Hola de nuevo aventureras y aventureros de la fantasía y la ciencia ficción, han sido días difíciles para mí, supongo que todos tenemos nuestros días malos, pero no quiero que eso me detenga. Hoy les traigo algo muy especial. Viajaremos de nuevo a los Siete Reinos y descubriremos grandes datos y curiosidades sobre la saga de Juego de Tronos.
Esta vez no se trata algo dedicado al lore de los libros como tal sino en mi opinión algo más jugoso, hoy exploraremos la idea que originalmente tenía George RR Martin sobre sus novelas y lo que pudo haber sido la historia original que hoy conocemos de la saga de libros de Canción de Hielo y Fuego, sin duda que a los fanáticos de estos libros les gustará mucho y los sorprenderá. Hello again adventurers and adventurers of fantasy and science fiction, it's been hard days for me, I guess we all have our bad days, but I don't want that to stop me. Today I bring you something very special. We will travel again to the Seven Kingdoms and discover great facts and curiosities about the Game of Thrones saga.
This time it is not something dedicated to the lore of the books as such but in my opinion something juicier, today we will explore the idea that George RR Martin originally had about his novels and what could have been the original story that we know today of the Song of Ice and Fire books saga, no doubt that fans of these books will like it a lot and will surprise them. Una carta peculiar | A peculiar letter
Hace veintiocho años, concretamente en el año 1993 el autor George RR Martin enviaba una carta a su editor Ralph donde le explicaba de manera bastante breve y resumida su visión de una nueva saga de novela de fantasía que estaba escribiendo que llevaba por nombre Juego de Tronos.
El primer libro de esta saga vería la luz 1996, tres años más tarde pero con una gran cantidad de cambios. A partir de allí la historia de este universo fue mutando, creciendo y desarrollándose hasta ser el fenómeno cultural y global que conocemos hoy en día.

No te copiaré aquí el contenido de dicha carta porque creo que sería esforzarse poco pero te daré mi opinión, comentarios y resumen sobre lo que me ha parecido y lo que he leído de la misma, te recomiendo que tú mismo si te interesa vayas y la leas con tus propios ojitos de aventurero.
Twenty-eight years ago, specifically in 1993, the author George RR Martin sent a letter to his publisher Ralph where he explained in a rather brief and summarized way his vision of a new saga of fantasy novel he was writing called Game of Thrones.
The first book of this saga would see the light 1996, three years later but with a lot of changes. From then on, the story of this universe mutated, grew and developed until it became the cultural and global phenomenon we know today.

I will not copy here the content of this letter because I think it would be a little effort but I will give you my opinion, comments and summary of what I thought and what I have read of it, I recommend that you yourself if you are interested go and read it with your own little eyes of adventurer.
Al principio serían tres | Initially, there would be three
En el primer párrafo de la carta se nos habla ya del nombre que llevaría la saga y el primer libro; la saga llevaría por nombre Canción de Hielo y Fuego, la primera novela se llamaría Juego de Tronos. Este dato absolutamente todos lo conocemos, lo que seguro no sabías es que no estaba contemplado que fuesen seis o siete libros, originalmente Canción de Hielo y Fuego serían una trilogía; cuyos títulos serían Juego de Tronos, luego Danza de Dragones y por ultimo Vientos de Invierno.
Evidentemente sabemos que no fue así, la historia fue creciendo como menciona Martin en los párrafos que siguen y sabemos que el segundo libro no es Danza de Dragones, sino Choque de Reyes y que el tercer libro es Tormenta de Espadas, siendo Danza de Dragones el quinto ejemplar y Vientos de Invierno el sexto.
In the first paragraph of the letter we are already told about the name of the saga and the first book; the saga would be called Song of Ice and Fire, the first novel would be called Game of Thrones. We all know this fact, what you probably did not know is that it was not planned to be six or seven books, originally A Song of Ice and Fire would be a trilogy; whose titles would be Game of Thrones, then Dance of Dragons and finally Winds of Winter.
