Hello everyone! Today I bring you a new movie review. This time we will be talking about Midsommar, a movie, which will certainly leave something else to think about tonight. Midsommar is a film from director Ari Aster and was released in 2019. It was perhaps an expected film given that the director is the same creator of Hereditary, a rather controversial film that left many hoping for more productions from this director. So it is not a surprise that Midsommar was received with such good appreciation and a few other rejections by the public and critics. Midsommar starred Florence Pugh as Dani and Jack Reynor as Christian.

Midsommar es una película del director Ari Aster y que fue estrenada el año 2019. Era quizás un film esperado dado que el director es el mismo creador de Hereditary, una película bastante controversial que dejó a muchos esperando más producciones por parte de este director. Por lo que no es una sorpresa que Midsommar fuera recibido con tan buen aprecio y unos que otros rechazos por el público y la crítica. Midsommar fue protagonizado por Florence Pugh como Dani y Jack Reynor como Christian.

The film opens with a shot showing a type of tableau (a delicately painted panel used in the Byzantine century to depict religious devotion) that tells a somewhat confusing story, accompanied by a sweet chant. Then we are presented with several shots where we see some people sleeping and how an answering machine picks up a voice call. Then Dani appears, who is the person behind the call, and a young woman who is worried about her sister (who seems to suffer from anxiety) because she is not answering her messages. Dani calls her boyfriend, Christian, having no one else to turn to about her concerns and he seems not very interested in hearing about it. Instead, we can later see in another shot that he is gathered with his friends in an informal meeting.
It is not until we are taken back to the first house, where Dani's parents and sister reside, that we realize that they have all died of asphyxiation. Dani's sister has decided to end her life and that of her parents. Dani has found out and we see her crying and screaming in pain along with Christian, who came to see her.
In another scene, after the death of Dani's family, Dani and Christian attend a meeting with Dani's friends. There we learn that her boyfriend was planning to go on a trip to Sweden with his friends to be present at the Midsommar celebration. Dani didn't know about this and confronts Christian. He claims not to have decided anything yet, but she insists, considering that he had already bought the ticket. Christian wants to go home, Dani stops him and decides to forget this for the sake of the relationship.

La película comienza con un plano dónde se nos muestra un tipo de retablo (una tabla delicadamente pintada, utilizada en el siglo Bizantino para mostrar devoción religiosa) que relata una historia un poco confusa, acompañada de un dulce canto. Luego nos presentan varios planos dónde se ven algunas personas durmiendo y como una contestadora recoge una llamada de voz. Después aparece Dani, quién es la persona detrás de esa llamada y una joven que está preocupada por su hermana (quién parece sufrir de ansiedad) ya que no contesta sus mensajes. Dani llama a su novio, Christian, no teniendo alguien más a quien recurrir para contarle su preocupación y este parece no estar muy interesado en oír sobre ello. En cambio, podemos ver luego en otro plano que este se encuentra reunido con sus amigos en una reunión informal.
No es hasta que de nuevo nos llevan a la primera casa, donde residen los padres y hermana de Dani, cuando caemos en cuenta que todos ellos han muerto por asfixia. La hermana de Dani ha decidido acabar con su vida y la de sus padres. Dani se ha enterado y la vemos llorar y gritar de dolor junto con Christian, quién acudió a verla.
En otra escena, luego de la muerte de la familia de Dani,Dani y Christian asisten a una reunión con los amigos de este último. Ahí nos enteramos de que el novio de ella planeaba irse de viaje a Suecia con sus amigos para estar presentes en la celebración del Midsommar. Dani no sabía sobre esto y enfrenta a Christian. Este alega no haber decidido nada aún pero ella insiste tomando en cuenta que él ya había comprado el boleto. Christian quiere irse a casa, Dani lo detiene y decide olvidar esto por el bien de la relación.
At the house of one of Christian's friends, we learn that Christian asked Dani to accompany them on the trip. The friends, not quite in agreement, give in to this. It seems to be Christian's decision so that she would not be alone during her family's mourning. Dani arrives at the meeting and starts a conversation with Pelle, a young student friend of Christian's who is the one who invites his friends to travel to Harga, where he is from. We can notice great empathy and support from Pelle to Dani as he consoles her for the death of her family but, upon hearing about it, Dani runs to the bathroom.
