surfer, 2009
It's impossible to talk about women's surf movies, not to mention Bethany Hamilton (I'm suspicious because I'm a HUGE fan). Born in Hawaii, daughter of surfers and sister of surfers, this film, based on real events, tells the story of Bethany Hamilton (record that name!), a teenager who, since catching her first wave, knew she wanted to be a professional surfer. But at age 13, surfing with friends, she lost one of her arms in a shark attack. Despite the odds and no one thinking this was possible, filled with unshakable faith, Bethany was back at sea three weeks after the accident.
If you want a movie to inspire you with an incredible story full of emotion, this is it. He is unmissable! Fun fact: the film was the first in Hollywood to tell the true story of a female surfer.

🏄♀ The Women and The Waves, 2009
This is a very classic documentary that shows the real experience of surfing in the lives of 10 women aged between 17 and 64. With that alone, you can expect a lot of diversity and feeling at once.
Showing the lives of women surfers who, over the decades, chose to paddle hard in the direction of this sport that for a long time was dominated by the male universe and found a place of their own, this documentary was made both for women who surf or not, athletes, amateurs or professionals, who want to get to know and get an idea of what this universe of surfing like a girl is like. Seriously, it's simultaneously shocking and inspiring, and full of truth!

Another little afternoon session-style movie because it can't be missed, right? It is not a continuation of the previous film, and here we find a slightly different story, but with the same essence.
In this film, Dana is a young Californian surfer who, tired of her father's pressure, decides to go alone to South Africa, her mother's (deceased) birthplace, in search of the perfect waves. With the help of friends passionate about surfing, she embarks on an adventure along the South African coast in search of the waves that her mother once surfed and fulfills a dream that she could not: face the waves of Jeffrey's Bay. Another movie with drama, adventure, romance, and emotion to have a little fun!

🏄♀ Stephanie in the Water, 2014
What does it mean to be the best? Stephanie Gilmore is currently the best female surfer in the world, as she holds the most world titles, 8 to be precise. The Australian won her first WORLD championship at 17; by 22, she already had 4 world titles.
With a talent that seemed to be untouchable, that's when she suffered a series of violent events that terribly threatened her winning streak. This documentary, which by the way, is very intimate, shows the competitive side of the athlete - I hate to lose, she says - and narrates how her strong feeling for surfing and her free spirit made her return to the podiums in addition to showing what the costs of to be 5 times world champion (that's because today there are already eight titles!). Tip: watch the credits!

🏄♀ Sea Sun Flower, 2015
This is the 1st Brazilian film dedicated exclusively to female surfing! It is a short film of approximately 20 minutes, which has a collection of images packed with an exciting soundtrack and intends to exalt female surfing through the eyes of some of the most beautiful and talented Brazilian surfers: Alana Pacelli, Claudinha Gonçalves, Bárbara Mller, Chantalla Furlanetto and Marina Werneck (what a team ladies and gentlemen!).
Celebrating the relationship between women and the sea, check out these great surf sessions mixed with narratives from each athlete on the most paradisiacal beaches in Costa Rica.

🏄♀ The Women and The Waves 2, 2016
In yet another edition of this incredible documentary, this unique approach between women and surfing and life is once again celebrated, seeking to faithfully show the state of surfing today seen from a female perspective.
A little deeper, this second edition continues to explore surf culture and its relationship to the lives of six different female surfers, both in and out of the water. Here, they tried to show and emphasize this notion that surfing is much more than just a sport, but a lifestyle (isn't it?!) and serves as an instrument to make connections between people and the nature around us. I'm sure you will be taken by a wonderful feeling of gratitude when watching this documentary!

🏄♀ Maya Gabeira: Return to Nazaré, 2016
If you don't know or have never heard of it, Maya Gabeira is a Brazilian giant wave surfer (no small thing!). She was among the first women to pursue a professional big wave career; today, she is one of the world's highest-paid big wave surfers.
In this short documentary, the worst accident the athlete has ever suffered is reported in October 2013 in the giant waves of Nazaré, Portugal, and how she struggled to overcome physical and mental obstacles and finally return to big wave surfing again. It's amazing to see her determination, seeing that 2 years after the incident, she went back to surfing in the same place, overcoming all her fears, traumas, and insecurities. And you know what else? She came back more triumphant than ever! Want to know how? Just watching!

