"Who the fu&%!$ are the Guardians of the Galaxy?" was the first thing I thought when I saw the trailer and the announcement of this movie, I'm going to be honest, it's true that I like superheroes and comics but I'm not an avid reader of them, I've read just a few in my life, and if Iron Man, Hulk, Thor, and Captain America were relatively unknown characters by the time the Marvel Cinematic Universe took off, it was easy to understand why so few people knew about this group. So little was my interest in this movie that I ignored it at the time and well... Big mistake. Some time after its release I decided to see it and WHAT A MOVIE, it quickly positioned itself among my favorites of the MCU and to this day it still is, but.... Who the fu#&%$ are the Guardians of the Galaxy? First I'll give a brief overview of the history of this unique team and then I'll talk about the movie as such.
So without any further ado, let's start!
The Guardians of the Galaxy are a group of space superheroes of the Marvel Comics publishing house, their first publication was in January 1969 and were written by Arnold Drake and drawn by Gene Colan, but contrary to what you might think the Guardians were not very successful, so their individual publications were very inconsistent over the years, the greatest participation that the team had was in crossovers with heroes or more famous teams, such is the case of Thor or The Avengers. Another fact is that the team we know today thanks to the movies is the result of a reimagining of the comic book concept that took place in 2008 (the original 1969 team was composed by other characters), this reinterpretation of the Guardians was made with the intention of giving it a tone much more focused on humor and action and keep it away from "darker" stories, this was also the comic on which they were based to make the film adaptation.
Guardians of the Galaxy is the tenth film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, it was produced by Marvel Studios and distributed by Disney. It was directed by James Gunn and in the cast we have Chris Pratt as Peter Quill/Starlord, Zoe Saldaña as Gamora, Dave Bautista as Drax, the voice of Vin Diesel as Groot, the voice of Bradley Cooper as Rocket Racoon, Lee Pace as Ronan the Accuser (and antagonist of the film), Karen Gillian as Nebula, and Michael Rooker as Yondu Udonta. From what you can see it's quite a large cast and while researching about the film I learned that it is an "ensemble cast", meaning that all the characters have relatively equal importance throughout the production.
The film begins in 1988, showing us a boy listening to music in a hospital waiting room with a Walkman, this boy is Peter Quill and he is in the hospital due to his dying mother. A relative of Peter's brings him in front of his mother to say goodbye to her, and after exchanging a few words, she dies. The devastated boy runs out of the hospital and then is abducted by an alien spacecraft. 26 years later, on a distant and hostile planet called Morag, a lone outlaw lands who, again, turns out to be Peter Quill, and after a rather funny sequence that defines the general tone of the film, steals a sphere-shaped object found on the planet. Peter escapes but not without being intercepted by a group of fanatics of the Kree race led by Ronan the Accuser who were also in search of the object, so they follow him to the planet Xandar where Peter plans to sell it at a good price.
Once in Xandar Peter is intercepted by Gamora, one of the daughters of Thanos and who is also in search of the object, and to complicate things even more this pursuit is joined by Rocket and Groot, mercenaries who want to deliver Peter for the price of his head, however due to the fuss they made during the chase are intercepted by the Nova Corps and sent to prison. In prison they will meet Drax the Destroyer, who wants to kill Gamora due to her relationship with Ronan the Accuser and Thanos, since they were responsible for the death of his family, but after being dissuaded by Peter not to kill her, these particular characters join forces to escape from prison and eventually put aside their differences for the greater good.
Guardians of the Galaxy is a movie with soul, and what do I mean by that? Well let's see; in the first scene of the movie, the death of Peter Quill's mom, is a pretty sad moment that takes itself seriously enough, it is heartbreaking and quite easy to empathize with the character, however, the next scene completely changes the tone for a scene clearly made for laughs, with Peter Quill dancing and singing 80's music across a desolate planet. With this duality, the essence of the film is quite clear: we are going to see a comedy film with superheroes but that also knows when to take itself seriously and respect that seriousness.
