☀️ From Kindness and my Work Experience.

March is kindness month and the @dreemport challenge and the Kindness Community invite us, in this second week, to talk about it. Specifically, I want to share some thoughts related to Business and Kindness and generated from some of my personal experience in this area.

One thing I have conceptualized at this point in my life is that when it comes to companies, businesses, jobs, workers and customers, kindness, and friendliness is a pretty scarce commodities. In almost all of my work experiences, there have been far too many times when acts of kindness were conspicuous by their absence.

The most relevant thing I noticed about this aspect, and which left me quite shocked, is that the lack of kindness or goodness is more marked, or is more present, in those who perform functions as employees of the company than in those who are the owners or senior managers of these companies. Especially in mid-level positions or those positions that serve as intermediaries between employees and the company.

I have held very low-level jobs as a laborer or security personnel and, as I progressed in my career, in almost every company, I managed to climb the rungs to get into these intermediate positions and, sometimes, a little higher. I never had a problem starting from scratch in a company and I think that helped me to climb very quickly to higher positions.

Something noticeable in these cases is the fierce competition to makes it harder for you to move up the ladder. On a certain occasion when I worked for a large private security and surveillance services company, my first contact with the company was at the owners' residence, as the family's chauffeur. Although at first, I did not expect to occupy this position, I believe that an act of kindness from the person who interviewed me for the job, allowed me to be placed in that position, which, in the end, turned out to be the best for me.

If there is one thing I must emphasize about the owners of the company and their family while I worked with them, it was their high disposition for kindness and goodness, which they were unstinting in demonstrating at every opportunity. And while I could refer to those demonstrations as being directly related to me, it certainly came very naturally to them. This was one of the innumerable cases of families of high economic position with whom I was related at one time or another, which made me see that most of them are people of a great heart.

But when we go down the ladder of positions to the middle levels within the company, things change drastically. It seems that kindness is the last virtue to be demonstrated, shielding the negative appreciation for this attitude, in the business practices and priorities that allow to generate more money for the company (and its owners), even if that implies becoming a despicable being.

The irony is that, although the owners of the company profess and express their caring attitude, even so, employees who feel that their careers will be more promising if they are less caring, will not hesitate to resort to vile acts to secure a better position, a better salary or sometimes, just the satisfaction of avoiding the joy or tranquility of others at work. And of course there are exceptions, among which I count myself.

After being a driver for the family of the company's owners for almost two years, the kindness of one of its members allowed me to be placed in a supervisory position in the company's structure. From there, I managed to climb up the ladder to a junior management position in one of its branches in the interior of the country, where I finally settled.

There was no shortage of tense and unpleasant moments due to the lack of kindness of those who saw me as competition or simply took pleasure in being unkind. But as the saying goes, good always triumphs. After all the contracts were lost in the city where I was already living, I decided not to return to the capital, as the president and owner of the company had offered me. It was a tempting offer, but I turned it down, tired of the hustle and bustle of living in such an urban and cosmopolitan city.

I never forget the kind gestures of the owner of the company, who was delighted that I celebrated my birthday on the fourth of July. Every year, on that day, he always had the deference to congratulate me personally when I worked with them and then to commute, call, or contact me by any means, which he continued to do even after he left the company until his sensitive passing some six years ago now. Undoubtedly, it has been a great inspiration for me to have shared and known the kind quality of someone I always considered as a friend, Engineer Andrés Germán Olavarría (R.I.P.D.), to whom I will always be grateful for his special attention towards me, extended to his kind family.

To conclude, I believe that companies where kindness is expressed at all levels result in a more humane and competitive organization, which I believe, especially in Latin America, is less quantifiable. Again, I think that the states are the main ones responsible for this, so it should be the model organization and example to follow of practices full of kindness. As the world is today, it is very evident that they are not very interested in this very important virtue, which undoubtedly allows for a happier and more complete life in all aspects.

Kindness makes an Impact on peoples lives forever and kindness in the work place isn't always common. Everyone is lost in the competition of being the best and sometimes forget to help others or be kind.
#dreemerforlife

Your comment is very accurate, kindness is very scarce in work environments. Grateful for the visit.

I think the saying, "it is good to be kind" is very underrated by many, that is why those employee think less of such a great and important virtue.

Your former employer sounds like an amazing human being, may his soul continue to rest in peace.

Thank you for sharing your inspiring story with us.🙏🥰😊
#dreemerforlife

It certainly was, although many did not see it that way, I think it was because they did not know him more closely. Grateful for the visit.

When I remember about entrepreneurs and specifically, owners of large businesses with whom at some point I could have had some relationship (I'm talking about owners of television stations, large print media, large mass production factories and some a little smaller), I don't remember that they are miserable and unkind beings. Although many of their employees had that appreciation, I don't think they ever took the time to really get to know them. But without a doubt, there are those who are not kind at all. Thanks for the comment and support.

In my country the public service has become rotten and in no institution can we find a true interest in citizens, everything is based on political-partisan-ideological clientelism. And Spain walks that same route, I hope Spanish citizens do not allow it or allow themselves to be fooled as happened in my country.
Grateful for your comment.

I sometimes see things like this around me, almost everyone is in competition with one another. Your former boss was amazing.

I hope people get to see that life itself is complicated and we don't need to complicate it further.

#dreemerforlife

Certainly, life is so beautiful without complications, accepting it as it is, with its virtues and defects, which includes people. Thanks for stopping by to read.

There is nothing like being kind in business, it is good for everybody involved, both internally and externally. Unfortunately I fear you are correct in that some people allow a little power to go to their head if given a little power.

Some people also do not want to share their knowledge or teach others what they know, they feel threatened and think that the person they teach will try to take their job. They fail to realize that in order for them to be prompted, someone needs to be able to fill their position. If nobody can do what they can do, how can they do something else?

There is a good tv show (I seldom watch tv) called undercover boss. In it, the owner or CEO of a company goes undercover and in disguise as a low level employee within their organizations. To explain the cameras and film crews they have a cover story such as making a documentary about re entering the workforce.

They get to see things they are normally insulated from, and as you highlighted, things that middle management dictate are a disconnect from what the senior management dictate.

A chain is only as strong as its weakest link and it’s the same within organizations. When we don’t treat people well, they resent coming to work, perform beneath their potential, leave or get poached by other organizations who do recognize thier worth. It’s just a bad situation and unsustainable in the long term.

Great post my friend. I am sorry it has been taking me so long to read and comment on everybody’s posts. Hope your weekend is going well.