Evidently we know that it was not like that, the story was growing as Martin mentions in the following paragraphs and we know that the second book is not Dance of Dragons, but Clash of Kings and that the third book is Storm of Swords, being Dance of Dragons the fifth book and Winds of Winter the sixth.

Esto ocurrió de esta forma debido no solo a la editorial, el propio Martin admitió que a él no le gustaba tener una columna vertebral rígida en el esquema de sus novelas e historias, él decía que si tenía una visión poco flexible de la trama y que si sabía exactamente en qué dirección iba la historia perdería el interés en seguir escribiéndolo.
Sin embargo, también admitió que tenía ideas muy claras sobre varios de sus personajes sobre todo los que él consideraba los más importantes, así como sus tramas y de la estructura general de la historia.
Cabe destacar que el destino de muchos de los personajes, no solo principales sino los secundarios serían muy diferentes tanto en la serie como en la historia resultante publicada que todos hemos leído.
This happened this way not only because of the publisher, Martin himself admitted that he did not like to have a rigid backbone in the outline of his novels and stories, he said that if he had an inflexible vision of the plot and if he knew exactly in which direction the story was going he would lose interest in continuing to write it.
However, he also admitted that he had very clear ideas about several of his characters, especially those he considered the most important, as well as their plots and the general structure of the story.
It should be noted that the fate of many of the characters, not only the main ones but also the secondary ones, would be very different both in the series and in the resulting published story that we have all read.
El incidente incitador | The inciting incident
En el tercer párrafo Martin nos habla de los tres grandes conflictos que se gestaran en su mundo imaginario, que se entrelazaran entre ellos y sentaran las bases fundamentales de lo que se leerá.
Los “grandes conflictos” estarían distribuidos a lo largo de los tres libros de la trilogía; el primero de ellos sería la trama del conflicto entre la casa Stark y la casa Lannister una trama llena de traiciones, intriga política, asesinatos, conspiraciones, artimañas maquiavélicas y todo lo que hizo famoso a Juego de Tronos en un principio, dicha trama también giraría en torno a la obtención del Trono de Hierro.
Esta trama tendría consigo grandes cambios como por ejemplo un muy ambicioso y sediento de poder Jaime Lannister quien ansiaba para sí el Trono de Hierro, una Sansa Stark mucho menos inocente que la que conocemos, fría y calculadora, una Sansa Stark que contraería matrimonio de forma voluntaria con Joffrey, traicionaría a su familia y antepondría a su marido y a su hijo (así es tiene un hijo con Joffrey) por encima de sus padres y hermanos cuando el momento llegase.
También se nos habla de un amor secreto existente entre Arya y Jon, un Tyrion Lannister que entablaría una amistad estrecha con las niñas Stark y se alejaría poco a poco de su familia.
Esta trama sería el grueso del libro de Juego de Tronos, el primero de todos; La segunda amenaza que George Martin tenía prevista estaba al otro lado del Mar Angosto, una amenaza que planeaba poner a Westeros de rodillas, una violenta y hermosa Daenerys Targaryen, la última de los señores dragón (curiosa descripción) preparaba a una gran horda de jinetes Dothraki para cruzar el mar e invadir Westeros. Esta sería la trama principal del segundo libro que llevaría por nombre Danza de Dragones.
Es muy curiosa la descripción que da Martin sobre Daenerys lo que nos hace pensar que su personalidad y la caracterización que tiene en los libros y en la serie de HBO hubiera sido muy diferente de seguir la historia como se tenía prevista en un principio.
Quiero que tengan una idea de hasta el punto en que la trama se ha alargado y crecido pues se nos habla de que ya en este segundo volumen Daenerys Targaryen ya estaba alistándose para invadir Westeros, y en la historia que conocemos aún no se ha puesto en marcha con dichos planes de manera tan contundente. De hecho, tras los cinco libros que llevamos de la saga ella aún sigue en el continente de Essos y de allí no se ha movido aún.
