A Vision for Change: Enforcing Policies for Sustainable Population Growth in Nigeria

in Hive Learners14 days ago

Here in Nigeria, there is nothing like regulating the number of children families can have. Although a census was carried out in the past years to determine the population of our country and probably come up with schemes that could help the economy, there was no official implementation of limitations for family size after the census. You could see a nuclear family with almost a dozen children, especially in low-income households, subjecting the children they intentionally brought into this world to unnecessary hardship.

In Lagos State, Nigeria, family planning services have been made free and available in all general hospitals and health centers in different locations across the state. Yet, some people find it hard to key into this program but still give birth to almost a dozen kids and later start begging for financial assistance. This isn't healthy, and I believe the Lagos state government saw the need to control childbirth and then gave free services. The many times I have visited the hospital for family planning, there are a good number of trained health care professionals who educate women on different kinds of birth control, including natural birth control.

I am a great advocate of family planning on the quest to reduce childbirth for quality living in my country, having seen how many children lack quality education due to resources, quality food, shelter, and general care. I have seen parents give birth to many children and later start giving out their children to both strangers and relatives to help train them. I have also seen mothers drop their children off at a motherless baby home just because of financial constraints.

There's a high need to implement drastic measures to limit family size in my country; unfortunately, there's no official policy regulation on this. Imagine visiting a mechanic shop to see children 7 years old learning mechanics when they should be in school, at least to gain a basic education first before acquiring such a skill. Imagine parents sending their many children to go and beg on the street. C'mon, we can do better for ourselves.

In the olden days, it was very common to see a single family with 8 to 12 children, but then, it baffles me that today's parents are still giving birth to such a large family size with the mentality that God will provide even in this harsh economy. Sometimes, one of the problems a country with a large population faces is the inability of available food to go around, and thus food becomes so scarce and inflation is awakened. A woman living in the house opposite my house gave birth to eight children. When she was pregnant with her last baby, I politely asked her, "Madam, I thought you were done giving birth." Hahaha, I couldn't resist the question, and my annoyance is that she is suffering a lot, a groundnut seller, with no tangible source of finance for her and the husband, and yet they can't embrace birth control, either natural or artificial, but rather hope that God will provide.

There's an urgent need for my country to regulate how many kids families can have. The government should step in and help control our population, pass a bill for every family to obey, or else face the consequences. If this is implemented, planning for the future economy will be possible, and we might begin to live a better life. Some of these countries paying their children salaries have this law implemented, so children have access to finances to live a quality life.

Every child deserves a quality life. Regulating the number of children in every family will definitely make things better for everyone; quality living generally will be guaranteed to a large extent, and I long to see this law implemented someday in my country.

Chai this one touched me though, a seven-year-old learning mechanic, is terrible. With these points you've made I agree with you that the government should implement a regulatory body that will regulate the size of a family so children can have a better education.

The reason goes beyond a better education but quality living generally. For some parents who wouldn't control the number of children themselves, the policy will serve as a guide
Thanks for visiting 🥰

Hmmmm
That's terrible those days

To start with even though I'm in support or family planning and having a birthday control policy implemented on our country, still you personally need to give us a Fourth child, we want a baby girl .😂😂😂

But the without this policy, it makes us have many uncater for children who are roaming the streets.

But regular helps the family cut cost and help the family and country resources more available to everyone.

The sad part of all this is that, it’s those who do not have well paying jobs that have so many kids.

They would later subject the poor kids to so much suffering. Nothing like proper diet , education or whatsoever. It’s sad seeing things like this happen.

I think Africa needs to take a look at regulating childbirth for our own good.

Exactly the point. Even the rich maintain a smaller family size more than the poor and I begin to wonder why this kind of mentality from some low income family
The need for child regulation in Africa cannot be overstated

They don’t have anything to do so they will just be giving birth. So many factors come into play if you ask me.

Before making the decision to have children, we must first think about whether we have a family and financial structure to welcome them and help them in this life, good planning is essential for having children.

Exactly 💯💯💯
Even before talking about government policies

I think parents should not bring a child into this world if they are not capable of giving the child a good future. I think creating awareness about family planning can be a very good thing.
And in the case of god will take care, I want to say what is the necessity of parents if god needs to take care of every single responsibility directly.