🏄♀ Rip Tide, 2017
Guys, this movie is pretty cute, I swear! Even though it is a bit "teenager", it is quite handsome and comes with some fascinating lessons. It definitely wasn't meant to be a girly surf movie, but... it wouldn't be on this list if it didn't talk about that too! In this story, the young model Cora is the daughter of the head of the best modeling agency and has always worked hard to meet her mother's expectations.
When a video of her falling down a ladder goes viral, Cora goes to Australia to spend time with her Aunt Margot. Margot is also going through her difficulties, and they will have a learning experience. And that's where surfing comes in! The film shows situations where one learns from one's mistakes, the relationships between women in the same family, and how it is possible to remain positive and not demand so much in the face of psychological blockage. Heavy? I swear not! It's a very light film, full of motivational and reflective phrases and female surfing in the right measure.

🏄♀ Bethany Hamilton: Unstoppable, 2019
Did I say to remember that name? Bethany Hamilton has it all and more, now with a documentary! And it is simply surreal and beautiful. Continuing to show her story of chasing her dream of being a professional surfer after losing her left arm in a shark attack and showing many things that weren't really shared in the film Courage de Viver, this documentary comes to reveal the real Bethany.
Here she rewrites the rules of how to be a fearless athlete, trying to find the balance between marriage and motherhood and intensive and relentless training to be able to participate in the championships. You imagine? No? So here's her phrase: "I don't need easy. I just need possible". Here's the reason to end all her excuses, not just for surfing but for life.

Sendo o surf um esporte que por muito tempo foi dominado pelos homens, a grande probabilidade de encontrar filmes ou documentários de surf feminino foi, por muito tempo, bem baixa.
Porém com o cenário mudando e as mulheres ocupando aos poucos seu lugar nesse esporte, já é possível encontrar desde filmes fictícios com narrativas bem leves e divertidas, até documentários sobre a vida real de surfistas mulheres que tiveram que usar de muita superação e coragem pra continuar perseguindo seus sonhos.
Aqui vão as minhas recomendações:

Esse provavelmente é um dos primeiros documentários produzidos voltado especificamente para o surf feminino. Como assim, só em 2001? Isso mesmo! Se você quer saber como é a vida de 7 mulheres surfistas durante um ano, viajando o mundo de um pico para o outro, essa é a sua chance!
Nada mais nada menos que nomes renomados do surf feminino como Layne Beachley (7 vezes campeã mundial), Serena Brooke, Heather Clark, Megan Abubo, Rochelle Ballard, Keala Kenelly e Sofia Mulanovich, o documentário mostra essas mulheres rasgando ondas, pegando tubos e paredões em cenários como Fiji, Indonesia, Hawaii, Tahiti e mais! Apesar de o documentário estar disponível apenas em inglês, não se preocupe, há mais imagens do que falas e narrativas. Ele fala por si só! Prometo que você não vai querer perder essa.

Provavelmente esse é um dos maiores clássicos dos filmes de surf feminino. Tipo filme de sessão da tarde sabe? Quem não gosta? O filme é baseado no artigo Life's Swell (O Swell da Vida - tradução livre) de Susan Orlean para a revista Outside, que fala sobre a vida das garotas surfistas de Maui, Hawaii.
No filme, Anne Marie, uma jovem surfista que divide um pequeno apê na beira da praia com mais três amigas, incluindo sua rebelde irmã mais nova, vem se preparando para um campeonato que pode mudar sua vida. Porém ela se envolve em um romance, levando a brigas entre suas amigas e isso faz ela se questionar se é isso o que ela realmente quer. Impossível falar de filmes de surf feminino, sem falar de Bethany Hamilton (sou suspeita pra falar pois sou MUITO fã). Nascida no Hawaii, filha de surfistas e irmã de surfistas, esse filme, baseado em fatos reais, conta a história de Bethany Hamilton (grava esse nome!), uma adolescente que desde que pegou a primeira onda, sabia que queria ser surfista profissional. Porém aos 13 anos, surfando com os amigos, perdeu um de seus braços em um ataque de tubarão. Mesmo contra todas as probabilidades e ninguém achando que isso fosse possível, cheia de uma fé inabalável, Bethany estava de volta no mar três semanas após o acidente.
Se você quer um filme pra te inspirar com uma história verdadeiramente incrível e cheia de emoção, é esse aqui. Ele é imperdível! Curiosidade: o filme foi o primeiro em Hollywood a contar a história real de uma surfista.

Mais um filmezinho estilo Sessão da Tarde, porque não pode faltar, né? Não é uma continuação do filme anterior e aqui encontramos uma história um pouco diferente, mas com a mesma essência.
Nesse filme, Dana é uma jovem surfista californiana que, cansada das pressões do pai, decide ir sozinha pra África do Sul, terra natal de sua mãe (já falecida), em busca das ondas perfeitas. Com a ajuda de amigos fanáticos por surf, ela embarca numa aventura pelo litoral sul africano em busca das ondas que sua mãe um dia surfou e realizar um sonho que ela não foi capaz: enfrentar as ondas de Jeffrey's Bay. Mais um filme com drama, aventura, romance e emoção pra se divertir um pouquinho!

