Today we decided to visit this small historical town which become popularly known as "the most Portuguese village of Portugal" due to a government-sponsored competition that awarded twelve historic villages the distinction of Most Portuguese Village of their own province in 1938.

The village is located at the top of a mountain full of gigantic boulders and some of the old houses used the rocks as walls.

It was a very hot day with more than 35ºC but walking through the tiny steep streets was a great pleasure.

Although it was 2 pm when we were there and the sun was killing us, we decided to walk all the way up the ancient castle ruins.

Once we reached the hill pinnacle we first found the ancient church where you could still see some of the holes they made in the rocks to use as a cemetery.

The castle ruins were slightly higher and we were really impressed but their size.

There was an info panel where you could read and see how the castle was after being reconquered in the middle ages.

All in all, a place worth a visit if you happen to be in the Castelo Branco district of Portugal
