If we review the map, we can see that more than 90% of the Chilean border is shared with our country Argentina. Along the more than 6600 km of border that divide our two countries there are numerous land crossings that allow tourists to visit one country or the other. There are also limits defined by mountain ranges, glaciers, rivers and even lakes that belong to both territories. One of the latter is the one I visited on my last trip to Ushuaia: Lake Acigami, being the southernmost body of water that is crossed by the international border ❤️.
Si revisamos un poco el mapa, se puede observar que más del 90% de la frontera chilena está compartida con nuestro país Argentina. A lo largo de los más de 6600 km de límite que dividen nuestros dos países existen numerosos pasos terrestres que permiten a los turistas visitar un país u otro. También hay límites definidos por cordones montañosos, glaciares, ríos e incluso lagos que pertenecen a ambos territorios. Uno de estos últimos es el que visité en mi último viaje a Ushuaia: el Lago Acigami, siendo el cuerpo de agua más al sur que es atravesado por la frontera internacional ❤️.
I did this tour with a guest I met while working at the hostel in Ushuaia. To this day we are in contact because she was one of those people that you like without effort. With her we went to Tierra del Fuego National Park to spend the afternoon after my work day. If it had been up to me, we would have gone by cab or walking, but she insisted on hitchhiking because the people there were very friendly and took tourists without any problem. I was embarrassed to do this, but she energetically arranged transportation for us and succeeded, also without any problems 😅.
Este paseo lo hice con una húesped que conocí mientras trabajaba en el hostel de Ushuaia. Hasta el día de hoy estamos en contacto porque fue de esas personas que te caen bien sin esfuerzo. Con ella nos fuimos hasta el Parque Nacional Tierra del Fuego a pasar la tarde después de mi jornada de trabajo. Si hubiese sido por mí, hubiésemos ido en taxi o caminando, pero ella insistía en ir a dedo porque la gente de ahí era muy amable y llevaba sin problema a los turistas. A mi me daba vergüenza hacer esto, pero ella enérgicamente se encargó de conseguirnos transporte y lo logró, también sin problemas 😅.
When we left we had no fixed destination, so everything we did was improvised. The one who did us the favor of taking us into the park was the driver of a van that was going to pick up the employees of the Alakush visitor center. This place is the only tourist center inside the park that offers dining and recreation services, besides the End of the World Train station. The driver left us at the door of this place, which we could not visit because it was about to close, but it was a good place because we were quite close to Lake Acigami 😃.
Cuando salimos no teníamos un destino fijo, así que todo lo que hicimos fue improvisado. Quién nos hizo el favor de llevarnos hasta adentro del parque era el chofer de una camioneta que iba a buscar a los empleados del centro de visitantes Alakush. Este lugar es el único centro turístico dentro del parque que ofrece servicio de comedor y recreación, además de la estación del Tren del Fin del Mundo. El chofer nos dejó en la puerta de ese lugar, que no pudimos visitar porque ya estaba próximo a cerrar, pero fue un buen lugar porque estábamos bastante cerca del Lago Acigami 😃.
From there we walked along a very simple trail that first took us along the water side of the Lapataia River, from where we could appreciate the snow-capped peaks of the national park. As this visitor center is one of the most chosen destinations to bring tourists in tour groups, we came across quite a lot of people there, but we were still able to take some nice pictures 😃.
Desde ahí caminamos un poco por un sendero muy sencillo que primero nos llevó por el costado del agua del Rio Lapataia, desde donde pudimos apreciar los picos nevados del parque nacional. Como este centro de visitantes es uno de los destinos más elegidos para traer a los turístas en grupos de excursiones, nos cruzamos con bastante gente ahí, pero igual pudimos sacar algunas fotos lindas 😃.
Continuing along the trail, you enter a small lenga forest. This type of trees, thin and tall, were the ones I saw the most on this trip, so I recognized them easily. In this part of the trail there was a wooden shelter, perhaps also with the idea of offering service at some point, but now closed. Also a small children's house, interesting to go exploring, but with a warning sign that stopped us for possible falling trees 😅.
