Weekend Grafting

I've worked in a number of different jobs and industries in my life. Some of them were mickey-mouse jobs and some of them weren't, but it didn't matter which of those two categories my work fell into, I took my work seriously.

There are many people that I know that eat, breathe and sleep their work. They put blood, sweat and tears into every single moment they are working and often they end up spending more of their "free" time at work than anywhere else. I don't think I agree with this idea but some people are work-a-holics and some aren't...each to their own.

A good couple of the jobs I've had have required weekend work and while I did it as it was part of the contract of employment, I can't really say that I liked doing it. It was a requirement that needed to be met which I did to the best of my ability, but there were plenty of times that I remember thinking "The beach would be nice right about now" and it didn't even matter if it was raining outside at the time.

Honestly though, I think it also depends on the team you're in, the leader you have and the general vibe of the place...if those three comprise of good quality people, then working on the weekend isn't as bad. One job I had I remember there were a few times I had to work 18hour shifts occasionally and it was through the night over a Friday night into the Saturday morning. I didn't mind these at all, in fact, I looked forward to them. Why? I had the most awesome team leader and our head co-ordinator was a really funny man. The three of us were a bit silly when we got together so there was never a dull moment and those 18 hours would go by so fast that it felt like a normal work shift. The bonus was getting paid overtime at double hours as well. I'm not really at liberty to say what the job was, but it was customer focused.

With age, I don't think it really becomes easier per se, I think we just get conditioned to having to do it sometimes. We don't have the luxury of throwing our toys out the cot either and our other priorities just have to make way for these things at times.

Do I still have to work over weekends? Sure, it happens all the time. If my company calls me and I need to sort something out, I will drop everything I am busy with to get it done, especially if it's urgent. Do I like it? I wouldn't say I like it, but I don't really mind either. The clients that I do work for rely on me and know that they're in good hands. It's the fact that I respect them and treat them well that keeps them with the company. That's also what keeps me with the company - I am valued and feel worthwhile there. All in all, that's a pretty decent combination for all involved I'd say. There's plenty of compromise and flexibility so I certainly don't resent having to give up a few hours over a weekend when required.

The one thing that I don't like about it? It totally screws up the flow of the week in my mind. Mondays feel like Wednesdays, Saturdays feel like Thursdays. It gets really confusing and can be annoying too.

"What day is it today?"
"What day is it today again?"
"Is today Tuesday? Oh, no it's Monday, sorry"
"Tomorrow is Thursday hey? Fuuuuccccckkk. It's only Tuesday!"

I worked seven days a week for many years, a stressful job that had the ability to take a lot and it worked for me because I had little choice, but did I like it? I guess I liked what I was doing, it made me feel like I was doing something valid, relevant and that helped others but I've always loved my weekends, I guess a remnant from the past as a kid growing up when weekends felt so amazing, like anything was possible.

If a yes or no answer was required, I'd say no I don't like working weekends, but it happens and I'm no less effective, diligent or focused...probably more so as I want to get that work done quickly...but no matter when I work, I do it to the best of my ability with a focus on the outcome; to do otherwise compromises me. This was the same back in the day when I was working weekends regularly and now when I work them rarely.

Speaking of working on the weekend, you're back in the community after a hiatus. Thanks for putting this together over the weekend.

I understand the 7 days a week, it's not for the faint of heart - but seems like your heart was in it even though you would have possibly preferred doing something else entirely.

Yesterday I worked like you always do - single minded focus and non stop. I was fucking exhausted at the end! 🤣

Always a pleasure to post here, I haven't been around all that much lately but feels nice to be back. Thanks for always having cool post topics ready and waiting 😊

Getting together with people and doing silly things is my passion 😂.

Getting disoriented during the week, that's my passion 😂

Working weekends is not so much, but I have had to do it. When I worked as a hairdresser, on holidays we would work late on whatever day it was 😄 I wish you a good week Em 🦋

Hello Purple 💜

How are you my friend? You are a very passionate individual 😁 Silly is awesome, getting lost in which day it is - not so much lol. I can only imagine the stories you must have heard as a hairdresser. What was the most entertaining one?

Sending hugs, have a fabulous week ahead yourself too 🦋

😆😆 Reading your posts always makes me laugh.

My Sunday has been a bit exhausting, my friend. But I'm fine. As for the stories, there aren't many. I only remember one time a girl had just had her buttocks done and went to get her feet done. We didn't even know how to seat her 🤭

Hahaha that's classic. Shame, poor girl 🤣

I'm glad to read that you are ok. Weekends can be tiring, but try to fit in some relaxing in the next one if you can. Hugs 🦋

It's Monday tomorrow.
Please don't tell Garfield.

Hahaha Vincent, I am actually surprisingly in tune with the day today - I didn't have to work over the weekend much. How was your weekend?

I hope you are well 🦋 Sending hugs

Glad to hear that.

My weekend was chill. I am trying hard to do less these days.

Also, I am about to kid sit my niece and nephew for 2 weeks ( starting around the end of this week ). longest time ever, while my twin sister and her boyfriend go on a holiday. so I need all the energy I can muster.

Wish me luck ;<)

Big hug right back at ya!

Best of luck Vincent. I know that they can be a handful at that age, but the time you spend with them is also going to leave you with memories for a lifetime. I'm sure they will enjoy their time with you. Just remember, long walks/hikes are great to get out some of that energy 😉

I'm so glad to read you are well and taking it easy, sometimes we need to do that, regroup and reset before we can start again.

😊

It sounds like you get a good sense of community from your work for the most part, which, IMO, doesn't make you a workaholic, but rather a human who values connections and productivity.

Hello @corvidae How have you been?

Absolutely true. Some people though can take it too far, but I choose to not let it get to the extreme. I've seen people before, during and after work burnout and it's not the kind of thing that I'd put on my bucket list.

Thanks so much for your comment 🦅
why doesn't Hive have a crow emoji???

Hi! Been good! I just got back from a whirlwind adventure to Hamburg. Still recovering from that. Mildy adventure-burnt, I might say.

There's a crow-ish emoji now for phones, you would think Hive would catch up...

Well, I think the most terrible thing is that the rhythm of the week is altered and you don't even know what day it is. For example, today is Friday. 😁

I woke up this morning convinced it was Tuesday. The discombobulation is most annoying.

It's Wednesday right?

It is after 12 o'clock, it is already Thursday. 😳

I had to tell Emma that the lyrics to the music she shared are 👌

I freaking wish it was already Thursday!

That's how it is when you work at the weekend, you never know what day it is, you live in confusion or it seems that every day is the same.

If one does the work with pleasure, and it is not a burden, welcome, there will always be positive and negative things, as I say, focus on the positive ones.

Thank you @emma-h2 ❤️

Living in confusion seems to be my middle name 🤣 I enjoy what I do though, so I can't really complain. Thanks so much for coming by and reading @avdesing I appreciate you.

🦋 Em

I have experienced a lot of confusion. It is a pleasure.❤️

Honestly, I so much dislike working during the weekend
I would not say you love it too but I can just say that you ate used to weekend work
Nice one!

Don't worry, plenty of people dislike it, I think it's just one of those things.
