Hay actores con los cuales uno creció y vio en la pantalla desde siempre, uno de ellos es sin dudas Jean-Claude Van Damme. Un tipo que en su juventud era de los más ágiles actores que había en Hollywood y que nos acostumbró a películas en donde todo se resolvía a golpes. Quién no recuerda la mítica "Bloodsport" en donde lo vimos competir en aquel famoso Kumite por el honor de su maestro; creo que es de los films que uno podría ver una y otra vez. Es por todo esto que al ver que Van Damme tenía una película nueva era justo y necesario echarle un ojo bien sea por un tema nostálgico y/o por mera curiosidad. Obviamente no lo veremos en esa faceta atlética pero siempre es cool ver a estas leyendas una vez más.
There are actors with whom one grew up and saw on the screen forever, one of them is undoubtedly Jean-Claude Van Damme. A guy who in his youth was one of the most agile actors in Hollywood and who accustomed us to movies where everything was solved with blows. Who doesn't remember the mythical “Bloodsport” where we saw him compete in that famous Kumite for the honor of his master; I think it's one of those films that one could watch over and over again. That's why seeing that Van Damme had a new movie it was fair and necessary to take a look at it, either for nostalgic reasons or just out of curiosity. Obviously we won't see him in that athletic facet but it's always cool to see these legends once again.
Esta es la historia de Russell Hatch (Van Damme), un agente de la Interpol que está pagando el precio de no haber sido capaz de cumplir una promesa. Años atrás en una redada en la ciudad de Miami, la cual salió completamente mal, uno de sus informantes muere después de haberle asegurado que nada le pasaría. Esta carga aún lo atormenta en el presente por lo que buscó refugio en el alcohol. Él trata de mantenerse alejado del peligro lo más que puede básicamente porque está cuidando a Jayden, al hijo de su informante, esto es una deuda que adquirió con esta persona. La cosa es que muchas veces del pasado es muy complicado escapar por lo que eventualmente te termina dando caza.
This is the story of Russell Hatch (Van Damme), an Interpol agent who is paying the price for not being able to keep a promise. Years ago in a raid in the city of Miami, which went completely wrong, one of his informants dies after having assured him that nothing would happen to him. This burden still haunts him in the present so he sought refuge in alcohol. He tries to stay away from danger as much as he can basically because he is taking care of Jayden, the son of his informant, this is a debt he acquired with this person. The thing is that many times the past is very difficult to escape from, so eventually it ends up hunting you down.
Viviendo en Los Ángeles, más específicamente cerca de Koreatown, hay un resurgir de aquellas mafias que causaron tanto revuelo en Miami, de ahí a cuando les digo que el pasado parece que no quiere despegarse de Hatch. La lucha territorial es fuerte, una en la que el joven Jayden queda en el medio. Esto obliga a Hatch a retomar sus viejas tácticas por dos razones: para resguardar al adolescente y para vengar a su informante, quien además fue una persona muy importante para Russell. A partir de acá veremos como va transcurriendo esta trama y cómo se van atando cabos hasta llegar al fondo de todo y acabar o resolver este flagelo de una vez por todas. No se porque pero esta película tiene algo que me pareció interesante y es que parece un videojuego, supongo que es por la forma en como es contada la historia.
Living in Los Angeles, more specifically near Koreatown, there is a resurgence of those mafias that caused such a stir in Miami, hence when I tell you that the past doesn't seem to want to leave Hatch. The turf war is fierce, one in which young Jayden is caught in the middle. This forces Hatch to go back to his old tactics for two reasons: to protect the teenager and to avenge his informant, who was also a very important person for Russell. From here on we will see how this plot unfolds and how they are tying up ends until they get to the bottom of everything and end or solve this scourge once and for all. I don't know why but this movie has something that I found interesting and it seems like a video game, I guess it's because of the way the story is told.
