The Lengths We Do To Have Safe Drinking Water

Please don't follow my example to avoid your device of accidentally getting wet.

For people to live, securing a good source of food was necessary in order for us to have the energy that we need in doing everyday task but at the same time, we should not neglect acquiring a clean source of water. After all, studies said that a person can live for 3 week without food but without water, surviving for 3 days will be really hard since this transparent liquid with almost no taste consist of up to 60% of our body, helping to regulate our body heat and helps to remove the excess and waste product in our body. However, even though water looks clean, it can be a home to different bacteria and viruses or be contaminated by harmful chemicals that cannot be seen from the naked eye so we need to work with measures in order to make sure that they are safe for human consumption.

IMG_20240430_141001.jpgThe nearest deep well pump near me that is maintained by the community for unexpected situations.

Nowadays, most households in my area, including us, uses the services of a water company to supply us with water which have undergone some filtration process to clean the water before it comes to the household's faucets but that was not the case from 13 years ago. That time, our area was not as developed as it is right now so in order to get water, we need to manually fetch the water on deep well pumps which takes the water under the earth and so, they do not undergone any filtration process and does have any means for us of making sure that the water is safe from drinking. So for us to make sure that the water that we will use on our food and for drinking was safe, we are undergoing with the following process.

  • Before we pump water, we placed a cloth of the pump's faucet as a kind of a filter to separate the minerals and sand from the water. On some cases, when the pump was not used for a long time, the water becomes cloudy and sandy so we use this to make the water that comes from the pump transparent.

  • Once that we have fetch the water, we will transfer then on a dedicated drum container where we will let the water rest for a day which will allow the smaller particles that was not filtered by the cloth to subside in the bottom of the container so that we will only get the clear water.

  • Finally, we will boil the water in order to kill any bacteria or germs that lives in the water and after cooling it, place it on a clean container and the water was now safe to drink.

Given that I have migrated from our current home when I was 6, it means that we have been relying on deep well pumps for at least 11 years for all our water needs and during that time, I have not get any disease that is directly linked on the water that we consume so it is safe to say that the procedures that we make, although requires more effort has proved to be able to provide us with a clean water to drink.

At the same time, this same bothersome procedures are also the reason why many of us have switched to water service even though we can have water for technically zero cost and even if these water companies can be very much unreliable for keeping a steady supply of water despite continuously increasing their prices. As I said above, the water that the water company supplied have undergone filtering process and so they say that the water they supply was potable for drinking at least when it was on their water treatment facility. But given that the water they serve will come through different pipes that are usually installed near the drainage system, a leak could make the water contaminated so at least in our home, we do not use their water for drinking purposes or for cooking. Instead, we bough water from water purifying stations. A container of water cost only $ .025 and for a week, we can use 5 or more containers of water so the other two containers comes as a reserve while the we wait for the water to be delivered.

Typically, water purifying stations would just lend their containers to their customers but we decided to have our own containers so they would just supply water on us. As their containers are delivered from different customers, it is unsure whether it was used for other things and at the same time, the people delivering the water might do a sloppy job in cleaning them so although the water was clear, the container might not. So by owning the containers, we can be sure that it was not used on other things and even be able to clean the containers sending it to them.

I like your explanation that water contamination can also come from the container. This is important because even if the water is clean or already treated, if it gets into a dirty container, it is as good as dirty water and the end product would be similar to water that was not treated.

indeed! we must make sure that both the water and its container are clean for our safety.