I don't know about you, but I loved this because unlike, for example, The Avengers, the comedy was an add-on (sometimes left over) and not an essential part of the movie; in the case of Guardians of the Galaxy the comedy works perfectly because it knows it's a comedy movie and that it doesn't plan to take a human, two aliens, a humanoid tree and a talking raccoon seriously, and yet its script as well as the chemistry of the characters work so well that absolutely no situation and/or interaction feels forced or out of place. The cast is simply wonderful, there isn't a lead (or even supporting) character that is wasted, everyone is useful; everyone brings something to the plot or the team.
Something that caught my attention is that I felt that none of the main characters are developed throughout the film, and this could very well be a negative point; the thing is that these characters (with slight exceptions) don’t need to be developed because each and every one of them has already lived their journey, they all have clear convictions and personalities, so rather the development falls on how to make such a dysfunctional group of characters work as a team. And trust me, when I say they are dysfunctional, I mean it: Peter Quill is like a kind of Han Solo but much more immature; Gamora is a genetically altered warrior and daughter of Thanos the mad titan; Drax is an alien who comes from a planet where they don’t understand sarcasm and interpret everything literally; Rocket (my favorite character) is A RACOON and at the same time the biggest rascal in the galaxy, and Groot well... He’s a tree, A TREE! And each and every one of them is endearing and lovable. I think the least interesting character is Ronan (yes, the villain again), his motivation doesn't feel anything out of this world, his participation and dialogues are limited to the most basic of any villain in any other movie and well... That's it, there's practically nothing else to say about this character, he's just another second character that ends up being quite forgettable.
The film’s setting, the special effects, makeup, costumes, everything is amazing, at the production level Marvel didn't hold anything back. It is quite pleasant to watch because everything is very well done and thanks to this the film is really immersive, to the point of immersing us in the screen and believing that these characters are really in space, or that out there exists a whole universe living together in that way. The action seems to me to have a good dose, not too much but not too little, the choreographies of the fights work well although I would have liked a little more presence in this section. As I said before, this is a comedy movie with superheroes, so be prepared to laugh a lot, it is a movie made to enjoy and stop thinking for a few hours, although it has enough substance to tell a coherent story.
Of course I couldn't talk about the technical section without mentioning its spectacular soundtrack, which is full of both incredible original compositions and a mix of music from the 60s and 70s that according to the director's own words, was made with the intention of representing the earth as Peter Quill's home in order to feel a connection with him.
The combination of all these elements is what makes Guardians of the Galaxy a film with a soul, a film different from what we have been used to in the MCU and that to some extent feels like a "separate" product from the rest of the films but at the same time broadens even more the possibilities and the scale of this universe, this time taking it to space travel. It’s also in this installment where we get a closer look at the main antagonist that all the characters we have been meeting will have to face sooner or later: Thanos, and now with the presence of three infinity stones it’s more than obvious where all this is headed: Infinity War, but well, let's not get ahead of ourselves. Guardians of the Galaxy is fun to watch, at no time makes us lose interest or becomes heavy, on the contrary the film runs super fast and never stops, it is a comedy that knows when to take itself seriously but doesn’t hesitate to ridicule (in a good way) its characters, and it is they who are responsible for carrying this film on the shoulder with all the mistakes it has, their characters make this movie what it is and I'm sure that with a different cast, the result wouldn’t have been nearly the same. More than a team this group feels like a family, a bunch of misfits that had the fortune to find each other and form the family they never had, and this is without a doubt (for me) the best and what I enjoy the most about this movie.

