Forked in the Middle of the Day

in LeoFinance2 years ago

Fork day is incoming, scheduled for tomorrow at 1200 GMT, which is 1500 my time, so I will be at work. Hopefully though, I will be able to keep an eye out for the moment it changes over, as it is always exciting.

In the past there have been some great forks and some infamously bad forks - the funniest being when the Resource Credits were introduced and it calculated people into a negative and no one could do anything for days.

Hopefully, this one goes smoothly.

At least the majority of witnesses seem ready, with 90% of the Top 20 already on version 1.26.0, with 75% needed for the fork to happen, so all systems are go.

When I was reading the announcement, there were two little things that I hadn't heard mentioned before, which is

  1. changing the "three second vote rule" so it will be possible to vote in rapid succession.
  2. that all votes count, meaning that even dust votes will force a comment onto the chain

That second one helps with immutability, but the first one is a welcome change for me, as I am often voting comments in quick succession, but more importantly, it allows me to quickly downvote long streams of Phishing spam, as I did yesterday. Waiting the three seconds and getting the pop-up warnings, is annoying.

I didn't know the haircut rule was being changed either, which is quite a big change in my opinion, so surprised there wasn't discussion around it. I will assume "best intentions" and "people far smarter than me" that it is the right move for the chain. With all the issues with stable coins this year, it is probably better to be safe than sorry.

But, you can read more here about it from the official @hiveio account:
https://peakd.com/hive/@hiveio/the-evolution-of-hive-hardfork-26

What I will mention however, is that if you aren't used to hardforks, you will likely notice that some of the services you use might not work for some time, including interfaces. This is because the changes in the blockchain code will affect the way the second-layer apps need to be coded too and this takes time, Some might be ready for the hardfork, but even then, there are likely to be disruptions while updates are applied. So, keep an eye on things like:

  • scheduled votes
  • auto voting and trails
  • interface features not working
  • sites down
  • slowdowns
  • transactions not processing

...the list goes on.

So be patient.

Don't let the disruption get to you, just get on about your day and don't stress and complain if things aren't as normal. If it ends up being a complete disaster, don't go into Discords screaming about things that you have no control over and if you are in a discord that this kind of things happen, leave.

These kinds of updates to the chain code are complex and no matter how much planning and testing are performed, there are still likely tiny pieces of coding error that go undetected, and those tiny errors can be catastrophic for the chain to function. If it all falls apart...

Go out for a walk and get some fresh air.

Hopefully though, it will run smoothly and we will not notice much on the front ends at all, but many of the applications that you might use are likely already facing disruptions. Hive-blog was out for a few minutes not so long ago too.

It's okay. Breathe.

What I find interesting about the drama around when things go wrong on Hive during hardforks, is that people take it all so seriously and act as if it will never work again. Honestly, it is not the end of the world - there is more to life than getting votes on your content, or in my case, missing a day posting. The last day I missed was because of a hardfork failing terribly - just after @Ned announced a little prematurely, that it was a huge success.

Those were the days... I wonder what became of old Ned?

So, in 15 hours from now, we are going to fork.

Should be fun!

But the best bit isn't the fork itself, it is the next six months following, where new possibilities are built on the new capabilities, like RC delegations! How long have we been waiting for it? What will the applications do with it? Will it help onboarding? Time will tell.

Happy Fork day!

don't go into Discords screaming about things that you have no control over

Scam!! It's a scam!!

I am always quite surprised by the people who are mystified by such big changes because they don't read anything on chain despite living and breathing hive

"I'm all in on Hive! I will be here forever!"

Powering down.

Lol, exactly like that 🤣🤣

and those living and breathing cause of hive (hopefully a small % :p)

I dare say the number would be higher than we would think!

so surprised there wasn't discussion around it.

This is why voting for witnesses that represent the interests of your own Hive sub-community is important.

I mean there's no doubt we have some extremely intelligent, technical minds in our top 20.

And while we're still building out the base infrastructure in the current manner, I'm happy with who is there.

But I can certainly see a time when Hive's layer-2 social and gaming communities get a real foothold, that their voices will play a much larger role in Hive governance itself.

Money will flow from the successful communities, back into HIVE and politics will go up another level.

Hopefully meaning that the witnesses will be forced to engage with their communities and actively work for them.

Anyway, I'm just thinking out loud here - Cheers to our witness overlords for what they're doing.

I would have liked to have seen more flowing back into Hive from Splinterlands too, but unfortunately, most flows out. I think that it is short-sighted in some ways, as Hive is a great platform to build upon and getting better.

I was reminded that there was talk about the haircut, but it was 9 months ago and I don't remember it being in the release notes monthly.

Overall, I think the witnesses are doing a decent job, but I really wish more of them would engage with the community and build their profile - there are still humans behind them, not just nodes :)

@splinterlands itself seems to have taken advantage to power up a ton of hive, whether or not they were a bit forced due to acc tickets and now after the HF even more for their custom Jason tx's (will be interesting to see if it puts a dent on their RC) and I see at least one of their founder has powered up a ton of hive as well. Just wished some of the players who've sold and taken profits would've taken advantage to grow their l1 stake as well as you said.

