A desperate call - The Ink Well: Prompt #119

in The Ink Welllast year

It was a rainy night, as Gregory was tossing and turning in his bed restlessly. Suddenly he felt the ringing of the telephone. Drowsily, he put his bare feet on the floor on the damp cold wood. He walked down the stairs towards the kitchen, every time he went down a step, the hems of his pajama pants got tangled between his feet.

He picked up the phone and heard a woman's voice calling out to him:

" Son come quickly to the hospital, your father is very sick, I need you here with me."

Gregory, holding his hands to his head, while moving his fingers through his curly hair, answered his mother:

" please, give me a few minutes while I get ready and go over there".

After a while, Gregory arrived at the hospital, as he walked down the long dark corridor, all he could think was "what happened to him, he was in perfect health?". He arrived at the room where his mother was, on stretcher number 8, his father was submerged in a deep sleep, his mother approached him, she told him:

"Your father suddenly had a pain in his chest, I brought him to the hospital, they are doing a series of laboratory tests to know the medical diagnosis".

Gregory, stupefied by so much verbiage from his mother, said to her:

" Tell me what you need me here for, you know I have to go to college".

Mrs. Guilov, his mother, arranging things for her husband, Mr. Guilov, replies:

" I need you to stay here , while I go home, to get clothes for your father and money, we don't know what situation may arise, anything you call me on my cell phone".

Hours later, the doctor arrives in the waiting room, he says:

" Mr. Guilov's relatives?".

Gregory gets up from the chair and says:

" I am his son, tell me what happened".

The doctor, very serious, replies

"Your father has suffered a heart attack, it is necessary to operate on him to place a cardiac stimulation device, otherwise if he repeats the heart attack he may die, I appreciate a quick response from the relative, that is from you".

Gregory became very nervous, picked up his cell phone, typed in his mother's phone number to call. The call kept ringing and ringing, his mother did not answer. Desperation levels sent Gregory's adrenaline surging. Beads of sweat ran down his face, the cell phone slipped from his hands. The young man was talking on the phone saying.

"Mother answer the call, please."

He waited a span of ten minutes, made the call again, waited for it to ring, kept saying:

"Mother please listen to the ringing and answer the call, please."

Meanwhile, her mother was at home, in the kitchen area, preparing some food to take to her husband and son, she went to get her purse, reached in, picked up her cell phone. Looking at her phone, she realized she had 18 missed calls from Gregory, she got worried, called Gregory, asked him:

"Son, what happened?"

Gregory, desperate and a little angry, answers him:

"I've been calling you for a long time and you don't answer, the doctor says he has had a heart attack, he needs to be operated on to place a cardiac stimulation device, otherwise he may die, I need you to be here to give the authorization."

His mother, with a very serene attitude explains to him:

"Son, you must take care of the decision making, while I go to the medical insurance to manage some documentation for your father".

Suddenly, Gregory felt a shiver run through his body because of the situation his mother had put him in. At three o'clock in the afternoon the doctor asked:

"Mr. Guilov's relatives."

Gregory got up, the doctor stood in front of the young man and asked:

"What have you decided to do with your father?"

Gregory, stammering, felt that his heart was coming out of his mouth, nevertheless he said:

"He must be operated on."

In the evening hours, he saw a nurse carrying his father on the stretcher to the surgical unit. He just sat in a chair, as the hours passed his body trembled with anguish. Shortly after his mother arrived, she hugged him intensely, she said to him:

"You are my greatest pride, you made the best decision, have faith, everything will be fine".

The operation lasted two hours, the doctor said:

"the operation was a success, tomorrow we will place you under observation, then we will discharge you with a small diet and medical control order".

Mr. Guilov had two days of observation, then he was discharged from the hospital. From that moment on Gregory and his mother took his father for his monthly consultation to the heart specialist.

Gregory’s mother is clever in her attempt to get her son to take responsibility of the situation. Gregory makes the right decision and, fortunately, all turns out well in the end. Thank you for sharing your story with us in The Ink Well.
