Hello everybody! To continue telling my trip to Scotland, in the previous post I finished it when it was starting to rain in Edinburgh and we had to go to Glasgow, because my friend had to take the flight back home that same day from Glasgow. The trains between both cities were late and we just had to run in the rain to the bus station, fortunately there were seats inside the bus and we could sit down paying the ticket to the driver.
We were an hour and a half more or less, maybe a little more until we arrived to Glasgow, specifically to Buchanan station.

Para seguir contando mi viaje a Escocia, en el anterior post lo finalicé cuando estaba comenzado a llover en Edimburgo y teníamos que irnos a Glasgow, porque mi amigo debía coger el vuelo de vuelta a su casa ese mismo día desde Glasgow. Los trenes entre ambas ciudades estaban atrasados y solo nos quedó ir corriendo bajo la lluvia a la estación de buses, afortunadamente había plazas dentro del bus y nos pudimos sentar pagando el ticket al conductor.
Estuvimos hora y media más o menos, quizá un poco más hasta llegar a Glasgow, en concreto a la estación Buchanan.
There we said goodbye to Mesh who went to catch the bus for his flight, I took the picture of this romantic sculpture that was inside the station, and Ilias and I put our raincoats / umbrellas back on because in Glasgow it was also raining, although not so much anymore. We were not far from the hostel where we were going to stay (this time, it was no longer an apartment) but the one we stayed in, called Euro Hostel, had rooms with only one bunk bed, so luckily we would sleep just the two of us, with no strangers.
Allí nos despedimos de Mesh que se fue a coger el bus para su vuelo, tomé la foto de esta romántica escultura que había en el interior de la estación, e Ilias y yo nos volvimos a colocar el chubasquero / paraguas porque en Glasgow también llovía, aunque ya no tanto. No estabamos muy lejos del albergue donde nos íbamos a alojar (esta vez, ya no era apartamento) pero en el que estuvimos, que se llama Euro Hostel, tenían habitaciones de sólo una litera, así que por suerte dormiríamos solamente nosotros dos, sin nadie desconocido.
That day we arrived almost at night, and after all the walking we had been doing in Edinburgh since the morning, we did not explore the city at all. In this hostel the kitchen was shared, as was the fridge and freezer, but it was quite spacious and connected to a large living room with TV, tables, sofas and books where you could sit and eat or relax.
Ese día al llegar casi de noche, y después de toda la caminata que llevábamos desde por la mañana haciendo en Edimburgo, no exploramos nada la ciudad. En este albergue la cocina era compartida, al igual que la nevera y el congelador, pero era bastante amplia y estaba comunicada con un gran salón con TV, con mesas, sofás y libros donde podías sentarte a comer o a relajarte.
I didn't take pictures of the living room because there was always someone sitting there, so out of respect I didn't take them. We went to the supermarket to buy something for dinner that night, and for breakfast the following days. There were a couple of things that caught my attention in the Tesco supermarket: One, was that they sold a Spanish beer called Cruzcampo, which I have to say, is the WORST in my country, it tastes like cat piss and 99.99% of Spanish beer drinkers hate it or do not consider it a beer, so, that in Scotland they have this reference of Spanish beer, it's a shame 🤣. Besides, for that price!
No realicé fotos del salón porque siempre había alguien allá sentado, así que por respeto no las hice. Acudimos a comprar al supermercado algo para cenar esa noche, y para desayunar los días siguientes. Hubieron un par de cosas que me llamaron la atención en el supermercado Tesco: Una, era que vendían una cerveza española llamada Cruzcampo, que he de decir, es la PEOR de mi país, sabe a pis de gato y el 99,99% de españoles cerveceros la odiamos o no la consideramos una cerveza, así que, que en Escocia tengan esta referencia de la cerveza española, es una lástima 🤣. Además, ¡por ese precio!
The other thing was that I found paella, but with chorizo. Paella in Spain does NOT have chorizo. 🤣 nor does it have chili, nor any of the things it says in the ingredients. Better to call this rice with stuff but, not paella hahaha.
La otra cosa, fue que encontré paella, pero con chorizo. La paella en España NO lleva chorizo. 🤣 ni lleva chili, ni ninguna cosa que pone en los ingredientes. Mejor a esto llamémosle "arroz con cosas" pero, no paella jajaja.
After a while in the supermarket, my friend Ilias' umbrella disappeared and we spent some time looking for it. He had it in his shopping basket (or so we thought) but, we don't know what happened to it. As I started talking to people in Glasgow, to the supermarket staff in case they had seen my friend's umbrella, I noticed that their accent was much thicker than in Edinburgh, so if they spoke fast ( to me, I only understood 2 or 3 words of the sentence, and depending on the context I tried to relate and make the puzzle inside my mind, to understand what they were telling me😅, my friend, who is not an English speaker either because he is Greek, had the same thing happening to him as to me.