Yes, Splinterlands has, but I was more talking about the players. Some have kept powered up though and have added more.

I hear that Account creation tokens are going to be significantly more expensive, which makes it interesting to see what happens with them. Would be nice to have the hot-seat idea come into play with RC delegations attached for the games.

Doesnt seem to be that much more expensive to claim account credits so far.

I heard it might have gone 15x - seems to be pretty much the same.

I think the haircut rule was discussed something like 9 months ago. This fork is a long time coming, but that isn’t me complaining. I know it is the most significant amount of work yet, which is pretty cool we will be able to move on and discuss other things and enjoy all the improvements.

I remember it being talked of, but I haven't seen it in release notes or the numbers in recent memory - (my memory at least) :)

That's true. Honestly, I think the devs have had so much going on with this hardfork that they have been entirely focused on writing the code and less focused on updating the community which is fine. With many of the HF updates being in the developer weeds, I think the update posts have been second thought and they just forgot to include many of the topics that were decided long ago.

This hardfork was initially scheduled for late April, so I think the devs made the decision to keep coding vs stopping to make update posts.

Cool a hard fork. I'll never forget the one where we couldn't do anything for days - we all had to go have a life.

That was the last rest I had!! :D

I remember @ned mess in the middle of the worst HF ever

Past the hair, he didn't have much else :D
I wonder if he ever got the other half of the money from Sun.

He more than likely just got a full Moon.

I won't be able to follow the hardfork, therefore I won't know whether the apps will work or not. It seems better for Hiver on that day :)

However, rapid voting will help us to gain more time ans change our votes quickly if needed.

I don't know what it is meant by all votes count, but if votes under $0.02 will be counted, that's just great!

Thanks for the infos.

rapid voting is good. Rapid commenting - not good. :D

I am not sure what happens with "dust" payouts, but at least it makes a comment committed to the chain.

Thanks for the info

No worries :)

Yay RC delegations!

I'm hoping there's a way to make them easier to read as well, like currently I know I have a fair whack of RC but I can't read it x_x

Far too many numbers in there :)

You should really stop with this clickbait pictures. I came in expecting a good steak story! :p

Don't think I have experienced a HF on Hive before as I only joined maybe less then 18 months ago.

13 hours will be around midnight for me, guess I just have to bed and relive the drama on Discord in the AM. !LOLZ

And that was an awesome steak.... Interestingly, a few weeks later, the restaurant burned down.

The first hardfork I was part of was back in mid-2017, which fundamentally changed the rewards system - it was a very interesting time!

Sleep well :)

I haven't had a good steak in a while. A decent 200+ gram aged steak in Melbourne is like $70. Too rich for my blood.

That's unreal that the restaurant burned down not long after you visited. Hopefully they managed to build it up again.

RC took a massive hit with this HF. Card rentals are horrible now with my RC at 10%.....lol

Those were the days... I wonder what became of old Ned?

I am pretty sure @blanchy knows. Something involving a donkey farm, if I'm correct
haha!

Happy Fork Day!
The day after ( my birthday ).

Was it a donkey farm, or a donkey show?

Happy birthday!

Probably both haha!

Thank you :<)

Happy bday in advance!

My next birthday will take place in 364 days - It was yesterday
but thank you :^)

Great to see another upgrade on the blockchain. We need more improvements, and more innovation in order to keep up the pace with technology and other blockchains. If only we would have a native second-layer infrastructure with smart contracts, nothing could stop us!

I think that as far as general level BCs go, Hive is doing okay, at least, there isn't much else out there getting used. There needs more for sure though.

Those were the days... I wonder what became of old Ned?

Ned Stark? He was killed in the second season... 😅 !LOLZ
But seriously, I've read so much about him that for me, he is already as legendary as the characters of Game of Thrones...
!PIZZA

:D

Pity he wasn't a Lannister, at least they paid their debts...

He wanted to be master of coin so bad.

It was a pity really - there was a lot of potential - but overall, I think Hive has a far better story because of it.

The key is to be patient while updates are applied. It will run smoothly in time. Thank you for sharing this. Yes to more fun. Happy Fork Day to one and all!

Uumm - that isn't how hardforks work...

He's from the chains where that's one of the only things that can occur on them. ;p

lols.

Lots of noobs like me here. untitled.gif

Thanks for the update on when it will take place. It will happen while I am asleep and I won't be on till late at night. So I hope all the issues are resolved during the day before I get onto Hive tomorrow.

I hope it goes smoothly and no problem occurs as there must be a lot o testing

This will be my first time experiencing a hard fork . There’s always a first time for everything indeed .

God I remember the Steem hardfork and the site was down for days. I have to say it was like heroin at the time and I needed my fix.

LooooL PeakD has taken Pos1 from BT.

Go out for a walk and get some fresh air.

Yeah sometimes I feel humans (including myself) can get so worked out over little issues which don't seem to matter once we zoom out and realise there's more to life than those little issues. Thanks for the timely reminder! :)
