Recuerdo de jovencita que cuanto visitaba la ciudad de la Habana, mis familiares y amigos me mortificaban mucho porque yo insistía en visitar el Capitolio, y con aquel tono burlón y jaranero me echaban a la cara aquello de que los provincianos lo primero que querían cuando llegaban a la Habana, era tomarse una foto junto a la escalinata imponente del monumental edificio, para después presumir ante sus amistades con una prueba contundente del hecho.
Tal vez, no por burla sino por COSTUMBRE, la mole de granito, piedra de capellanía, y más de 50 variedades de mármoles, no contenía ningún interés particular que valiera motivos de visita para los residentes naturales de la capital del país.
...Algo así como que los parisinos ignoran aburridos y distantes a la Torre Eiffel en sus paseos por la ciudad...
Después, por cuestión de prioridades familiares, no pude hacer esa visita hasta pasados mis 13 años, y aunque quedé bastante impresionada, no pude apreciar con justicia la exquisita arquitectura del edificio más extraordinario de la ciudad de la Habana.
Por suerte, este viaje estuvo acompañado por un clima super agradable y el tiempo suficiente para disfrutar con deliciosa precisión cada detalle del idiomático lugar.

I remember as a young girl that when I visited the city of Havana, my relatives and friends used to tease me a lot because I insisted on visiting the Capitol, and with that mocking and jaranero tone they would throw in my face that the first thing the provincials wanted when they arrived in Havana, was to take a picture next to the imposing staircase of the monumental building, and then show off to their friends with a convincing proof of the fact.
Perhaps, not out of mockery but out of CUSTOM, the mass of granite, capellania stone and more than 50 varieties of marble did not contain any particular interest worth visiting for the natural residents of the country's capital.

Later, due to family priorities, I was not able to make that visit until I was 13 years old, and although I was quite impressed, I could not fairly appreciate the exquisite architecture of the most extraordinary building in the city of Havana.
Luckily, this trip was accompanied by super nice weather and enough time to enjoy with delightful precision every detail of the idiomatic place.
Al comienzo.
Igual que en mi último viaje, los trámites que realizamos ese día mi esposo y yo fueron super rápidos, por lo cual, era sí o sí pasarnos por un sitio interesante. Habían dos opciones: El Capitolio o el Museo de arte contemporáneo de Cuba, pero no podíamos negarle la visita a un lugar con tanta historia y casi totalmente restaurado.
Allí entre las calles Prado, Dragones, Industria y San José, está el punto cero, lugar donde nacen los kilómetros medibles a cualquier sitio de este país por la carretera Central.
Su construcción inició en el 1926, (aunque desde el 1910 estuvo tramitándose fue postergada por el alto costo que implicaba) y se inauguró el 20 de Mayo de 1929. El arquitecto al frente de la obra fue un cubano, Eugenio Raymeri Piedra, por encargo del presidente de turno Gerardo Machado.
El edificio estaba diseñado para albergar al cuerpo legislativo de la República de Cuba, como muchas otras edificaciones semejantes en diferentes partes del mundo.
Habría mucho que decir sobre esta obra, pero para tener una idea bien clara, las referencias para su diseño constructivo estaban inspiradas en tres inmuebles internacionales bien icónicos: El Panteón de París, el San Pablo de Londres, y el Capitolio de Estados Unidos.
Lo primero que impresiona cuando lo ves, es el área que ocupa: 43.600 m² de solar, 13.483,3 m² de edificación y 29.391,69 m² de parques y jardines, para un total 207.44 metros de longitud.
At the beginning.
Just like on my last trip, the formalities that my husband and I went through that day were super fast, so it was a no-brainer to stop by an interesting place. There were two options: The Capitol or the Museum of Contemporary Art of Cuba, but we could not deny the visit to a place with so much history and almost completely restored.
There, between the streets Prado, Dragones, Industria and San José, is the zero point, the place where the measurable kilometers to any place in this country are born by the Central Highway.
Its construction began in 1926, (although it had been in process since 1910, it was postponed due to the high cost involved) and was inaugurated on May 20, 1929. The architect in charge of the work was a Cuban, Eugenio Raymeri Piedra, commissioned by President Gerardo Machado.
The building was designed to house the legislative body of the Republic of Cuba, like many other similar buildings in different parts of the world.
There would be much to say about this work, but to have a clear idea, the references for its constructive design were inspired by three iconic international buildings: The Pantheon in Paris, St. Paul's in London, and the U.S. Capitol.
The first thing that impresses when you see it is the area it occupies: 43,600 m² of land, 13,483.3 m² of buildings and 29,391.69 m² of parks and gardens, for a total length of 207.44 meters.