Este documentário, que por sinal é bem íntimo, mostra o lado competitivo da atleta - Odeio perder, diz ela - e narra como o seu sentimento forte pelo surf e seu espírito livre a fizeram retornar aos pódios, além de mostrar quais são os custos de ser 5 vezes campeã mundial (isso porque hoje já são oito títulos!). É um curta de aproximadamente 20 minutos, que conta com uma coletânea de imagens embaladas por uma trilha sonora excitante e tem a intenção de exaltar o surf feminino através do olhar de algumas das mais belas e talentosas surfistas brasileiras: Alana Pacelli, Claudinha Gonçalves, Bárbara Mller, Chantalla Furlanetto e Marina Werneck (que time senhoras e senhores!).

Em mais uma edição desse incrível documentário, novamente celebra-se essa aproximação mais que única entre as mulheres e o surf e a vida, procurando mostrar fielmente o estado do surf hoje visto de uma perspectiva feminina.
Um pouco mais aprofundado, essa segunda edição continua a explorar a cultura do surf e sua relação com a vida de seis diferentes mulheres surfistas, tanto dentro e fora d'água. Aqui, procuraram mostrar e enfatizar essa noção de que o surf é muito mais que apenas um esporte, e sim um estilo de vida (não é mesmo?!) e serve como um instrumento para se fazer conexões entre pessoas e a natureza a nossa volta. Tenho certeza que você vai ser tomada por um sentimento maravilhoso de gratidão ao assistir esse documentário!

Se você não sabe, ou nunca ouviu falar, Maya Gabeira é uma surfista brasileira de ondas gigantes (não é pouca coisa!). Foi uma das primeiras mulheres a perseguir uma carreira profissional em ondas grandes e hoje ela é uma das surfistas de ondas grandes mais bem pagas do mundo.
Nesse pequeno documentário, é relatado o pior acidente que a atleta já sofreu, em outubro de 2013 nas ondas gigantes de Nazaré, em Portugal, e como ela lutou pra superar os obstáculos físicos e mentais e enfim retornar ao surf de ondas gigantes novamente. É incrível ver sua determinação, ao ver que 2 anos depois do ocorrido, ela voltou a surfar no mesmo lugar, superando todos os seus medos, traumas e inseguranças. E sabe o que o mais? Ela voltou mais triunfante do que nunca! Quer saber como? Só assistindo!

🏄♀ Rip Tide (no BR: A Garota da Hora), 2017
Gente, esse filme é bem fofo, juro! Mesmo sendo um tanto "adolescente", ele é bem bonito e vem com algumas lições bem interessantes. Ele definitivamente não foi feito pra ser um filme de surf feminino, mas... ele não estaria nessa lista se não falasse sobre isso também!
Nessa história, a jovem modelo Cora é filha da chefe da melhor agência de modelo, e sempre trabalhou duro para atender as expectativas da mãe. Quando um vídeo dela caindo de uma escada se torna um viral, Cora vai passar um tempo na Austrália com sua tia Margot. Margot também está passando por suas próprias dificuldades, e juntas elas terão uma experiência de aprendizado. E é aí que o surf entra! (Será?). O filme mostra situações onde se aprende com os próprios erros, as relações entre mulheres numa mesma família, e como é possível se manter positiva e não se cobrar tanto diante de tanto bloqueio psicológico. Pesado? Juro que não! É um filme bem leve, cheio de frases motivacionais e reflexivas e surf feminino na medida certa.

Eu disse pra gravar esse nome lembra? Bethany Hamilton vem com tudo e um pouco mais, agora com um documentário! E eu tenho que dizer que ele tá simplesmente surreal de lindo. Continuando a mostrar sua história de perseguir seu sonho de ser surfista profissional após perder o braço esquerdo em um ataque de tubarão, e mostrando muitas coisas que não foram realmente compartilhadas no filme Coragem de Viver, esse documentário vem pra revelar a verdadeira Bethany.
Aqui ela reescreve as regras de como ser uma atleta sem medo, tentando encontrar o equilíbrio entre casamento e maternidade e treinos intensivos e incansáveis pra conseguir participar dos campeonatos. Você imagina? Não? Então fica aqui com essa frase dela: "I don't need easy, I just need possible" (Eu não preciso que seja fácil, eu só preciso que seja possível). Tá aqui o motivo pra acabar com todas as suas desculpas, não só pro surf, mas pra vida.
