Garden Update

in Proof of Brain10 months ago

It's been a while since I've done an update on my garden but a lot has changed in so here we go. I'll start with the backyard.

20230529_170822.jpg

We patiently waiting for all the flowers and plants to grow in and wondered what it was all going to look like.

20230529_170842~2.jpg

In the end there wasn't much change from before. After the daffodils and tulips disappeared, not a lot happened.

20230529_170833~2.jpg

There is one peony plant that came out fast and hot and then fizzled away right quick. From start to finish it came and went in less than a week.

20230530_164512~2.jpg

The flowers bloomed all pretty like for three days and then immediately wilted and died. I think it was the heat at the time and the lack of us watering it. I'll try to remember that novel idea for next year. "Note to self: remember to water the garden!!!"

We have a bleeding hearts plant back there as well which lasted a few days longer but not much.

20230529_170911~2.jpg

Other than that we have a few hostas back there and some allium but that's about it. Everything else is periwinkle, an invasive ground cover that takes over everything. There are also a lot of weeds, which isn't surprising. The backyard garden needs a lot of work to make it look nice but we haven't begun and don't know where to start or what we want to do yet. Making a garden look nice is harder than it seems, and its expensive. In general we like self propagating plants like hostas and peonies and such because you can cut them and plant the cuttings elsewhere without having to pay for new plants. "Damn yo, flowers are expensive!"

I planted some tomatoes at the side of our house.

20230523_172238.jpg

Five different varieties including two different types of cherry tomatoes, and three different slicer types, one of which is naturally yellow in color.

20230528_151551.jpg

The space doesn't get much sun at all, just a couple of hours each day in the afternoon, so the plants are somewhat stalky and sparse.

20230528_151601.jpg

But I've been watering them regularly so at least I learned from our first mistake in the backyard garden.

20230601_183333~2.jpg

They are starting to bear some fruit too, so that's a win in my opinion.

20230705_165133.jpg

I had low expectations, knowing that they wouldn't get enough sunlight, so any tomato growth is a win.

20230705_165139.jpg

"Ooo look! They're getting close to harvesting. It almost time for some salads."

20230705_165149.jpg

Here is a quick partial look at the front garden.

20230627_161957~2.jpg

There is a beautiful red Japanese Maple tree out front with some shrubs and hostas around it.

20230627_162131~2.jpg

Then there is this vine that I don't know the name of that has been pruned and groomed into this small tree out front.

20230627_162142~2.jpg

That is accompanied by various hostas and ither plants strewn about randomly and its all surrounded by Black Eyed Susan that isn't in bloom yet.

20230528_170028~2.jpg

It's a really nice base to start with but its all gotten a little untamed over the years so we plan on changing it up a little this fall so that it comes in nicer next year.

20230528_170110~2.jpg

One of our favorite features about the house is our front deck.

20230528_170052~2.jpg

It's set up high, level with the Japanese maple and almost in the canopy of the trees along the street.

20230528_151747~2.jpg

It's very private and when the tree are full of leaves, to the point that people walking on the road can barely see us sitting up there.

20230528_151827~2.jpg

Something kind of neat are the geraniums that the previous owner left for us.

20230528_151916~2.jpg

In Canada it isn't common to bring annual flowers indoors for the winter but the man who lived here before us had been growing the geraniums in pots and bringing them in each winter for over 15 years!

20230528_151905~2.jpg

We put them into the planter boxes on the deck and have been tending them for the season.

20230701_071529.jpg

We patiently waited for months for them to start budding, wondering what color they would turn out.

20230701_071627~2.jpg

My wife bought two white geraniums to replace two that had died, since white pretty much goes with any other color.

20230701_071553.jpg

Eventually we saw some red buds forming and got all excited that they were finally going to bloom. The red geraniums are two to three times larger than the new white ones that my wife bought.

20230722_083012~2.jpg

They took a really long time to flower but once they did they went absolutely insane producing 10+ flowers poms per plant.

20230718_181848~2.jpg

They are especially pretty looking in the evening when the low sun hits them. They almost seem to glow in the golden light.

20230718_181836~2.jpg

We have never tried to save flowers over the winter but we got instructions from the previous owner and are going to give it a shot. The plants are very large and really beautiful so we feel that it would be a waste and a shame to let these plants die and not keep the tradition going. Wish us luck!

Well thats it for now. Until next time, thanks for stopping by.

We have geraniums too. I can't believe they survive the winter but they do. Garden is looking good! We planted lots of lobelia this year at that flower nonstop for ages and they have been awesome!

Yeah geraniums tend to be pretty hardy. I think your winters are a lot milder than our Canadian ones. Your outdoors are probably the equivalent of inside our garages. 😆

Lol. You are most likely right! I will be taking a few things into the garage this year as last winter killed loads of stuff

Thats unfortunate that things died. As long as it wasn't the bamboo!
Good luck 👍

The bamboo's remaining have survived! They are thriving this summer. The new new golden one to replace the dead one is so a spindly little thing right enough

Good to hear that it's surviving and thriving. That's excellent news 😁

Good luck, it seems to have worked by getting them inside.
Nice update on the garden.
The tomatoes 🍅 going well even though they don’t get enough sun.
Have a nice new week 👋🏻😊

Yeah the tomatoes are doing okay. It's mainly that the plants aren't producing a lot of fruit. There are maybe 3 or 4 tomatoes on each plant and maybe two sparse strands of cherry tomatoes of each of them. There should be like 4-8 times that amount if they were getting the right sunlight. Oh well though. Make do with what you got I suppose

Yes, with more sun they would produce a lot more.
They will still be great to eat 😋

I'll have to savor them since there will be so few 😅

Yes, they become precious 😋 haha

Hello, Are you by any chance using the blurt blog platform? Because it seems strange, there is an account pretending to be you and I want to know what's going on. https://blurt.blog/@leaky-20

Oh Jesus for real?
No I'm not on Blurt - that is someone pretending to be me. That's so annoying. Thanks for letting me know. I'm not sure what can be done to stop it.

The account is already reported! It already has a spam and impersonation warning, the offender will no longer be able to do many things on the platform.

But as you say, it is very annoying that someone comes and steals your content. Best regards, be well

Okay that's good to hear. Thanks again 👍

Wow! That's impressive.

The flowers bloomed all pretty like for three days and then immediately wilted and died.

Yeah, you gotta water your garden, man!
With a garden like this, you could give up your day job, or have a seasonal job, you know.
I think you could put a sign at the gate:

"$10 a pop for that Instagrammable Shot in my garden."

...and rake all the money from your garden...

Gosh, those tomatoes though... Well, Done👏

Man, this was just what I needed to distract me from the grey, wet misery that I'm looking at.
#MyMondayBluesAreGone

Haha $10 a shot would be a nice way to earn some extra money and maybe pay for the water to keep the plants hydrated 😂

They took a really long time to flower but once they did they went absolutely insane

I can feel, how exciting it feels when you see them - the result of all the hard work.

It's a good feeling 😄

Worth the wait and flowers are delightful 😊
Yeah, you'd better be keeping those flowers during winter. They are beautiful 😍

Yeah I agree that they were worth the wait and we will definitely keep them through the winter

You had a beautiful garden with so many colorful flowers @leaky20
I'm waiting for another update when the tomatos are turning red.

Yeah they are starting to change color so it should be soon. 😁

Beautiful flowers 🤩

Thanks! 😀

Welcome 🙂

Aww
I guess you got what you expected
