Este Domingo concluyó Semana Santa. La semana estuvo llena de fieles desfilando por las calles con sus ramos de girasoles hacia las iglesias.
“¿Cuál es el problema de los cubanos y los girasoles?” Me preguntó un día un turista americano. “Los girasoles son la flor de la felicidad”. Le contesté una frase inocente. ¿La verdad? La verdad es que los girasoles son historias enteras, no una palabra ambigua. La felicidad son muchas cosas diferentes para cada cual.

This Sunday concluded Holy Week and was filled with the faithful walking the streets with their bouquets of sunflowers to the churches.
"What is the problem with Cubans and sunflowers?" an American tourist asked me once. "They are the flower of happiness." I answered him an innocent phrase. The truth? The truth is that sunflowers are whole stories, not an ambiguous word. Happiness is many different things for everyone.
Comencemos aclarando que desde 1916 el Papa Benedicto xv proclama a la santa patrona de Cuba, Nuestra Señora de la Caridad del Cobre o “Cachita” para sus hijos, como una de las advocaciones de la virgen María. Es así como la santa rescatada del mar por los náufragos, se convierte en la madre “a lo cubano” de nuestro señor.
La mayoría de los creyentes cubanos, profesan la religión católica, la heredada de los abuelos españoles. Pero creyente o no, el cubano siente una conexión profunda con su patrona y defensora de los humildes. ¿Y cuál es su flor preferida? ¡Los girasoles!
La flor del color del Sol como su manto. La flor longeva que se mueve en su lugar buscando al cielo. La flor que nació en centro-américa, criolla y enorme.
Let's begin by clarifying that since 1916 Pope Benedict XV proclaims the patron saint of Cuba, Our Lady of Caridad del Cobre, or "Cachita" for her children, as one of the invocations of the Virgin Mary. This is how the saint rescued on the sea by shipwrecked sailors, becomes the "Cuban" mother of our Lord.
Most Cuban believers profess the Catholic religion, the one inherited from their spaniards grandparents. But believer or not, Cubans feel a deep connection with our patron saint and defender of the humble. And what is her favorite flower? Sunflowers!
The flower of the color of the sun like its mantle. The long-lived flower that moves in its place looking for the sun, the sky. The flower that was born in Central America, Creole and huge.

Pero la sangre cubana también viene de África. Tenemos la versión sincrética yoruba, donde María, Caridad y Oshún se vuelven una. Oshún es un oricha mayor, la deidad de la feminidad, la alegría, el sexo, la fertilidad, la maternidad. Es una madre poderosa que con su sonrisa llena los ríos de amor y miel. Según la Regla de Ocha, una de las mejores ofrendas para OShún, son cinco girasoles. Representan con su color amarillo la fe, el amor, la unión. Entonces le ofrecemos los más grandes y vivos.
Cuban blood also comes from Africa. We have the syncretic Yoruba version, where María, Caridad and Oshún become one. Oshún is a “major oricha”, the deity of femininity, joy, sex, fertility, motherhood. A powerful mother who woth a smile, fills the rivers with love and honey. According to the Regla de Ocha, one of the best offerings for Ochún are five sunflowers. With their yellow color they represent faith, love and union. So she demands the bigger ones.
Por eso en Semana Santa, los domingos, los días que vamos a agradecer o a pedir a los santos, cantan los girasoles por las calles y en los altares escondidos en los hogares de Cuba, no importa en qué crea cada quién.
El girasol es sinónimo de buena suerte, salud, emprendimiento, resilencia, el reinicio de todo. Girasoles para recordarle a los santos que no nos hemos dado por vencidos buscando la felicidad.
That is why on Holy Week, Sundays, just any day we go to thank or to ask for help to the saints, the sunflowers sings on the streets and in the altars hidden in the homes of Cuba, no matter what each one believes in.
The sunflower is synonymous with good luck, health, entrepreneurship, resilience, the restarting of everything. Sunflowers to remind the saints that we have not given up looking for happiness.
