Esther Solar y su familia son víctimas de una Maldición , la de morir por aquello a lo que más le temen, gracias a está maldición , todos los Solar han adoptado medidas desmedidas con tal de no ser víctimas de ella, lo que los ha llevado a tener una vida en extremo … aislada y rara .Esther quien está decidida a no seguir los pasos de su familia , y con ayuda de Jonah Smallwood (joven delincuente, compañero odioso y su crush de la infancia,) han decidido enfrentarse a todos aquellos miedos qué ha tenido Esther desde niña y los que ha ido anotando en su Lista casi definitiva de sus peores pesadillas , esto con el fín de poder romper la maldición.

Este libro llegó a mí debido a su autora , ella es la creadora de uno de mis libros favoritos del año pasado, “ la casa de las grietas” un libro increíblemente oscuro que me saco de un bloqueo lector y, en el que aún pienso ,así que buscando más de sus obras escritas encontré ese título, y con esta portada tan bonita ,y un título tan curioso decidí arriesgarme a leerlo , esperando encontrarme un romance juvenil ligero y esponjoso, con algunas toques y tropos característicos de este tipo de libros juveniles y de Romance.

Este libro me dejó con la boca abierta , y sentí que pase una aventura , muy al estilo de la película de una serie de eventos desafortunados , con unos toques de Tim Burton y me recordó a aquellas películas como Coraline ,que tenían un ambiente y temas oscuros para un público adolescente.

This book came to me because of her author, she is the author of one of my favorite books from last year, “The House of Cracks” an incredibly dark book that got me out of a reading block and, which I still think about,So while searching for more of his written works I found that title, and with this beautiful cover, and such a curious title, I decided to risk reading it, hoping to find a light and fluffy youth romance, with some touches and tropes characteristic of this type of youth and Romance books.

This book left me with my mouth open, and I felt like an adventure was happening, very much in the style of the movie about a series of unfortunate events, with a few touches of Tim Burton and reminded me of those films like Coraline, which had a dark atmosphere and themes for a teenage audience.
Empecemos con Esther , nuestra protagonista, y de cuyos ojos percibimos está historia, es una chica de 17 años , totalmente asustada y bastante traumada debido a una serie de enfermedades mentales que ha envuelto a su familia, ella ha vivido toda su vida siendo cautiva de una extraña maldición que aqueja a su familia, y es qué los “Solar” han estado malditos desde hace años, condenados a morir por aquello que más los aterra, desde el abuelo de Esther quien la mismísima muerte le presagio que moriría ahogado y desarrollo un fobia al agua, hasta el miedo a la oscuridad de su hermano Eugene , cuya fobia lo ha condenado a ser esclavo de la luz, la agarofobia de su padre ,que lo mantiene condenado a un sótano, y el miedo a la mala suerte de su madre que la mantiene en un estado de querer seguir cuántos presagios y supersticiones pueda aferrarse.
Algo que me gustó mucho de Esther es que ella personifica mucho lo que se siente tener ansiedad, como son los síntomas, y esa sensación de culpabilidad que sientes al tenerla , sus pensamientos son muy reales y cercanos te puedes identificar si alguna vez lo has experimentado,sobre todo ante el miedo a lo desconocido y su impotencia de no saber cómo ayudar a su familia ,tambien me parece que está muy bien expuesta su relación con sus padres ,y como sus enfermedades han deteriorado tanto la relación tan bonita que tenía con ellos , hasta terminar en una relación bastante trágica en la que la mitad del tiempo Esther intenta ser una especie de “madre” para ellos y su hermano y la otra mitad solo fingir que nada de lo que está pasando la afecta.
Y por otro lado tenemos a Jonah, quien es un chico interesante y que entre el mundo de pesadillas que vive Esther día a día , aparece como si fuera una luciérnaga entre la oscuridad, un chico carismático y divertido con un gran valentía contagiosa, pero no solo se muestra como un caballero blanco, sinó como un personaje complejo lidiando con los problemas de su vida y responsabilidades,a la final del día también es un simple adolescente lidiando con lo duro de la vida.