“¿Quién cara#&%!$ son Los Guardianes de la Galaxia?” Fue lo primero que pensé cuándo vi el tráiler y el anuncio de esta película, les voy a ser sincero, es verdad que me gustan los superhéroes y los comics pero no soy un lector acérrimo de estos, he leído a penas unos cuantos en toda mi vida, y si ya Iron Man, Hulk, Thor, y el Capitán América eran personajes relativamente desconocidos para el momento en el que despegó el Universo Cinematográfico de Marvel, era sencillo entender porque tan poca gente conocía a este grupo. Tan poco fue mi interés en esta película que en su momento prescindí de ella y pues… Grave error. Un tiempo después de su estreno decidí verla y VAYA PELÍCULA, rápidamente se posicionó entre mis favoritas del UCM y al día de hoy lo sigue siendo, pero... ¿Quién cara#&%!$ son Los Guardianes de la Galaxia? Primero haré un breve repaso de la historia de este singular equipo y luego hablaré de la película como tal.
Así que sin más preámbulos, ¡comencemos!
Los Guardianes de la Galaxia son un grupo de superhéroes espaciales de la editorial Marvel Comics, su primera publicación fue en enero de 1969 y fueron escritos por Arnold Drake y dibujados por Gene Colan, pero al contrario de lo que se pueda pensar los Guardianes no tuvieron mucho éxito, por lo que sus publicaciones individuales fueron muy inconstantes a lo largo de los años, la mayor participación que tenía el equipo era en crossovers con héroes o equipos más famosos, tal es el caso de Thor o Los Vengadores. Otro hecho es que el equipo que conocemos hoy en día gracias a las películas es el resultado de una reimaginación del concepto del comic que tuvo lugar en el 2008 (el equipo original de 1969 estaba compuesto por otros personajes), esta reinterpretación de los Guardianes fue hecha con la intención de darle un tono mucho más enfocado al humor y la acción y a alejarse de historias más “oscuras”, y además fue este el comic en el que se basaron para hacer la adaptación al cine.
Guardianes de la Galaxia es la décima película del Universo Cinematográfico de Marvel, fue producida por Marvel Studios y distribuida por Disney. Fue dirigida por James Gunn y en el reparto tenemos a Chris Pratt como Peter Quill/Starlord, Zoe Saldaña como Gamora, Dave Bautista como Drax, la voz de Vin Diesel como Groot, la voz de Bradley Cooper como Rocket Racoon, Lee Pace como Ronan el Acusador (y antagonista de la película), Karen Gillian como Nebula, y Michael Rooker como Yondu Udonta. Por lo que pueden ver es un cast bastante grande y mientras investigaba acerca de la película me enteré que se trata de un “reparto coral”, lo que significa que todos los personajes tienen una importancia relativamente equitativa a lo largo de la producción.
La película comienza en el año 1988, mostrándonos a un niño que escucha música en la sala de espera de un hospital con un Walkman, este niño es Peter Quill y está en el hospital debido a que su mamá se encuentra moribunda. Un familiar de Peter lo lleva frente a su mamá para que se despida de ella, y luego de intercambiar algunas palabras, ella muere. El devastado niño sale corriendo del hospital y al salir, una nave alienígena lo abduce. 26 años después, en un planeta lejano y hostil llamado Morag, aterriza un solitario forajido que, de nuevo, resulta ser Peter Quill, y luego de una secuencia bastante graciosa que define el tono general que mantendrá la película, este roba un objeto en forma de esfera que se encuentra en dicho planeta. Peter escapa pero no sin ser interceptado por un grupo de fanáticos de la raza Kree liderados por Ronan el Acusador y que también estaban en búsqueda del objeto, por lo que lo siguen hasta el planeta Xandar donde Peter piensa venderlo a un buen precio.
Una vez en Xandar Peter es interceptado por Gamora, una de las hijas de Thanos y quién también está en busca del objeto, y para complicar más aún las cosas a esta persecución se unen Rocket y Groot, unos mercenarios que quieren entregar a Peter por el precio que tiene su cabeza, sin embargo debido al alboroto que hicieron durante la persecución son interceptados por los Nova Corps y enviados a prisión. En prisión conocerán a Drax el Destructor, quién quiere matar a Gamora por su relación con Ronan el Acusador y con Thanos, ya que estos fueron los responsables de la muerte de su familia, pero luego de ser disuadido por Peter de no matarla, estos particulares personajes unen fuerzas para escapar de la prisión y eventualmente dejar a un lado sus diferencias en pro de un bien mayor.