There she tries to stifle a cry and quickly transitions from the bathroom to the bathroom of an airplane. They have arrived in Sweden. They travel a few kilometers and before arriving we see a general map where the landscape of Sweden is not shown and how it takes a 180° turn. A hasty wink that hints that the world of these young people is about to change.
They reach a meadow. There Pelle greets some acquaintances and this month offers the boys some narcotics. Dani doesn't want to but gives in for Christian. Quickly we see how everyone is falling into their own trip and how we too notice that the grass, the coats and flowers start to distort. Once again, Dani is told that she is welcome, this is her family and she runs to a stable. There she wants to scream out of mourning and we see through the mirror Dani's sister. She runs out of there in fear and falls asleep.
En casa de uno de los amigos de Christian, nos enteramos de que Christian le pidió a Dani que los acompañará al viaje. Los amigos no muy de acuerdo, ceden a esto. Al parecer una decisión de Christian para que está no estuviera sola durante el luto de la familia de ella. Llega Dani a la reunión y comienza una conversación con Pelle, un joven estudiante amigo de Christian quién es quién hace la invitación a sus amigos para viajar hasta Harga, de dónde es oriundo. Podemos notar gran empatía y apoyo de Pelle a Dani al consolarla por la muerte su familia pero, Dani al escuchar sobre ello corre al baño.
Allí trata de ahogar un llanto y rápidamente sucede una transición del cuarto de baño al baño de un avión. Han llegado a Suecia. Recorren algunos kilómetros y antes de llegar observamos un plano general dónde se no enseña el paisaje de Suecia y como este da un giro de 180°. Un guiño apresurado que nos insinúa que el mundo de estos jóvenes va a cambiar.
Llegan hasta un prado. Allí Pelle saluda algunos conocidos y este mes ofrece a los chicos algunos estupefacientes. Dani no quiere pero cede por Christian. Rápidamente vemos como cada uno va cayendo en su propio viaje y como nosotros también al notar que el césped, los abriles y flores empiezan a distorsionarse. Una vez más, a Dani le hacen mención de que es una bienvenida, está es su familia y corre hacia un establo. Allí quiere gritar por el luto y vemos a través del espejo a la hermana de Dani. Sale de allí con miedo y cae dormida.
It is late at night but the sun is still up. Dani wakes up and the fellow travelers wake her up to tell her that they must continue on to Harga. Walking through the same meadow full of bushes and flowers that guide the way, the boys arrive in Harga.
They are greeted by one of the locals and then share some impressions. They have arrived just in time for the beginning of the nine-day celebration. They each inspect the place in their own way and meet another couple who have come to get to know the place.... Here we learn that Dani is having a birthday but only Pelle remembered the festivity. He presents Dani with a portrait (Pelle is a cartoonist) and she is saddened.
One of the most interesting shots is when we are shown "A Love Story". A series of paintings that tell the story of a young woman who bewitches the man she loves so that he falls at her feet. Again, here we are given an idea of what can happen. The place is picturesque; everyone wears white clothes with colorful decorations on them, dances happily to the sound of singing, shares various duties and everyone is cooperative, friendly and seems to have no bad intentions.
Es tarde por la noche pero el sol sigue arriba. Dani despierta y los compañeros de viaje la despiertan para decirle que deben seguir hasta Harga. Caminando a través del mismo prado lleno de arbustos y flores que guían el camino, los chicos llegan a Harga.
Son recibidos por uno de los lugareños y luego comparte algunas impresiones. Han llegado justo para el comienzo de la celebración que dura 9 nueve dias. Cada uno inspecciona el lugar a su manera y conocen a otra pareja que ha venido a conocer el lugar... Aquí nos enteramos de que Dani está cumpliendo años pero solo Pelle recordó la festividad. Le obsequia a Dani un retrato (Pelle es dibujante) y está se siente apenada.
Uno de los planos más interesantes es cuando nos enseñan "Una historia de Amor". Una serie de pinturas que relatan la historia de una joven que hechizada al hombre que ama para que esté caiga a sus pies. De nuevo, aquí nos dan una idea sobre lo que puede suceder. El lugar es pintoresco; todos usan vestimenta blanca con decoraciones coloridas en ellas, danzan alegremente al son de los canto, comparten deberes varios y todos colaboran, son amables y parecen no tener malas intenciones.
