We visited Hamburg in February and there are still a few excursions that I haven't shown yet.
For example, our day in the Schanzenviertel.
The district is actually called Sternschanze, but is usually referred to as Schanzenviertel. Until 2008, Sternschanze was part of the Altona, Mitte and Elmsbüttel districts and then became an independent district with the name Sternschanze.
Like all trendy districts, its appearance is slowly changing. The houses are being renovated and rents are rising.
But it is still a very cozy place to enjoy the flair of the young scene.
The stadium of the now Bundesliga club St. Pauli is directly adjacent to this district. I assume that after a home game of the club, the bars and restaurants there are very busy. But they already are.
We got off at the exhibition hall and walked from there towards the Schanzenviertel.
Here is the Hanseatic Higher Regional Court.
Right next to it is the district court and the criminal justice building.
A few meters away is a Russian Orthodox church called St. John of Kronstadt.
If you look along Karolinenstraße from there, you can see Hamburg's television tower.
But we weren't there. Unfortunately we didn't have the time.
In the middle of the way, we also saw the Hamburg trade fair. It was all very close together. We prepared ourselves to only see the Schanzenviertel, but after just a few meters, it was enough for two days.
We moved on to Marktstraße. A small street that looked very appealing to us. Small boutiques and quirky pubs.
Houses like this can be found there. We have already noticed that people are moving away from the chic, expensive residential areas of the city center. The whole thing has slipped more and more into the alternative corner, which is also what we wanted. I find it more pleasant this way than constantly watching the gentlemen with Rolexes at the overpriced bar counters.
A little jump to the parallel street was necessary to photograph this building. The Feldstraßenbunker.
I have rarely seen such an impressive building. The photo doesn't really do justice to the dimensions of this bunker. It is currently being renovated and will soon be open to the public.
It is somehow a mixture between a World War II bunker and modern architecture on the roof.
I thought the slogan on a coffee shop was pretty good.
Then the Schanzenviertel started.
When it got dark, we looked for a vegetarian restaurant. Since I had started eating vegetarian three weeks earlier, I was very happy that there was a relatively large selection of such restaurants in Hamburg.
We decided on the restaurant Cham. It had excellent reviews and we were not disappointed.
The restaurant was actually quite full. But there were only two of us, so we managed to get a seat in the back corner after a short time.
Honestly, it was one of the most fantastic meals I've ever eaten.
Vegan or not, I can't remember feeling so many explosions of flavor in my mouth. I know a thing or two about food. I am a chef myself, have worked in various Michelin-starred restaurants, was a chef at the Hotel Adlon Berlin, worked in the kitchen of the 7th best hotel in the world in 2000, etc. and have owned a hotel with two restaurants for years. But this meal was one of the best I have ever eaten.
And for a fair price.
This is what the Schanze looks like at night.
Here again this bunker at night. On this day the soccer club St. Pauli had a home game. Next to this bunker you can see the floodlights illuminating the pitch. The stadium “Am Millerntor” is right next to the bunker.
Then a small alley appeared. The Bäckerbreitergang.
Here you could really see what used to happen here. This side corridor is probably still full of old life. It looked a bit like the Tacheles on Oranienburger Strasse 30 years ago. The slightly older (over 40) Berliners probably know what I mean.
This would actually be exactly where I would go in the evening. Unfortunately, we were too early and there was nothing going on there yet.
So that was our trip to Hamburg's Schanzenviertel.
Im Februar haben wir Hamburg besucht und es gibt noch ein paar Ausflüge, die ich noch nicht gezeigt habe.
Zum Beispiel unser Tag im Schanzenviertel.
Eigentlich heißt der Stadtteil Sternschanze, wird aber meistens Schanzenviertel genannt. Bis 2008 war die Sternschanze teil der Bezirk Altona, Mitte und Elmsbüttel und wurde danach ein selbstständiger Stadtteil mit dem Namen Sternschanze.
Wie alle Trendviertel, verändert sich so langsam das Erscheinungsbild. Die Häuser werden Renoviert und die Mieten steigen an.
Es ist aber immer noch ein sehr gemütlicher Ort um den Flair der jungen Szene zu genießen.
Das Stadion des nun Bundesliga Vereines St. Pauli grenzt direkt an dieses Viertel an. Ich gehe mal davon aus, dass nach einem Heimspiel des Vereines, die Bars und Restaurants dort sehr gut besucht sind. Das sind sie allerdings auch so schon.
