Orchha The Wonderland

One of many majestic temples of Orchha

Orchha is a smalltown in the state of Madhya Pradesh in India. Situated along the banks of River Betwa, this town boasts of numerous temples and forts that have withstood the test of time. I have traveled to this place twice and I still yearn for a few more trips to Orchha because the place has so much to offer.

India being a country of vivid weathers cools down to the freezing point in my home state. However, at the same time a few thousand kilometers down south in Orchha the weather is most pleasant. One can take a flight or take a train to reach here. Train rides in the winters through the plains of Central India is something one should always look forward to. Trains chugging through fields that expand beyond horizon is a surreal experience. Foggy mornings engulfing the locomotive while you wait for the tea vendor to give you a hot cup of tea at a bustling platform is a sight to behold.

The Welcome Sight at Orchha

And then there is Orchha, the train will halt at the nondescript railway station and for once you would think if it were actually going to be worth it to travel this far. However, the moment you step out of the train, towering forts would welcome you in all the directions. Royal Chhatris, (the Royal Cenotaphs) that are like a canopy above an architectural structure would be looking at you from a far-off distance. The Betwa river silently flowing by tells you the story of this 500-year-old wonderland if you listen silently.

A 500 year old civilization that has seen numerous wars and weathers, what could be a better storyteller than that

Chaturbhuj Temple - literally meaning the one with four arms, this temple is located in the heart of the town and one can have a bird eye's view of entire Orchha from top of this temple. Countless stairs would lead you to the top of this temple but every step that you take on those stairs are going to be worth it when you reach at the top.

While we stayed in a modest homestay, one could find luxury hotels as well in Orchha. And you have to believe me that even two days would not be enough to see around Orchha because it has so much to offer.

In the second part, we will explore other major destinations around Orchha.
