Creative Nonfiction in The Ink Well Prompt #45

Source

Welcome to The Ink Well's weekly creative nonfiction contest!

In this post, we'll announce the winners from last week's contest and provide the prompt for the coming week.

Before You Write Your Creative Nonfiction Post...

We ask that you read our Creative Nonfiction Tips post to learn about the creative nonfiction genre and review our guidelines.

Important notes:

  • Creative nonfiction stories are based on your real-life experiences.
  • We are looking for real short stories! Not advice columns, reports on crime or corruption in your city, observations on nature, recipes, religion, politics, or any other nonfiction content. Just real-life short stories.
  • Ideal story length is between 750 and 1500 words, but your story must be at least 350 words, at a minimum to be curated.
  • Please focus on quality content. Read and edit for errors! Use a grammar checker before you post your story.
  • We expect everyone who posts in The Ink Well to read and comment on at least two other stories for each one published.
  • Do not post stories featuring physical abuse, graphic violence, erotica or NSFW content.

Honorable Mentions of the Week

@rukkie
The Spirit Of Camaraderie Between Us

The feeling of camaraderie between us grows stronger every day as we always talk from time to time. She got the opportunity to work in a big fashion house and she is doing well for herself. We do visit each other from time to time.

@lightpen
Civil unrest in town

After ascertaining that the hostel was safe for us to go and sleep, we encouraged everyone to enter their rooms and sleep. Whereas the boys were ready to enter their rooms, the girls refused. They said they'd preferred to sleep in the open space than to enter their blocks where an explosive had just been evacuated.

@kemmyb
Strangers to Allies

I couldn't believe my ears. Judith was heaven-sent at that moment. Anyone watching us then would assume we were close friends in school. She helped carry my bag while I finished my registration. We walked to the dormitory together and I settled in. It was not a comfortable place but we made the best of the situation.

@jjmusa2004
FOCUS... The game changer

The result of the final-year medical examination came out negative. I had hoped it would be otherwise, even though I knew the chance was slim. However, we had an alternative: a resit of the examination three months after my colleagues had graduated and become medical doctors. Failing that second chance would mean an outright repeat of the final year.

Third Place: Wins 2 Hive

Our third place winner is @smc.arlke.oba, with the story:

Ditto

Twenty minutes later, everyone was in the party hall, music playing loudly, alcohol being passed around, and the atmosphere started to feel different. The walls of the hall were lined with mirrors from floor to ceiling, and there were lots of dim white, blue, and yellow lights with a disco ball hanging at the centre ceiling of the hall, their reflections dancing on our bodies. It was beautiful.

Second Place: Wins 3 Hive

Our second place winner is @mmykel, with the story:

Childhood

Source

My business instincts kicked in. I remember Wills telling me that programming brings imagination to life. I allowed my thoughts to run wild. I'll later suggest a product to them that can solve real-time problems as well as fetch us good money.

First Place: Wins 5 Hive

Our first place winner is @nancybriti1, with the story:

A river of people shouting: freedom, freedom

Source

Protests overflowed the country. Thousands of people went out to protest every day. The students, all young people, were at the head of the massive marches. They, with their impetuousness and rebelliousness, led with flowers, cardboard shields, violins and slogans. We teachers accompanied them in admiration for the gallantry they showed and how big they grew in the face of the adversary. Among the protesting students was my nephew: my oldest nephew.

This Week's Prompt #45:

Motivation

Motivation is an elusive force that drives us. The urge to achieve, surpass, and improve.

For this topic, there are several possible approaches. For example:

  • Reflect on a eureka moment when you realized that you had the capacity to overcome obstacles in your path.
  • You might've felt inadequate, realizing that you lacked the drive to reach for your dreams.
  • Perhaps an unexpected encounter with a mysterious stranger redirected your ambition and propelled you forward.
  • Maybe you found a diary from a bygone era written by a family member whose accomplishments inspired and motivated you.

Tell us about it! And remember to integrate storytelling elements like characters, scene setting, dialogue and action to bring your story to life!

Have fun and good luck! We look forward to reading your stories.

Thanks for reading

I would like to partake in this new prompt, but I have a couple of questions. I understand that every image used must be properly sourced. What about AI generated images, even they are properly sourced in the article, are they allowed or completely banned?