Constantemente escuchamos la voz en off de Hatch relatar por lo que está pasando, lo que piensa, lo que va hacer, reflexiones, etc. Este es un recurso que me gusta mucho porque le da un toque distinto a la forma en como percibimos la historia, es como que siempre estamos en la mente del protagonista. La trama en si es simple, no es algo que no hayamos visto antes pero a pesar de eso, por lo menos a mi, no me pareció aburrida. Tiene un par de plot twist interesantes, me gustó la ambientación, todo muy oscuro, pesado; no se, a pesar de ser una película muy palomera o cotufera para pasar el rato está más que bien.
We constantly hear Hatch's voice-over narrate what he is going through, what he is thinking, what he is going to do, reflections, etc. This is a resource that I really like because it gives a different touch to the way we perceive the story, it's like we are always in the protagonist's mind. The plot itself is simple, it's not something we haven't seen before but despite that, at least to me, I didn't find it boring. It has a couple of interesting plot twists, I liked the setting, everything is very dark, heavy; I don't know, despite being a very popcorn movie to pass the time it's more than fine.
Jean-Claude Van Damme tiene 63 años, es lógico que no lo vamos a ver en ninguna escena haciendo más de lo que puede entregar. Sin embargo en este film si lo veremos haciendo unas secuencias de peleas bastante normales y promedios, soltando golpes, disparos, enfrentamientos cuerpo a cuerpo los cuales no parecen ser un problema para él. Está en buena condición física pero con sus limitaciones obvias. Lo dicho, hay acción, hay suspenso porque al final es una persecusión en contra las mafias y esta esa vibra de venganza que a mucha gente le gusta, la típica del justiciero que busca justicia, valga de redundancia, y no menos importante: paz.
Jean-Claude Van Damme is 63 years old, it is logical that we are not going to see him in any scene doing more than he can deliver. However in this film we will see him doing some pretty normal and average fight sequences, throwing punches, shooting, hand-to-hand confrontations which don't seem to be a problem for him. He's in good physical condition but with his obvious limitations. That said, there's action, there's suspense because in the end it's a chase against the mafias and there's that revenge vibe that a lot of people like, the typical vigilante looking for justice, redundancy aside, and not least: peace.
Al tener muchas heridas de su pasado Hatch es un tipo cerrado con unos códigos muy marcados, no deja que nadie se le acerca por temor a que sean heridos o no poder cumplirles como ya le sucedió una vez. Claramente la lealtad la lleva en la sangre. En cuanto a los demás personajes honestamente no hay mucho que reseñar, todos son secundarios y giran en torno a Russell, ya sean los buenos como los malos. El importante es él. Creo que para tener tiempo sin hacer una película y teniendo en cuenta que quizás esta sea una de las últimas de Van Damme la verdad quedé conforme, no esperaba una obra maestra del cine. Como dije, es la película que pones cuando no tienes nada que hacer, desconectas el cerebro y listo.
Having many wounds from his past, Hatch is a closed guy with very strong codes, he doesn't let anyone get close to him for fear of getting hurt or not being able to fulfill them as it happened to him once before. Loyalty is clearly in his blood. As for the other characters honestly there is not much to review, all are secondary and revolve around Russell, whether good or bad. The important one is him. I think that for having time without making a movie and considering that this may be one of the last of Van Damme I was really satisfied, I did not expect a masterpiece of cinema. As I said, it's the movie you put on when you have nothing to do, you disconnect your brain and that's it.
Le doy un 6/10. Lo del la voz en off me agradó y el hecho de volver a ver a un grande como Jean-Claude Van Damme también es un plus. Dura menos de dos horas y creo que es una película que cumple mínimamente con las expectativas que uno se crea. Les dejo el tráiler por acá para que le echen un ojo.
I give it a 6/10. I liked the voice-over and the fact of seeing again a great like Jean-Claude Van Damme is also a plus. It lasts less than two hours and I think it's a movie that minimally meets the expectations that one creates. I leave the trailer here for you to take a look at it.