Everything changes when the next day, during a ceremony, two of the oldest elders of the community fall off a cliff and die. All the strangers are shocked. Dani wants to leave and notices that the couple who arrived with them also want to leave. To her surprise Christian and his friends do not want to. Christian claims that there is no reason, he wants to do his anthropology thesis on this place. Something that annoys one of his friends since he had been the first to have this proposal. At the same time, we see how a strange redhead of the place seems to try to bewitch Christian. Night comes and Dani has a horrible nightmare where everyone leaves them.
Another new day and we can see that the place seems less and less peaceful than we thought. The traveling couple has disappeared and Dani finds this very strange, it seems that the girl's boyfriend has left but she doesn't believe it and leaves on her own without help from the villagers. Dani mentions this to her partner but he is absorbed in his thoughts.
Dani decides to help the local women prepare lunch and we see her very comfortable. Now two of Christian's friends are having trouble in the community. One of them has combed his hair on a sacred tree and is tempted by a girl to go out during dinner. Then another of them, the guy working on the thesis for the place, is killed for trying to steal information about the community.
Todo cambia cuando al día siguiente, durante una ceremonia, dos de los ancianos más longevos de la comunidad se arrojan hacia un precipicio y mueren. Todos los extranjeros quedan consternados. Dani quiere irse y observa que la pareja que llegó con ellos también quiere lo mismo. Para su sorpresa Christian y sus amigos no quieren. Christian alega que no hay por qué, él quiere hacer su tesis de antropología sobre este lugar. Cosa que molesta a uno de sus amigos puesto que el había sido el primero en tener esta propuesta. Al unísono, vemos como una extraña pelirroja del lugar parece intentar hechizar a Christian. Llega la noche y Dani tiene una horrible pesadilla dónde todos los abandonan.
Otra vez un nuevo día y podemos ver qué cada vez más el lugar parece menos pacífico de lo que se pensaba. La pareja de viajeros han desaparecido y Dani encuentra esto muy extraño, tal parece que el novio de la chica se fue pero está no lo cree y se marcha por su cuenta sin ayuda de los aldeanos. Dani le menciona esto a su pareja pero este está absorto en sus ideas.
Dani decide ayudar a las mujeres del lugar a preparar el almuerzo y la vemos muy cómoda. Ahora dos de los amigos de Christian están teniendo problemas en la comunidad. Uno de ellos se ha peinado en un árbol sagrado y es tentado por una chica a salir durante la cena. Luego, otro de ellos, el chico que trabaja en la tesis del lugar, es asesinado por intentar robar información sobre la comunidad.
Only Christian and Dani are left. The May Queen dance is held, a competition where the last woman standing will be crowned. Christian sits down with one of the leading women and she tells him that Mya is interested in him. He tells her that he thinks she bewitched him and leaves. He then sits down to watch the competition and consumes a drink offered by one of the women.
Dani finally wins the coronation as the May Queen and all the villagers are happy about it. They shower her with flowers and she's apparently the one who rules things now. She's blessing the crops and such, only to realize that Christian is having sex with Mya in some sort of strange ritual surrounded by women. She cries and is completely torn apart but, she is not alone, the women around her accompany her in her pain and suffer together.
Christian is taken hostage after escaping and discovering that several of the tourists have been killed. At this point we can realize the truth during a ceremony where it is judged who will be taken as the next offering and it is revealed that the 4 murdered tourists were part of it. The other two, 6 and 7, are volunteers from the community. Dani, as the May Queen and now part of the community, must decide whether to take Christian's life or that of one of the locals. Dani decides to offer Christian.
Solo queda Christian y Dani. Se realiza el baile de la Reina de Mayo, una competencia dónde la última mujer que quede de pie será coronada. Christian se senta con una de las mujeres de mayor liderazgo y está le dice que Mya está interesada en él. Este le dice que cree que ella lo hechizó y se retira. Luego se sienta a ver la competencia y consume una bebida ofrecida por una de las mujeres.
Dani gana finalmente la coronación como la Reina de Mayo y todos los aldeanos están felices por ella. La llenan de flores y es ella al parecer quien rige las cosas ahora. Está bendicen los cultivos y demás, para luego darse cuenta de que Christian se encuentra teniendo relaciones con Mya en una especie de extraño ritual rodeado de mujeres. Llora y se desgarra completamente pero, no está sola, las mujeres alrededor de ella la acompañan en su dolor y sufren juntas.
