#MayInLeo - emergency services
Something incredible happened a few months ago, something that I would never believed could happen in England. Somebody died while waiting for the first aid in A&I (accidents and emergency) for too long. But then, when I researched more about it, it was a bit astounding. More than fourteen thousand people died last year because the waiting times for emergency services were too long. 14.000!
That is a big number. With each death, an entire world disappears, and that number is way too big. The whole medical service is overloaded, understaffed and not paid enough to attract new people. It seems that there is no solution to this, and this crisis will only get worse. I get it, the National Health Service, the NHS, was something revolutionary, free, and really worked after WWII, but this is not adequate today anymore.
You would think that the government would care and that they would want to pay these people decently, but you are sorely mistaken. Hence the recent strikes, as the people working in health, carers, and even nurses, sometimes need to use a food bank to reach the end of the month. I get it, mortgage, electricity and gas, food, all the bills are increasing quickly, and the wages cannot keep up with the inflation, but all these will engage into a death spiral, into a crisis that we have never seen before. Well, COVID and its consequences did not help either. If you read about the 1929 Depression, you can see the signs now, striking similar to its beginning. What will be next, we have no idea.
More and more people will suffer, physical and mental health, or both, and we need our emergency services to be able to engage successfully and sort us out if the need arises. But this is only some faraway dream. The apocalypse is near, this time, and we may not be fast enough to get out.