Something that I really liked about Esther is that she personifies what it feels like to have anxiety, such as the symptoms, and that feeling of guilt that you feel when having it, her thoughts are very real and close you can identify if you have ever experienced it, especially in the face of the fear of the unknown and their helplessness of not knowing how to help their family,It also seems to me that his relationship with his parents is very well exposed, and how his illnesses have so deteriorated the beautiful relationship he had with them, until ending up in a rather tragic relationship in which half the time Esther tries to be a kind of “mother” to them and her brother and the other half just pretend that nothing that's happening affects her.
And on the other hand we have Jonah, who is an interesting boy and among the world of nightmares that Esther lives day by day, he appears as if he were a firefly among the darkness, a charismatic and funny boy with great contagious bravery, but he not only shows himself as a white knight, but as a complex character dealing with the problems of his life and responsibilities, at the end of the day he is also a simple teenager dealing with the hard things in life.
Un personaje que amé , y qué me dejó pensando fue el de Eugene , con la forma casi poética en la que describe Esther a su hermano , pareciera que es más un ser sobrenatural que una persona , puedes sentir el miedo de él y su angustia visto a través de los ojos de Esther, pero no solo eso sí no el temor y la preocupación de ella de perder a su hermano y no poder hacer nada para salvarlo, pero siento que fue un buen uso para qué como lectores empaticemos con el padecimiento de Eugene , quien tiene una terrible fobia a la oscuridad , pero no solo eso , por lo que habla y como describe lo que ve “allí” nos hace pensar que probablemente trate de un padecimiento más intenso como la esquizofrenia o alguna enfermedad que lo hace tener alucinaciones, también es bueno mencionar que Eugene está crónicamente deprimido y que esté tópico se toca mucho a lo largo del libro y vemos su desarrollo a medida que avanza la historia. Algo que me sorprendió del libro es que aunque está clasificado como juvenil , al tener estos tópicos fuertes que tocan pueden causar bastante impresión, no lo recomendaría para personas sensibles o que estos temas puedan desencadenar algún angustia o ataqué de ansiedad.
El otro personaje el Hephzibah , la amiga “casi Fantasma” de Esther y quién tiene una especie de mutismo selectivo, y solo se comunica con Esther por lenguaje de señas, me gustó que aunque es un personaje casi secundario , siempre está presente, es aventurera ,y una amiga increíble , siempre parece estar para todos y a diferencia de Esther , ella siempre parece estar cómoda en su propia piel .

A character that I loved, and what left me thinking was Eugene, with the almost poetic way in which Esther describes her brother, it seems that he is more of a supernatural being than a person, You can feel his fear and anguish seen through Esther's eyes, but not only that but also her fear and worry of losing her brother and not being able to do anything to save him, but I feel that it was a good use so that as readers we empathize with Eugene's suffering,who has a terrible phobia of the dark, but not only that, because of what he talks about and how he describes what he sees “there” makes us think that he is probably dealing with a more intense condition such as schizophrenia or some illness that makes him hallucinate, it is also good to mention that Eugene is chronically depressed and this topic is touched on a lot throughout the book and we see his development as the story progresses. Something that surprised me about the book is that although it is classified as juvenile, having these strong topics that they touch can cause quite an impression, I would not recommend it for sensitive people or that these topics can trigger some anguish or anxiety attack.
The other character, Hephzibah, Esther's "almost Ghost" friend and who has a kind of selective mutism, and only communicates with Esther through sign language,I liked that although she is an almost secondary character, she is always present, she is adventurous, and an incredible friend,She always seems to be there for everyone and unlike Esther, she always seems to be comfortable in her own skin.

En conclusión es un muy buen libro , un viaje a enfrentar a todos esos miedos que tenemos mientras crecemos, a encontrarse uno mismo y aceptarse , el transitar de la adolescencia a la adultez , los problemas familiares y como estos te afectan en todos los aspectos de tu vida ,algo que me encantó fue el toque sombrío que que tiene , juega con la narración y te mete en un ambiente fantasioso y sobrenatural en el que estás constantemente preguntándote si lo que está pasando es real o solo la imaginación de Esther ,y por el detalle de las enfermedades mentales y como estás te pueden afectar sea que la tengas tú o un ser querido, y es que a veces la cruda realidad de la vida aterra más que los monstruos y fantasmas.

In conclusion, it is a very good book, a journey to face all those fears that we have while growing up,to find oneself and accept oneself, the transition from adolescence to adulthood, family problems and how they affect you in all aspects of your life,Something that I loved was the somber touch it has, it plays with the narrative and puts you in a fantastical and supernatural environment in which you are constantly wondering If what is happening is real or just Esther's imagination, and because of the detail of mental illnesses and how you are, they can affect you whether you or a loved one has it, and that is. Sometimes the harsh reality of life is scarier than monsters and ghosts.

Hola, no conocía este libro ni a su autora, pero se muy interesante y me gusta que trate sobre los padecimientos mentales, me da curiosidad saber cómo lo resuelven.

Muchas gracias 😊💜 , jejeje me gustó hacer los fan arts y darle caras a los protagonistas ,no es un libro muy conocído y no parece haber mucho sobre él, totalmente de acuerdo , lo que más me gustó fue el manejo real de los trastornos mentales y que se tomen con seriedad y realismo en la lectura,es uno de los puntos que más me gustó.