Guardianes de la Galaxia es una película con alma, ¿y a que me refiero con esto? Pues veamos; en la primera escena de la película, la muerte de la mamá de Peter Quill, es un momento bastante triste que se toma lo suficientemente en serio a sí mismo, es desgarrador y bastante fácil de empatizar con el personaje, sin embargo, la siguiente escena cambia completamente el tono por un escena claramente hecha para reír, con Peter Quill bailando y cantando música de los 80 a través de un planeta desolado. Con esta dualidad queda bastante marcada la esencia de la película: vamos a ver una película de comedia con superhéroes pero que también sabe cuándo tomarse en serio a sí misma y respetar esa seriedad.
No sé ustedes, pero a mí esto me encantó porque a diferencia de, por ejemplo, Los Vengadores, la comedia era un agregado (a veces sobrante) y no una parte esencial de la película; en el caso de Guardianes de la Galaxia la comedia funciona perfectamente porque sabe que es una película de comedia y que no planea tomarse en serio a un humano, dos alienígenas, un árbol humanoide y un mapache que habla, y sin embargo su guión así como la química de los personajes funcionan tan bien que absolutamente ninguna situación y/o interacción se siente forzada o fuera de lugar. El elenco es simplemente maravilloso, no hay un personaje protagónico (y hasta secundario) que esté desaprovechado, todos son útiles, todos aportan algo a la trama o al equipo.
Algo que me llamó la atención es que sentí que ninguno de los protagonistas se desarrolla a lo largo de la película, y esto perfectamente podría ser un punto negativo; la cuestión es que estos personajes (con leves excepciones) no necesitan ser desarrollados porque ya todos y cada uno de ellos vivió su viaje, todos tienen claras sus convicciones y personalidades, por lo que más bien el desarrollo cae en cómo hacer que un grupo de personajes tan disfuncionales trabaje en equipo. Y es que de verdad, cuándo digo que son disfuncionales, lo digo en serio: Peter Quill es como una especie de Han Solo pero mucho más inmaduro; Gamora es una guerrera alterada genéticamente e hija de Thanos el titán loco; Drax es un alienígena que viene de un planeta donde no entienden el sarcasmo y que interpretan todo literalmente; Rocket (mi personaje favorito) es UN MAPACHE y al mismo tiempo el bribón más grande de toda la galaxia, y Groot pues… Es un árbol, ¡UN ÁRBOL! Y todos y cada uno de ellos son entrañables y queribles. Creo que el personaje menos interesante es Ronan (si, de nuevo el villano) porque su motivación no se siente nada fuera del otro mundo, su participación y sus diálogos se limitan a lo más básico de cualquier villano de cualquier otra película y pues… Eso es todo, no hay prácticamente nada más que decir respecto a este personaje, solo es un segundón más que termina siendo bastante olvidable.
El setting de la película, los efectos especiales, el maquillaje, el vestuario, todo es asombroso, a nivel de producción Marvel no se guardó absolutamente nada. Es bastante agradable de ver pues todo está muy bien logrado y gracias a esto la película resulta realmente inmersiva, al punto de sumergirnos en la pantalla y creer que estos personajes de verdad están en el espacio, o que allá fuera hay todo un universo conviviendo de esa manera. La acción me parece que tiene una buena dosis, no es demasiada pero tampoco es poca, las coreografías de lo combates funcionan bien aunque me hubiese gustado un poco más de presencia en este apartado. Como dije anteriormente, esta es una película de comedia con superhéroes, por lo que prepárense para reírse a montones, es una película hecha para disfrutar y dejar de pensar por unas horas, aunque tiene la sustancia suficiente como para contar una historia coherente.
