Kathmandu part 2 - The Big Festival! #Monomad

in Black And White2 months ago

Staying by the large Boudhanath stupa for a couple of weeks now it really feels like home :-) Yesterday afternoon large tents were erected all around it, so I knew something big was planned!

I have seen this old monk a lot here, he is a regular, not sure about his happy buddy though, many travel to take part of course.

Although this is a Tibetan festival its interesting to see how many Nepalis from the different cultures here that are Buddhist, it is clear to see during festivals like this one.

Light offerings are of course an important part of it all!

I'm not sure if this monk used his own mala for a mandala offering or if he blessed if for someone that way.

Buddha statues and food offerings are of course present everywhere.

When it is super crowded its only natural that some want to get a break from it all! :-)

These guys are the "heavy hitters", lay initiates that often spend all their life in retreat and different types of training. Some have families too, but if so their focus is on practicing in that setting 24/7.

Families, Buddhist texts and offerings are everywhere, better be careful where you tread!

I'm not sure, but the guy to the left looks like a Nepali that might have lay vows only, maybe someone very dedicated through the years that is invited to sit with the monks and lamas? Or perhaps a sponsor.

Get that right! :-)

The devotion so many display is hard to describe...

That's it for now!