In the end we couldn't find the umbrella, and we went back to the hostel to drop the groceries and have dinner. The hostel had its own pub downstairs, where they had karaokes and activities, pints were 3 pounds so we thought it was a good price to have one.
Después de un rato en el supermercado, el paraguas de mi amigo Ilias desapareció y estuvimos un rato buscándolo. Lo llevaba en la cesta de la compra (o eso creíamos) pero, no sabemos qué fue de él. Al empezar a hablar con la gente en Glasgow, con el personal del supermercado por si habían visto el paraguas de mi amigo, me di cuenta que su acento era mucho más marcado que en Edimburgo, así que si me hablaban rápido ( a mí, que no soy angloparlante) solamente entendía 2 o 3 palabras de la frase, y ya según el contexto intentaba relacionar y hacer el puzzle dentro de mi mente, para comprender lo que me estaban diciendo😅, a mi amigo, que tampoco es angloparlante porque es griego, le sucedía lo mismo que a mí.
Al final no encontramos el paraguas, y volvimos al albergue para dejar la compra y cenar. El albergue tenía su propio pub abajo, donde hacían karaokes y actividades, las pintas las tenían a 3 libras así que nos pareció buen precio para tomarnos una.
After eating what we had bought for dinner, we had one more beer, but this time from the Tennet we had bought in the supermarket. One of the hostel workers saw us drinking it at the door and warned us that although in Edinburgh drinking a beer in the street was allowed, in Glasgow it had been forbidden and we could be fined. So, we grabbed a coffee cup from Tesco and refilled the cup with the beer, so as not to arouse suspicion. 😎. We also bought a bottle of Irn-Bru, a carbonated Scottish soft drink. It reminded me a lot of the typical Colombian "colombiana" soft drink that I had tried previously.
Tras cenar lo que habíamos comprado, nos tomamos una cerveza más, pero esta vez de las Tennets que habíamos comprado en el supermercado. Uno de los trabajadores del albergue nos vio tomándola en la puerta y nos advirtió de que a pesar de que en Edimburgo el beber una cerveza en la calle estaba permitido, en Glasgow había sido prohibido y podían multarnos. Así que, cogimos un vasito de café en Tesco y rellenamos el vasito con la cerveza, para no levantar sospechas. 😎. También compramos una botella Irn-Bru, un refresco escocés carbonatado. Me recordaba mucho al refresco "colombiana" típico de Colombia que ya había probado previamente.

Bebimos la cerveza dentro de nuestros vasitos de café, mirando las vistas al río Clyde.
Before going to bed, we booked a free walking tour of Glasgow because on a tourist level, this city apparently had fewer points of interest than the capital, but there were also things worth visiting, and some of them I ran out of time to see because of the schedules. I would have been happier to follow my own itinerary that I had already prepared in advance because I had been checking online what I thought was worth seeing, but Ilias wanted to go on the free walking tour, so that's what we did the next morning, after my latte and gingerbread cookies.
Antes de irnos a dormir, reservamos un free walking tour por Glasgow porque a nivel turístico, esta ciudad tenía al parecer menos puntos de interés que la capital, pero también había cosas que merecían la pena visitar, y algunas de ellas me quedé sin tiempo de poder verlas por los horarios. Me habría gustado más seguir mi propio itinerario que ya tenía preparado de antemano porque había estado revisando por internet lo que creía que merecía la pena ver, pero Ilias quiso ir al free walking tour, así que eso es lo hicimos a la mañana siguiente, tras mi café con leche y galletas de jengibre.

In this square, which is considered the main square of this city, are located the town hall and several monuments, as well as the train station.
En esta plaza, que se considera la principal de esta ciudad, se encuentran el ayuntamiento y diversos monumentos, y también la estación de trenes.
we continued walking down buchanan street, and saw a map of the city on a sculpture.

In this neighborhood of Merchan city, there are all the fashion designer stores, bars and restaurants that did not seem very cheap and the gallery of modern art (GoMA).
En este barrio de Merchan city, están todas las tiendas de diseñadores de moda, bares y restaurantes que no parecían muy económicos y la galería de arte moderno (GoMA)
Also in front of the museum of modern art, there is the statue of Wellington with the traffic cone on his head.