El último gran conflicto y el más grande y épico según nos cuenta el autor es el que se esconde tras el Muro, más allá de las llanuras heladas del norte del continente de Westeros, donde criaturas demoniacas de leyendas pasadas levantas ejércitos incontables de muertos vivientes y amenazan con sumergir al mundo en la eterna sobra y oscuridad.
Lo único que se interpone ente esta amenaza es El Muro y un reducido grupo de hombres que visten de negro conocidos como la Guardia Nocturna, en este libro tendría lugar la épica batalla final que reuniría a personajes que quedaron de los volúmenes anteriores, culminando todo en un final increíble. La historia de estos eventos y de la Guardia Nocturna serían el eje principal del tercer libro que llevaría por nombre Vientos de Invierno pero este se ha alargado tanto que terminaría siendo el sexto volumen y todavía no lo tenemos en nuestras manos…
In the third paragraph, Martin tells us about the three great conflicts that will be gestated in his imaginary world, which will be intertwined between them and will lay the fundamental foundations of what will be read.
The "great conflicts" would be distributed throughout the three books of the trilogy; the first of them would be the plot of the conflict between House Stark and House Lannister, a plot full of betrayals, political intrigue, assassinations, conspiracies, Machiavellian trickery and everything that made Game of Thrones famous in the beginning, this plot would also revolve around obtaining the Iron Throne.
This plot would have major changes such as a very ambitious and power-hungry Jaime Lannister who craved for himself the Iron Throne, a Sansa Stark much less innocent than the one we know, cold and calculating, a Sansa Stark who would voluntarily marry Joffrey, betray her family and put her husband and her son (she has a son with Joffrey) before her parents and siblings when the time comes.
We are also told of a secret love existing between Arya and Jon, a Tyrion Lannister who would strike up a close friendship with the Stark girls and gradually move away from his family.
This plot would be the bulk of the Game of Thrones book, the first of all; The second threat that George Martin had planned was on the other side of the Narrow Sea, a threat that planned to bring Westeros to its knees, a violent and beautiful Daenerys Targaryen, the last of the dragon lords (curious description) was preparing a great horde of Dothraki riders to cross the sea and invade Westeros. This would be the main plot of the second book called Dance of Dragons.
It is very curious the description that Martin gives about Daenerys which makes us think that her personality and the characterization she has in the books and in the HBO series would have been very different to follow the story as originally planned.
I want you to have an idea of how far the plot has lengthened and grown as we are told that already in this second volume Daenerys Targaryen was already getting ready to invade Westeros, and in the story we know she has not yet set out with such plans in such a forceful way. In fact, after the five books so far in the saga she is still on the continent of Essos and hasn't moved from there yet.
The last great conflict and the greatest and most epic as the author tells us is the one hidden behind the Wall, beyond the frozen plains of the northern continent of Westeros, where demonic creatures of past legends raise countless armies of the undead and threaten to plunge the world into eternal darkness.
The only thing that stands in the way of this threat is The Wall and a small group of men dressed in black known as the Night's Watch, in this book would take place the epic final battle that would bring together characters left over from previous volumes, culminating all in an incredible ending. The story of these events and the Night's Watch would be the main axis of the third book that would be called Winds of Winter but this has been so long that it would end up being the sixth volume and we still do not have it in our hands...
Vaya que hubo cambios | There have been changes
Podemos ver que George RR Martin tenía una visión un tanto diferente al resultado final de sus novelas, una un tanto más compacta pero parece que igual de bien elaborada, lastimosamente quizás nunca sabremos cómo termina esta singular primera versión de lo que pudo ser Canción de Hielo y Fuego.
Sin embargo, la carta nos deja muchos datos interesantes, entre ellas lo que podría ser el final de algunos de los principales personajes de los libros. Pero de esto hablaremos en el siguiente capítulo concerniente a esta carta.

We can see that George RR Martin had a somewhat different vision to the final result of his novels, a somewhat more compact but it seems that just as well elaborated, unfortunately perhaps we will never know how this unique first version of what could have been A Song of Ice and Fire ends.
However, the letter leaves us with many interesting facts, among them what could be the end of some of the main characters of the books. But we will talk about this in the next chapter concerning this letter.
