Smile, Baby

On our way home, Honour's mum played ’Smile’ by Katy Perry. I didn't know the song then, but it was the perfect music for me at that moment. I remember taking a deep breath and smiling at my little self.

“Girl, there are so many things to be thankful for. Why worry when you can do it. Get up and be the attractive girl you are” I told myself, and my spirit became revived.
The chorus of the song resonated with the energy I craved and before I knew it I was singing along and my cousin joined.

Stealing habit

We made it three blocks before the wail of cop sirens sent us running. My legs burned as we ducked through familiar back alleys. But soon the footsteps behind us grew fainter. We’d actually done it - pulled off an armed robbery at age fifteen. I should’ve felt pumped up and proud. Instead I just felt kinda sick.

James and I laid low for near a week before the guilt broke me. Late one night I slipped out my bedroom window and walked to the nearest police station. My legs shook as I turned myself in, but some part of me knew I had to make things right. The cops said the terrified shop owner refused to press charges given my age. But James got locked up since he was eighteen.

Together, Nelson and Abena went on a journey of discovery. They spent time together laughing, picking flowers, fishing and sharing their hidden fear. One evening, Nelson walked up to Abena and asked her the question he had been meaning to ask her. He held her two hands gently and said to her “How were you able to walk quietly into my life, find the keys to my heart then stole it away from me?”. Abena replied “I guess the only mission given to me by God was to Steal your heart” “You did a very good job at that” Nelson replied.

A tale of the brave

"Have you ever entered the hut before?" Lily, the inquisitive one, asked.

"Yes, have you ever entered the haunted hut?" Rose, who was Lily's little sister, asked too.

"The day I managed to enter, there was a giant bird inside. And it flapped its wings so hard that I was blown far away outside by the wind it made." Gregory couldn't even keep up with the amount of false tales he told his friends.

My stolen friend

"Good morning, Sophia; good morning, Kemi." I said, faking a smile in an attempt to conceal my discomfort and jealousy.

"Good morning, Stella; we didn't see you leave the hostel." Sophia said as she sat down opposite me with Kemi by her side.

At this point, I needed to cover my tracks. "I wanted to tidy up an assignment before class." I replied, hoping they'd not ask further. I was very uncomfortable, especially as Kemi sat mute on the table. I stole glances at Kemi, who apparently had stolen my best friend, and I felt intimidated in addition to the jealousy that coursed through my veins.

Caught By The Web Of Good Humor

Some weeks later, I was sitting under a locust bean tree with Abraham during the break hour, conversing and laughing only to raise my head and see Lovelyn standing in front of me, "Oh my God! What's this surprise for?" I asked, trying to act tough. Honestly, my legs were shaking, but I composed myself.

"Emreal, right? Sorry I didn't mean to startle you, I am Lovelyn," she replied. "Stop acting like you don't know me and Who doesn't know the almighty Love in this school? I mean you are like the school's signboard, the lady everyone likes," I replied romantically.