The cone on this duke also has its own particular history, but in short, it was the act of some funny person who 30 years ago placed it there, and for some reason, the people of Glasgow also found it funny and artistic. The city council tried several times in the past to remove that cone from there, but at dawn the cone was back on because someone put it there. In the end many signatures were collected so that the council would allow to have that traffic cone on the Duke of Wellington, thus becoming a symbol of Glasgow.
También enfrente del museo de arte moderno, está la estatua de Wellington con el cono de tráfico en la cabeza.
El cono sobre este duque tiene también su particular historia, pero en resumen, fue acto de alguna persona graciosa que hace 30 años lo colocó ahí, y por alguna razón, a la gente de Glasgow también le pareció gracioso y además, artístico. El ayuntamiento intentó en el pasado varias veces quitar ese cono de ahí, pero al amanecer volvía a tener el cono puesto porque alguien se lo ponía. Al final se recolectaron muchas firmas para que el ayuntamiento permitiese tener ese cono de tráfico sobre el duque de Wellington, convirtiéndose así en un símbolo de Glasgow.
We started to see some of the many graffiti that are around the city, this street art was promoted by the city council of Glasgow, but then some artists were joining. There you will not find graffiti that do not say anything, all are pure art.
Empezamos a ver algunos de los mucho graffiti que hay por la ciudad, este street art fue impulsado bastante por el ayuntamiento de Glasgow, pero luego algunos artistas se fueron sumando. Allí no encontraras graffitis que no dicen nada, todos son puro arte.
After the free walking tour, we paid 10 pounds to the guide.
Después del free walking tour, le pagamos 10 libras al guía.
And as we knew that a quite typical Scottish dish was the Haggis, we asked the guide where we could try it in small portion format, just to try it, because we were not sure we would like it. I personally don't like offal, and Haggis consist of just that: lamb lung, liver, heart, and stomach, quite spiced and seasoned, ground into minced meat, and accompanied by roast potatoes or mashed potatoes.
He recommended us to go to a place called Rab Ha's which was close to where we had finished the tour, there he told us that we could try this dish but in small portions, and inside a kind of battered croquette. Everything battered tastes better, I thought. So Ilias and I decided to go there so as not to leave Scotland without having tried the Haggis, even if not with the original presentation of the dish.
Y como sabíamos que un plato bastante típico escocés eran los Haggis, le preguntamos al guía dónde podríamos probarlo en formato de pequeña porción, sólo por probar, porque no estábamos seguros de que nos gustase. A mí personalmente no me gusta la casquería, y los Haggis consisten en eso: pulmón, hígado, corazón, y estómago de cordero, bastante condimentado y especiado, triturado en carne picada, y acompañado de patatas asadas o puré de patata.
Nos recomendó ir a un sitio llamado Rab Ha's que estaba cerca de donde habíamos acabado el tour, allí nos dijo que podríamos probar este plato pero en pequeña porción, y en el interior de una especie de croqueta rebozada. Todo lo rebozado sabe mejor, pensé. Así que Ilias y yo decidimos ir allí para no marcharnos de Escocia sin haber probado el Haggis, aunque no sea con la presentación original del plato.
We ordered it to go and sat outside on a bench. They had put it in a little box and it was accompanied by a sauce, which I don't know exactly what it was, I imagine it was some kind of sauce with meat broth because of how it tasted, but it was pretty good. So good, that Ilias finished the sauce inside the box with his fingers until it was finished 🤣 he said, because they didn't put a spoon or anything haha.
Lo pedimos para llevar y nos sentamos fuera en un banco. Nos lo habían metido en una cajita y estaba acompañado de una salsa, que no sé de qué era exactamente, imagino que alguna salsa con caldo de carne por cómo era su sabor, pero estaba bastante buena. Tan buena, que Ilias se terminó la salsa del interior de la caja rebañando con sus dedos hasta que se terminó 🤣, dijo que, porque no le pusieron una cuchara ni nada jaja.
When I tasted it, I was surprised that in spite of being casquería, perhaps because it was battered inside a round croquette, perhaps because of the sauce and the spices that accompanied it, it was very tasty. It did not give the sensation of eating a lung, heart or stomach, but of simple spiced minced meat, with vegetables inside, there were even chickpeas inside.
I will continue telling my trip through this city in future posts to avoid it getting long 😉.
Al probarlo me sorprendió, que a pesar de ser casquería, quizás por estar rebozado dentro de una croqueta redonda, quizás por la salsa y por las especias que le acompañaban, estaba muy rico. No daba la sensación de estar comiéndote un pulmón, corazón o estómago, sino de simple carne picada especiada, con verduritas dentro, incluso había garbanzos en su interior.
Continuaré contando mi viaje por esta ciudad en próximos posts para evitar que se haga largo 😉