Por su parte, la cúpula, de una altura de 92 metros y 32 de diámetro, fue considerada en su época la quinta más alta del mundo. Consta de 16 nervios, los que se encuentran recubiertos con láminas de oro de 22 kilates.

Allí da comienzo al círculo que acompañará hasta los diferente hemiciclos, comenzando por la cámara de la República -Asamblea de representantes- al norte, y la del Senado al sur, y los demás salones dispuestos para diferentes funciones: decorativas, exposiciones, reuniones, etc.

Existe un hecho muy puntual que llama la atención, hay una estatua en uno de sus jardines interiores que representa al demonio, La estatua de Mefistofeles, que igualmente es llamada El Ángel Caído o El Ángel Rebelde. Lo inusual de ésta esfinge es que está representada con una actitud desafiante, rebelde y amenazante, y su ubicación en este lugar está completamente fuera de contexto, como muchos estudiosos del lugar aseguran, pero sostengo la tesis que puede representar la lucha del mal y del bien presente en todos aquellos sitios gubernamentales y judiciales donde se trabaje para salvaguardar la seguridad y la paz de un país.

There is a very specific fact that calls the attention, there is a statue in one of its interior gardens that represents the devil, the statue of Mephistopheles, which is also called The Fallen Angel or The Rebel Angel. The unusual thing about this sphinx is that it is represented with a defiant, rebellious and threatening attitude, and its location in this place is completely out of context, as many scholars of the place assure, but I sustain the thesis that it can represent the struggle of evil and good present in all those governmental and judicial sites where they work to safeguard the security and peace of a country.
El Capitolio de la Habana representa el poder naciente de una republica, la influencia de las culturas más importantes de la época se reflejan en el más mínimo detalle externo e interno, desde los hermosos jardines franceses que rodean al edificio hasta la diversidad de estilos decorativos de cada salón en específico (hemiciclos).
Existe la creencia popular que nuestro Capitolio supera en tamaño el Capitolio de Washington en EUA, pero solamente tiene una pequeña diferenciación en sus medidas: el Capitolio cubano cuenta con un metro más de alto, un metro más de ancho y un metro más de largo.
El bello impacto de ver tangiblemente que se conservan materiales y objetos de nuestras gestas independentistas, de una república que pujaba por florecer, me llenaron de un inmenso orgullo patrio.

A mí me encantó, y más después de haber leído tanta información que ahora mismo tengo deseos de regresar y disfrutarlo una vez más. Por eso le aconsejo que antes de ir a un sitio como éste, primero que todo, investigue, pregunte, infórmese sobre cada hecho puntual que le ayude a visualizar y entender mucho mejor su visita, eso marcará un diferencia elemental en sus recuerdos.

To think that there are Cubans working to preserve and safeguard an invaluable treasure of our history is a great merit after having gone through a "murky and complicated" period.
Named a National Monument since 2010, this place just manages to make you fall in love as soon as you see it for the first time.

Espectacular este recorrido guiado por tu publicación. Hace unos años visité el Capitolio cuando aún solo comenzaban las acciones de restauración. Quedé impresionado entonces, ahora todo está más hermoso y conservado. Sin duda un mérito de la oficina del historiador para resaltar.

Recuerdo los fotógrafos ambulantes que estaban siempre frente al Capítulo con una cámaras antiguas. En aquellos tiempos cuando no habían celulares tenían la clientela garantizada. 😉

La verdad es que lo disfruté muchísimo,no pude oír a la guía en el recorrido por querer tomarle foto a todo, las cuidadoras de los hemiciclos siempre me velaban porque era la última del grupo en cada lugar que recorrimos.