Por supuesto no podía hablar del apartado técnico sin mencionar su espectacular banda sonora, que está llena tanto de increíbles composiciones originales como de un mix de música de los años 60 y 70 que según palabras del propio director, se hizo con la intención de representar la tierra como el hogar de Peter Quill para sentir una conexión con él.
La combinación de todos estos elementos es lo que hacen de Guardianes de la Galaxia una película con alma, un film distinto de lo que veníamos acostumbrados en el UCM y que en cierta medida se siente como un producto “separado” del resto de películas pero que al mismo tiempo amplia aún más las posibilidades y la escala de este universo, esta vez llevándolo a los viajes en el espacio. Es también en esta entrega donde podemos darle un vistazo más de cerca al antagonista principal que todos los personajes que hemos ido conociendo tendrán que enfrentar tarde o temprano: Thanos, y ahora con la presencia de tres gemas del infinito es más que obvio hacía donde se dirige todo esto: Infinity War, pero bueno, no nos adelantemos a los hechos. Guardianes de la Galaxia es divertida de ver, en ningún momento nos hace perder el interés ni se hace pesada, por el contrario la película transcurre súper rápido y no se detiene nunca, es una comedia que sabe cuándo tomarse en serio a sí misma pero que tampoco duda en ridiculizar (de buena manera) a sus personajes, y es que son ellos quienes se encargan de llevar en el hombro a esta película con todo y los errores que tiene, sus personajes hacen que esta película sea lo que es y estoy seguro que con un cast distinto, el resultado no hubiese sido ni de cerca el mismo. Más que un equipo este grupo se siente como una familia, un montón de inadaptados que tuvo la fortuna de encontrarse y formar la familia que nunca tuvieron, y esto sin duda es (para mí) lo mejor y lo que más disfruto de esta película.

La primera Guardians es importantísima para el MCU, siento que sin ella no hubiese llegado tan lejos, era un despliegue de creatividad e integridad artística que al menos hasta ese momento no se había visto en ese universo cinematográfico... Dista de ser perfecta y su estructura es ligeramente formulaíca, pero demostró que Marvel podía hacer funcionar casi cualquier cosa.
Sí, estoy de acuerdo con la importancia que tiene en el UCM, principalmente por el hecho de llevar al universo a una escala espacial, es una antesala perfecta para que todo el conflicto con Thanos se sienta coherente sin demasiadas explicaciones.

I was delighted when I saw it. Gunn did an excellent job, with characters that were known mostly to geeks, the more intense comic book readers, the general public was completely unfamiliar with Guardians of the Galaxy. Gunn's style with its touch of humor had a great influence on the tone and success of the film. Plus, the cast is great.
And even for the Marvel hard dying comic fans, using these characters were kind of a surprise, a pleasent one fortunately. Gunn's work with this one is so good that it makes want to watch the reboot from the Suicide Squad directe by him, considering that I couldn't stand the original Suicide Squad.
Personalmente disfrute mucho mas de la segunda película, pero hay que admitir que el primer filme fue un paso muy acertado por parte de Marvel para la que fue en su momento la siguiente fase del MCU.
Curioso, yo siento que esta fue infinitamente superior al volumen 2. Ojo, no quiero decir que aquella sea mala, de hecho también me gusta bastante, pero para mí el volumen 1 está entre el top 3 del UCM.
Marvel really did a great job with this one, I remember not having any expectations about this film and ultimately loving it due to how fun it was. They aren't my favorite superheroes but these characters can certainly provide entertainment.
I think expectations were low for almost anybody, maybe we were judging the book by its cover. I still think about this movie as a risky one tho, and I gotta say Marvel and James Gunn did an amazing job to make this work. Spider-man's my favorite superhero, but these guys are a blast 😂😂😂