Christian es tomado como rehén luego de escapar y descubrir que varios de los turistas han sido asesinados. A este punto podemos darnos cuenta de la verdad durante una ceremonia donde se juzga quién será tomado como la próxima ofrenda y se revela que los 4 turistas asesinados eran parte de ellos. Los otros dos, el 6 y el 7, son voluntarios de la comunidad. Dani, como la Reina de Mayo y ahora parte de la comunidad, debe decidir si toma la vida de Christian o la de uno de los lugareños. Dani decide ofrecer a Christian.
The 9 tributes are taken to a triangular shaped hut and are gathered in a rune-like arrangement. Christian was introduced into the body of a large bear that represents all the evil and sins of the villagers. They are quickly set on fire and the wailing of some of those left alive is heard.
The whole community begins to writhe, run and scream wildly all over the place. But the most unforgettable scene is when in a close-up we are shown Dani who watches closely as the hut burns and how little by little a smile is planted on his face. For the first time we see how Dani seems to be calm, happy and pleased with what has happened. She has given up pain forever and now has a new family to be happy with.
Los 9 tributos son llevado a una cabaña con forma triangular y son reunidos en una disposición parecida a una runa. Christian fue introducido en el cuerpo de un gran oso que representa todo el mal y los pecados de los lugareños. Rápidamente son prendidos en fuego y se oyen los lamentos de algunos que quedaban con vida.
Toda la comunidad empieza a retorcerse, correr y gritar desenfrenadamente por todo el lugar. Pero la escena más inolvidable es cuando en un primer plano se nos enseña a Dani quién observa con detenimiento como arde la cabaña y como poco a poco se planta una sonrisa en su rostro. Por primera vez vemos como Dani parece estar en calma, feliz y complacida con lo sucedido. Ha renunciado al dolor para siempre y ahora tiene una nueva familia con la quien ser feliz.
Last details
Midsommar is undoubtedly one of the best psychological thrillers of 2019. The film is full of symbolism that goes from the names of the characters, the objects of the place, the locals, the setting and of course the place itself. Everything has a correlation and nothing is done at random, so we are shown that more than once we were given a "hint" about what was going to happen there.
The "Love story" shown in the beginning was taking place with Mya and Christian, where she bewitches Christian through food and introducing runes under his bed. It was determined that Christian would be the procreator of a new member of the community through Mya.
Pelle chose carefully who would be the participants of this ceremony and from the beginning we see a special treatment towards Dani. He seemed to be the only one who really cared about her. She knew well that the other boys would fall for her impertinence at any moment.
Dani was purposely chosen. With no family and no one to attach herself to, she would undoubtedly be the perfect candidate to join the community. An insecure, wounded and fragile person who is a perfect fit to be influenced. She had nothing to lose and I can consider that she is happier now than she was before.
There are many, many secrets behind this film that I would like to touch on in more depth but, in view of how long the post has become I consider that this conversation can take place for a video.
Midsommar is actually a real holiday but it served as an example to tell a story about the dysfunction between Dani and Christian, the horror through the pagan customs of the locals, the eternal sunny day and a Final Girl, which I think is the most appropriate title to close this. Midsommar sin duda alguna es una de los mejores Thriller psicológicos del 2019. La película está llena de simbolismos que va desde los nombres de los personajes, los objetos del lugar, los lugareños, la ambientación y por supuesto el lugar en sí mismo. Todo tiene una correlación y nada está hecho al azar, así nos demuestran que más de una vez se nos dió una "pista" sobre lo que allí iba a suceder.
"La historia de Amor" mostrada en un inicio fue tomando lugar con Mya y Christian, dónde está hechiza a Christian a través de la comida e introduciendo runas debajo de su cama. Estaba determinado que Christian sería el procreador de un nuevo miembro de la comunidad a través de Mya.
Pelle escogió con detenimiento quienes serían los participantes de esta ceremonia y desde el inicio vemos un especial trato hacía Dani. Quién parecía ser el único que se preocupaba realmente por ella. Sabía bien que los demás chicos por sus impertinencia caerían en cualquier momento.
