“OK, but, if we're having a money-burning party, we gotta be careful because nobody needs a house on fire because that's not safe.”
Seven-year-old Amanda Ludlow, among her siblings and friends, was in essence the risk manager for the group of eleven children none of whom were older than eleven!
“OK, so, it's what's called an analogy,” eleven-year-old Eleanor Ludlow said as she wrapped a loving arm around her little sister. “No actual money will be harmed and there is no actual fire – it just means we are getting rid of the money by taking it and spending it in a way that means it will never make more money.”
“Oh, like if you burn it and stuff,” Amanda said.
“Yep,” Eleanor said.
“OK, so, if it's a party, can we have snacks for everyone?”
“Sure, Mandie – it's a party so we gotta have good food!”
“And then, is it a outside party or a dinner party or a campfire type of party, because we may need a full meal, but then if its a campfire thing we can have smores and stuff, Ellie!”
“Well, given the amount of money George and Edwina are going to be getting from all the people that have been messing up the water main and everything from here to there, we probably can party all day,” Eleanor said.
Amanda considered this.
“OK, but, with all that money they need to get because those people really don't need to have money for all that they are messing up, we gotta be careful not to start a forest fire,” she said.
“It's just an analogy, Mandie,” Eleanor said.
“So, if we're not actually burning it, can we use it to do a new lawn?” Amanda said. “I mean, it's green, so if we cut it up and stand each piece up, we'll be good until the grass grows back!”
“I don't think that's how they do artificial turf,” Eleanor said, “but I'll ask, Mandie.”