To think that it's happening everywhere around us and there is no stopping is really a cause for concern, only two I have is not easy, all these parent with plenty children don't care because if they do, no one will tell them to stop at two or three and the more annoying part is that it's the low income earners( trying not to use the poor word) that are guilty of this, suffering innocent children.

By the way, I'm in support of Grandpa, do quick o, we are capable😅

Hahaha 😂
Your last statement spoiled this comment oo 😂🤣

You and Grandpa should learn to avoid me oo 😂

The time where people can rely on extended family to take care of their own children is king gone. Now, whether you like it or not, you must take care of your own kids. It's just sad that this is only a mistake you can regret after the fact. Because once it's done, you can't undo it. And it can derail some people plans for life.

Family planning is really important!

Exactly, once is done, no one can undone it. Family planning is a necessity

I fail to understand why bring children into the world to suffer and live in subhuman conditions, that is very selfish on the part of the parents. It is important for a country to regulate the birth rate, especially in low-income families. These children do not have the opportunity to study properly and experience very unpleasant situations that later turn them into delinquents. It is very easy to leave the destiny of others in the hands of God, we should not think like that, God provides if we have faith but parents instill values and behaviors to their children. These parents are creating social resentment, which affects the government of the country and its citizens.

Parents have a big role to play in this regard aside the government to start with. Before bringing in children to this world, it's important to check our resources..this way, we can reduce the number of children we plan to birth and avoid subjecting them to hardship

@nkemakonam89. Whatever you see in Lagos, I can assure you that you've not seen anything compared to what we are battling with in the northern part of Nigeria. Here, it is a belief that it is wrong and sinful to intentionally stop the coming of a child to this world. It's a weird belief. I am an advocate of government intervention. It may be difficult to force couples to embrace birth control in the North but every parent can be held responsible for the well-being of their children. When they are being punished for negligence, no one would tell them to stop giving birth before they stop.

I think I can relate to what you are saying because many times, they are deporting young ladies from north to Lagos to serve as maids to strangers. I have seen these alot and sensed that it could be these parents birthing many children..if not, why should I release my child to go live with a stranger in another state ?

Yes... That happens a lot. The children that are supposed to be in school would be left to work in a strange land not just to cater for themselves, but send proceeds back home. A very difficult situation.

Chai that your neighbor is not trying at all, I can't imagine myself suffering and still getting pregnant lol.

It will be very hard for the Nigerian Government to implement a birth control policy due to religious reasons. I think it is left for an individual to give birth to several kids according to their capacity, no child deserves to be born without adequate planning and care.

Hahaha. A groundnut seller with 8 children? Some people hide under the canopy that God will provide, yes, He will but it doesn't mean one should not apply wisdom and be enlightened na.

I wouldn't want to give birth to children and start sharing them around relatives to help take care of them, instead would plan how many kids I want. I don't want what happened with my parents to happen to me too. My parents couldn't take care of us because of finances, hence scattering us around relatives but thank God for today. All these experiences are for us to learn from and be awakened.

Parents don't want to survive their child in such environment. But I think they should make some plannings. First they should think about a total future plan before birth of their child. Impressive and strong story.

Sometimes, the pressure from the family weighs upon some couples to have more children, couple should plan to have children that they can care for so that they do not bring innocent children into this world despite the pressure to have more.

Popped in from Dreemport, always an awesome #dreemerforlife.

On a normal ground, no family member should pressurise anyone about the number of children to born..it's totally wrong
They won't be there to take responsibilities

Exactly 💯

The brunt of all these numerous child births rests on the women so why can't a woman go for family planning to save herself and prevent bringing children to this world to suffer. The men only does what they know how best to do, but women should protect themselves. Na dem dey suffer pass.

#dreemerforlife

And when you talk, they tell you that it's God that provides for children. You'll see them disturbing other family members to send them money, for their kids, like this ones have no problems to take care of.

I'll always say it, it's better to plan well and plan to have kids based on your level of income.

Always a #dreemerforlife