Continuando el sendero, entrabas a un pequeño bosque de lengas. Este tipo de árboles, delgados y altos, fueron de los que más vi en este viaje, por lo que ya los reconocía fácilmente. En esta parte del camino había un refugio de madera, quizás también con la idea de ofrecer servicio en algún momento, pero ahora cerrado. También una pequeña casita de niños, interesante para ir a explorar, pero con un cartel de advertencia que nos detuvo por posible caída árboles 😅.
This trail would be no more than one kilometer in total, which makes it quite friendly for families with children. It is understandable why tour groups come here, but it is worth a visit. If one day the plan is a quiet hike, this is one of the good options within the national park. There are also plenty of things to do, so boredom is not an option 😅.
Este sendero no tendría más de un kilómetro en total, lo que lo vuelve bastante amigable para familias con niños. Es estendible por qué los grupos de turistas vienen acá, pero vale la pena visitarlo. Si algún día el plan es una caminata tranquila, esta es una de las buenas opciones dentro del parque nacional. Igualmente hay muchas cosas para hacer, así que el aburrimiento no es opción 😅.
Once off the trail, you meet the end of the Lapataia River and the great Acigami Lake. This lake was originally called Roca Lake (former president of Argentina), but in recent years it has been renamed after the Yagán, who were the first aboriginal populations of these lands. "Acigami" means "elongated bag", which refers precisely to the shape of this place. To this day it is correct to call the lake by either of the two names, but the locals of Ushuaia told me that for political reasons, they prefer the name Acigami 😶.
Una vez fuera del sendero, te encontras con el fin del Río Lapataia y el gran Lago Acigami. Este lago originalmente se llamaba Lago Roca (ex presidente de Argentina), pero en los últimos años han vuelto a denominarlo con su nombre yagán, quienes fueron las primerás poblaciones aborígenes de estas tierras. "Acigami" significa "bolso alargado", que hace referencia justamente a la forma de este lugar. Hasta el día del hoy es correcto llamar al lago por cualquiera de los dos nombres, pero los lugareños de Ushuaia me dijeron que por cuestiones políticas, prefieren el nombre de Acigami 😶.
Of all this great lake, approximately a quarter belongs to Argentina and the rest is already Chilean territory, so when you look at the horizon you can already see the neighboring country. I found it incredible to be in this place, so far from the end of the world and with so many interesting things to discover. They say that the Chilean Patagonia is just as beautiful as ours, so foreign tourists visit both sides when they are traveling. Someday I would like to see more of "the other side", but in the meantime I'll settle for ours, which is beautiful enough ❤️.
De todo este gran lago, aproximadamente la cuarta parte pertenece a Argentina y el resto ya es territorio chileno, por lo que al mirar al horizonte ya podés ver al país vecino. Me resultó increíble estar en este lugar, tan al fin del mundo y con tantas cosas interesantes para descubrir. Dicen que la patagona chilena es igual de hermosa que la nuestra, por lo que los turistas extranjeros visitan ambos lados cuando están de viaje. Algún día me gustaría conocer más "el otro lado", pero mientras tanto me conformo con el nuestro que bastante belleza tiene ❤️.
After our short hike, the guest and I spent some time drinking mates in front of the water. One of the things we Argentines like to do most is to drink mates in front of a beautiful landscape, and so it happened that day. I was glad to have met a good friend that time, with whom we later shared many other walks. Besides the good memory of a beautiful place, I also have a good memory of her and her influence to encourage me to hitchhike too 😅.
Después de nuestra pequeña caminata, la huésped y yo nos quedamos un buen rato tomando mates frente al agua. Una de las cosas que más nos gusta hacer a los argentinos es tomar mates frente a un paisaje hermoso, y así sucedió ese día. Me alegré por haber conocido a una buena amiga esa vez, con la que después compartimos muchas otras caminatas. Además del buen recuerdo de un lugar hermoso, también lo tengo de ella y de su influencia para me anime a hacer dedo yo también 😅.
