Giant Fig Tree Walk - Sunshine Coast, Australia

in Worldmappin10 months ago

We´re 100% outdoor people and try to spend as much time in nature as possible. That´s why we do so many road trips and vaccations at destinations we haven´t seen before. It became something like a hobby to tick off different spots that are famous and have beautiful nature.

Problem is that if you stay longer at certain places, like we usually do, we run out of attractions quite fast. For this reason we did a 3 week camping roadtrip to the tropical north of Queensland Australia, hende I haven´t been online for quite some time.

Anyway, this post is not about the tropical north, its about a day trip that we did the last weekend before we were driving north that I´ve never shared.

The whole sunshine coast, as well as the hinterland of it is absolutely amazing and offers so many different attractions like waterfalls, mountains to climb and even some small rainforests. Since we´ve been here many times and always stayed for months we almost know every little corner here, as well as the Giant Fig Tree near Kenilworth and the junction of Little Yabba Creek and Mary River.

The Figtree is about 1 hour drive away from the coast and offers many of these amazing Lookouts like the one above. Its a beautiful drive to there with some cool towns on the way, like Kenilworth, known for its car and bike meet ups.

The Figtree walk itself lays on the picturesque Yabba Creek that also offers a small free camping area. The walk is about 1.1km over a boardwalk and is wheelchair friendly. As its winter and we visited in the early morning it was a bit chilly in the forest but even more beautiful.

On the way to the Figtree you come across this giant beauty here. No, thats not the giant one, there are several Moreton Bay fig trees and some of them are 150 years old.

The giant tree is about half way through this amazing rainforest walk. Even in the morning, or probably especially in the morning there are so many sounds in the forest that it is almost more fun to just sit down and listen to the sound. The whole way there was something high up in the trees. It wasn´t a bird and since there are no monkeys here I was pretty sure its a Possum. My findings later proofed this.

The tree is that huge that its actually pretty hard to get a decent photo of it. You need to see it yourself and spend some time there. Definitely a special tree. On the way back I´ve found some proof about the animal in the trees. Little Possum dropped us a tiny present on the boardwalk.

We finished the walk just in time to have a lunch break. Who gets up early needs a early lunch, its that simple. :)

Luckily there is that beautiful camp/Day use area with toilets and electric barbecue and in my opinion it does not get much better for a lunchbreak spot. Its that nice of a spot that we´re thinking to camp here for 1-2 nights in summer. Its beautiful, its free and in nature and has everything you need.

For a good barbecue lunch you don´t need much. We picked up some fresh minced beef in the morning and some buns and made us a delicious burger.

On the way home we made two quick stops at the side of the road to enjoy some magnificent views over the sunshine coast. Thats something I love here, especially in the sunshine coast hinterland you sometimes only need to pull over and have the most amazing view ever.