Dani fue elegida adrede. Sin familia y sin nadie a quien atarse, ella sin duda sería la candidata perfecta para unirse a la comunidad. Una persona insegura, herida y frágil que encaja perfecto para poder ser influenciada. No tenía nada que perder y puedo considerar que ella ahora es más feliz que antes.
Hay muchísimos secretos detrás de esta película que me gustaría tocar más a fondo pero, en vista de lo largo que se ha hecho la publicación considero que esta conversación puede tomar lugar para un vídeo.
El Midsommar es en realidad una festividad real pero que sirvió cómo ejemplo para contar una historia acerca de la disfunción entre Dani y Christian, el horror a través de las costumbres paganas de los lugareños, el eterno día soleado y un Final Girl, que considero es el título más apropiado para cerrar esto. Las películas bajo el subgénero de terror Folk Horror están dado de que hablar y ya es muy normal ver a muchas personas viendo este tipo de películas que parecieran algo lentas y sin sentido, pero la verdad es que tienen tanto cuerpo a nivel conceptual que es una maravilla.
Creo que la primera película que vi de este subgénero sin saberlo fue The Wicker Man del 2006 una gran película con un nivel de misterio que no es para espectadores que estén muy pendientes de cell mientras ven una película. Hace unos meses de recomendé a un amigo Midsommar y quedo impactado nunca había visto nada por el estilo me contaba que desde el minuto 20 estaba algo incomodo no sabio hacia donde se dirigía la trama y cuando todo empezó a tener forma le exploto la cabeza.
Me encanto la idea principal de una tribu o lugareños con una tradición de sacrificó (No Real o Real) que mezclado con misticismo hacen que sea una locura y cada personaje, aunque de formas disparejas y sin mucha importancia fuera de los principales son parte de todo esto. Lo que realmente funciona aquí fuera de lo que ya has mencionado es que el espectador sienta que esto puede pasar en algún lugar oculto del planeta lo cual le da ese toque alucinante y perturbador lo cual es gracias al desconocimiento de lo que es o no real.
Veo que te gusto mucho y me gustaría recomendarte esta película llamada El ritual el contexto es diferente, pero esta cargada de momentos donde la tensión y el suspenso despiertan la curiosidad por lo que está por suceder eso si tienes que verla con la mente abierta y no le des mucha importancia a situaciones muy sacada de la manga.

¡Saludos por acá! Concuerdo con varias de las cosas que dices. Creo que en estos últimos años, este tipo de películas han tenido más relevancia y de ellas han salido otros títulos bastante buenos. También se ha hecho más accesible la posibilidad de adquirirlas por lo que es más probable encontrar más personas interesadas.
Ahora, tienes razón en que la película puede no gustar a todos por la forma en que avanza. Dos horas y media de película, en realidad no es mucho, creo que lo que atormenta a algunos es el hecho de que hay muchos momentos de reposo que parecen no ser importantes pero lo son. Te pierdes un detalle y ya has perdido el hilo de todo. Creo que fue muy orgánica la forma en que se desenvolvieron los hechos.
No he visto muchos títulos actuales, me he concentrado más en una lista interminable que tengo de varios directores. Ahora estoy con Robert Eggers y la verdad es que me ha dejado fascinada. Voy a pillar la The Wicker Man y la de El Ritual que mencionas.

Oye genial (Robert Eggers) tiene buenas películas yo me he visto de este director El Faro, La Bruja y El Hombre del Norte una genialidad cada una de pana sabe hacer buen cine.
Si desde luego y nada mientras exista un publico que consuma este tipo de películas siempre habla alguien que las este produciendo además existe una cantidad enorme de este tipo que no alcanza el tiempo.

Yo no suelo ver muchas películas del género de horror, incluyendo a las de horror psicológico, precisamente por la clase de cosas que me inspiro esta película al momento de verla. Cierto es que esta película no llega a ser muy explicita (al menos hasta que nos acercamos al final), pero aun con eso el ambiente, y por sobre todo el sentimiento que suele inspirar es tétrico e inusual, sabes que algo no anda bien pese a que no muestran nada y conforme avanza la película ese sentimiento se intensifica.
Como dije las películas de horror, no son mi fuerte, pero definitivamente esta es una de mis favoritas y de las que más miedo me ha inspirado.
