KUNU: A LOCAL DRINK THAT ALWAYS BRING BACK OLD MEMORIES

Hi Hiveians

Kunu is a locally made drink that is most popular in northern part of Nigeria. Though the name kunu is the name given the people from the northern part of the country call it, it is called several other names like odugba for people from benue state amd several other names that i might not.
As a family,we are originally from the place that is geographically called "middle belt" that is an area that is considered to be situated at the centre of the country though our state is kind of close to the north so more of the northern Nigeria culture,food and other things trickle in easily to our own culture and way of life. Bearing this in mind, the local kunu drink is quite popular in my state. Infact it is the number one drink you get in every party be it wedding ceremony, burial, naming ceremony amd the likes.

Growing up my mum was so good at making this local drink to the extent that she also sells it. I grew up virtually taking this drink almost every single day and it's something I really love and funny enough it's also my dad's favorite drink also. There are days where I will just hang around in the kitchen waiting for mum to be done with it for me to start feasting on it.

After several years of watching mum prepare this tasty drink I have also to an extent learnt how to prepare it though it will definitely not taste like the one mum prepares but it will definitely be close. Ill try and explain how this drink is prepared

INGREDIENTS AND PROCESS OF PREPARING KUNU
INGREDIENTS:
The ingredients used in preparing kunu include:

  1. maize
  2. guinea corn
  3. ginger
  4. water

PROCESS OF PREPARING THE LOCAL KUNU

STEP 1
BOILING OF WATER
The first thing to do after getting all your ingredients ready is to boil water enough to soak up the maize and the guinea corn

STEP 2
SOAKING OF THE MAIZE AND GUINEA CORN
After boiling water, the next thing to is to mix the maize and guinea corn in a one place and soak it in hot water. This will soften the maize and guinea corn for eas grinding.

STEP 3
GRINDING
At this stage, after soaking the maize and guinea corn in hot water for some hours, then the water is drained, and ginger is added to it and its readied for grinding. This is done withthe use of a grinding machine.

STEP 5
After grinding it into a very smooth and looking substance with somr amount of water in it, it is now ready for the final stage. At the stage it's more like cooking it but in a very unique way. Firstly water is put on fire to boil and while waiting the grinded maize and guinea corn is mixed with a little water to make it watery to a level depending on how watery you want it to come out.
Once the water is boiled, it is poured into the grinded maize and guinea corn and stirred. Once this is done, it is left to cool of and it is ready to be taken. Though it is ready to be taken at this point there is still one thing left to be done.

STAGE 6
The last thing to do is to filter the finished product and this is done because the engine cannot really grind it to the very desired level. So it is filtered to make it as smooth as possible using a silk filter.

Well, this is a wrap on the preparation of the local drink kunu and ofcource my mum would have done total justice to the description of how it is been prepared but then I tried as much as possible to put out what I learnt from my late mum.

Its funny that every single time I see rhis drink i immediately remember my late mum.
This is my love story with a very tasty local drink called kunu from Nigeria. If by any chance you come to Nigeria try have a taste of kunu and I bet you will not regret it.