Wir sind an der Messehalle ausgestiegen und von dort aus Richtung Schanzenviertel gelaufen.
Hier ist das Hanseatische Oberlandesgericht.
Gleich danaben befindet sich das Landgericht und das Strafjustizgebäude.
Ein paar Meter weiter steht eine russische Orthodoxe Kirche mit Namen Heiliger Johannes von Kronstadt.
Wenn man von dort die Karolinenstraße entlang schaut, sieht man den Fernsehturm Hamburgs.
Wir waren aber nicht dort. Die Zeit hat uns leider gefehlt.
Mitten auf dem Weg, sahen wir dann auch noch die Messe von Hamburg. Das alles war schon sehr nahe aufeinander. Wir haben uns darauf eingestellt, nur das Schanzenviertel anzusehen, aber schon nach ein paar Metern, war es Stoff für zwei Tage.
Wir sind weiter in die Marktstraße. Eine kleine Strasse, die uns optisch sehr entgegen kam. Kleine Boutiquen und ausgefallene Kneipen.
Solche Häuser sind dort zu finden. Wir haben schon gemerkt, dass man sich von dem schicken teuren Wohngegenden der Innenstadt entfernt. Das ganze ist immer mehr in die Alternative Ecke gerutscht, was auch unseren Vorstellungen entsprochen hat. Ich finde es so angenehmer, als ständig den Herren mit Rolex an den überteuerten Bartresen zu zuschauen.
Ein kleiner Sprung auf die Parallelstraße war nötig um diesen Bau zu Fotografieren. Der Feldstraßenbunker.
Ich habe selten so einen beeindruckenden Bau gesehen. Das Foto wird der Dimension dieses Bunkers nicht wirklich gerecht. Er wird gerade Renoviert und bald soll er wohl der Öffentlichkeit zugänglich sein.
Er ist irgendwie eine Mischung zwischen einen Bunker des zweiten Weltkrieges und moderner Architektur auf dem Dach.
Den Spruch an einem Kaffee fand ich ziemlich gut.
Dann ging das Schanzenviertel los.
Als es dunkel wurde, suchten wir ein vegetarisches Restaurant. Da ich drei Wochen vorher angefangen habe, mich vegetarisch zu ernähren, war ich sehr glücklich, dass in Hamburg die Auswahl solcher Restaurants relativ groß war.
Wir haben uns für das Restaurant Cham entschieden. Es hatte hervorragende Bewertungen und wir wurden nicht enttäuscht.
Tatsächlich war das Restaurant ziemlich voll. Wir waren aber nur zu zweit und haben deshalb nach kurzer Zeit einen Platz im hinteren Eck noch bekommen.
Ganz ehrlich, es war eines der fantastischsten Essen, die ich jemals gegessen habe.
Vegan hin oder her, ich kann mich nicht mehr erinnern, so viel Geschmacksexplosionen im Mund gespürt zu haben. Ein bisschen Ahnung habe ich vom Essen. Ich bin selbst Küchenmeister, habe in diversen Sternerestaurants gearbeitet, war Koch im Hotel Adlon Berlin, war im Jahr 2000 im 7 besten Hotel der Welt in der Küche tätig etc und habe seit Jahren ein Hotel mit zwei Restaurants. Aber dieses Essen war mit das beste, was ich jemals gegessen habe.
Und das für einen fairen Preis.
So sieht die Schanze bei Nacht aus.
Hier auch nochmal dieser Bunker bei Nacht. An diesem Tag hatte der Fussballklub St. Pauli ein Heimspiel. Neben diesem Bunker kann man die Flutlichter sehen, die das Spielfeld beleuchten. Das Stadion "Am Millerntor" ist direkt neben dem Bunker.
Dann tauchte eine kleine Gasse auf. Der Bäckerbreitergang.
Hier merkte man extrem, was sich früher hier abspielte. In diesem Seitengang ist wohl noch das Altnative Leben unterwegs. Es sah ein bisschen so aus wie das Tacheles an der Oranienburger Strasse vor 30 Jahren. Die etwas älteren (Ü40) Berliner wissen wohl was ich meine.
Das wäre eigentlich genau die Ecke, wo ich abends hin gehen würde. Leider waren wir zu früh und es war dort noch nichts los.
So das war unser Ausflug ins Schanzenviertel Hamburgs.
I would definitely like to see more of this part of town. The food looks really appetising and I can imagine it tasted amazing too!
