Preparing for cochinita pibil, Mayan traditional food for the Day of the Dead

"I am from Oaxaca, so my mother-in-law taught me this dish."

My friend's wife's mother was preparing cochinita pibil, a traditional Mayan dish, as she explained. The father was outside the hut, digging a hole in the ground to cook the cochinita pibil, and then stoking the fire with firewood.

「私はOaxaca出身だから、この料理は姑さんに教えてもらったの」

友人の奥さんのお母さんはその様に説明しながら、マヤの伝統料理である、Cochinita pibil の準備をしていました。 お父さんは小屋の外で、その Cochinita pibil を調理するために地面に穴を掘って、そこに薪をくべ火をおこしていました。

We prepared the Cochinita pibil that mom had made in the hut and put it in the basement oven that dad had built. It was truly a family effort to make the Cochinita pibil and prepare for The Day of the Dead celebration with the whole family. It was a great memory for me to be able to participate in this traditional Mayan festival. It seems that the number of families making cochinita pibil in this traditional way is decreasing, so I was very happy to have such a precious experience.

お母さんが小屋で作った Cochinita pibil をお父さんが作った地下オーブンに入れて、準備を進めました。 本当に家族みんなで Cochinita pibil を作って、家族皆で The Day of the Dead のお祝いの準備をしました。 マヤの伝統的なお祭りに参加することが出来て、とても良い思い出になりました。 このような伝統的な調理方法で Cochinita pibil を作っている家庭もどんどん少なくなっている様で、この様な貴重な経験を体験することが出来て本当にうれしかったです。

The cochinita pibil is placed in the basement oven prepared by the father, and everyone wraps it neatly in banana leaves. The mother's cochinita pibil is wrapped in banana leaves and then covered with leaves from other trees that have been prepared. A lot of leaves were needed, which were also collected by everyone. I felt that the children were learning about this traditional Mayan culture as they watched the adults at work. I was enjoying this precious experience with a beer in my hand, which my friend gave me.

Cochinita pibil をお父さんが準備した地下オーブンに置き、そして、みんなでバナナの葉っぱできれいに包みます。 お母さんが作った Cochinita pibil がきれいにバナナの葉っぱで包まれて、そして、その上に準備した他の木々の葉っぱで覆いつくします。 たくさんの葉っぱが必要で、その葉っぱもみんなで集めました。 子供たちは大人たちが仕事をしている姿を見ながら、このマヤの伝統文化を学んでいるんだろうなぁと感じていました。 わたしは友人からもらったビールを片手に、この貴重な体験を満喫していました。

I would play in the yard with my friends' relatives and their daughters, drinking beer and eating corn snacks my mother made. Mexican food is really delicious, and I grew to love the Mayan and Oaxacan dishes my mother made. My mother only spoke Spanish and we communicated with her through gestures, but I felt that I would definitely be able to communicate with everyone in Spanish next time I come back.

わたしは友人の親戚や娘さんと庭で遊びながらビールを飲んだり、お母さんが作ってくれたトウモロコシのお菓子を食べていました。 メキシコ料理は本当に美味しくて、お母さんの作るマヤの料理やオアハカの料理が大好きになりました。 お母さんはスペイン語しか話せず、身振り手振りでコミュニケーションを行ったのですが、今度来た時は必ずスペイン語でみんなと会話が出来たらいいなぁと感じました。
