Hola a todos los hivers!!!¿Saben cuándo les toca hacer algo que nunca pensaron que iban a hacer y después les encanta?. El pasado 2022 fui invitada a participar en una expo colectiva sobre arquitectura y arte religioso. En un principio me negué rotundamente. No me sentía segura de trabajar sobre un tema que no sé absolutamente nada.Después pensé que sería una nueva experiencia ¿Por qué no?
Hello to all the hivers! You know that situation when you get to do something you never thought you would ...and then you love it? Last 2022 I was invited to participate in an exhibition about religious art. At first I refused. I didn't feel like working on a subject that I know nothing about. Then I thought it would be a new experience, so why not?
Visité varias iglesias de mi ciudad: la Católica, la Metodista, la Protestante. Aunque todas tienen una estructura arquitectónica bastante ecléctica, eso sí lo sé, me llamó más la atención la influencia Art Decó de la Iglesia Católica frente al parque Martí, epicentro de la ciudad. A pesar de datar de 1952, fue declarada Catedral en el año ´96. Única de su tipo en la provincia de Ciego de Ávila. Entonces...aquí hay que explorar!
I visited several churches in my city: the Catholic, the Methodist and the Protestant. Although all of them have a rather eclectic architectural structure,so far that i know about, I was more struck by the Art Deco influence of the Catholic Church in front of Martí Park, the epicenter of the city. Although it dates back to 1952, it was declared a Cathedral in 1996, the only one of its kind in Ciego de Avila. So...that´s a nice place to explore!
Cámara en mano solicité los permisos pertinentes a la administración y estudié las horas del día que me permitirían trabajar mejor el arte del local. La primera foto fue a la enorme efigie de San Eugenio de la Palma, que le da nombre y protector de la ciudad. Apostado en la fachada, es asombroso pasar por el portal de la iglesia y encontrarse al imponente guardián con su espada en la mano. Eugenio en vida fue arzobispo de la ciudad de Toledo en España, está en el frente de la iglesia para proteger a los descendientes de la madre Patria, casi dos siglos después.
Camera in hand, I requested the pertinent permits from the administration and studied the hours of the day that would allow me to work better on the art of the place. The first photo was of the huge effigy of San Eugenio de la Palma, he is the cause of the places name and also, protector of the city. Stationed on the facade, it is incredible to pass through the church doorway and find the huge guardian with his sword in hand. He was in real life the archbishop of the city of Toledo in Spain, and now is in front of the church to protect all descendentes of the mother country, more than two centuries later.
Un rincón especial que no puede faltar en la iglesia cubana, es el hogar de la Virgen de la Caridad del Cobre, "Cacha", la madre de todos los cubanos, la Patrona de Cuba, la personificación cubana de la Virgen María. Un rincón muy concurrido y que siempre huele a flores por las promesas pagadas y los anhelos. La velas siempre encendidas. Allí estaba la virgen criolla cargando a su bebé y los marinos desesperados agradeciendo a sus salvadora, cual novela dramática, cuando uno sabe que va a haber un final feliz.
A special corner common in all Cuban churches, is the placement of la Caridad del Cobre Virgen, "Cacha", the mother of all Cubans, the Cuban personification of the Virgin Mary and our Patrón Saint. A very busy corner that always smells of flowers because of the promises paid and the yearnings. The candles always lit. There was the Creole virgin carrying her baby and the desperate sailors thanking their savior, like a dramatic novel, when you knows that there will be a happy ending.
Si antes el arte sacro, las esculturas y pinturas de motivos religiosos me parecían lejanos, ajenos y nunca entendí verdaderamente su valor didáctico, ahora a través de mi lente los sentí más reales que nunca. Nada más hay que ver los detalles en las heridas, las manos cayosas y venosas, las expresiones faciales. Con qué pasión deben haber sido creadas para poder transmitir desde la piedra y el yeso, sentimientos de compasión, de añoranza. Cuántas veces les pasé por el lado a estas esculturas y estos cuadros y no me detuve a ver lo que tenían que decir.
If before sacred art, sculptures and paintings with religious motifs seemed distant and alien to me, actually I never really understood their didactic value, now through my lens I felt them more real than ever. Just look at the details of the wounds, the drooping and veined hands, the facial expressions! How passionate must have been the artists that made those to be able to transmit from stone and plaster, feelings of compassion, of longing. How many times I passed by these sculptures and paintings and did not stop to see what they had to say.
Es por eso que los invito a todos a romper sus zonas de confort y hacer lo inesperado. A descubrir nuevos motivos que fotografiar. A inspirarse en la fuente infinita que es el arte. A reconectar con sus raíces. Espero que les gusten mis fotos. Gracias!

La virgen apareció por primera vez en el poblado del Cobre en Santiago de Cuba. Allí hay un santuario espectacular. Todo cubano de formación religiosa debe ir al menos una vez en la vida. Gracias por visitar mi post y por la opinión 😊
