La infancia (incluida la adolescencia) es, sin duda, la "edad de oro" —usando el término del poeta griego Hesíodo— de nuestra vida. Refiero a ello porque en ella se fue haciendo no solo mi "educación sentimental" (Flaubert), sino también el gusto por el arte y el despertar del conocimiento (ambos pueden estar en aquella). Y hoy quiero evocar una "epifanía" (Joyce) que se inició en esa etapa.
Childhood (including adolescence) is undoubtedly the "golden age" - to use the term of the Greek poet Hesiod - of our life. I refer to it because it was there that not only my "sentimental education" (Flaubert) was made, but also the taste for art and the awakening of knowledge (both can be in that one). And today I want to evoke an "epiphany" (Joyce) that began at that stage.
Recuerdo que siendo acólito en la Iglesia Catedral de mi ciudad (Cumaná, Venezuela), en mis ratos libres, que eran muchos, solía hojear un ejemplar grande de la Santa Biblia (quizás de una de las tantas reediciones de la publicada por Montaner a finales del siglo XIX), ubicado en un atril a un lado del altar mayor. Parado frente a él, iba pasando página a página, y me detenía en unas impresionantes ilustraciones que acompañaban el texto. Ya sabía leer (unos 12 o 13 años) y podía identificar un nombre: Gustave Doré. No lo fijé del todo entonces, pero luego se me reveló su importancia.
Gustave Doré, artista francés fallecido el 23 de enero de 1883, ha sido el gran ilustrador de obras literarias universales. Desde la Biblia, como he indicado, pasando por la Divina Comedia de Dante, Don Quijote de la Mancha de Cervantes, El Paraíso Perdido de Milton, cuentos maravillosos como "El Gato con botas", o de Edgar Allan Poe, en una larga lista.
Entre los rasgos más atractivos de su obra están la confección de un arte que parece conjugar algo de la imaginería medieval con el "tenebrismo" barroco (al menos en las ilustraciones que me han atraído), y el dominio asombroso del grabado. Sus figuraciones han dado lugar al imaginario existente tanto en el área cristiana como en la cultura general.
Me detendré, seguidamente, en la reproducción de algunas de las ilustraciones de cuatro de las obras más emblemáticas, selección verdaderamente difícil.

I remember being an acolyte in the Cathedral Church of my city (Cumaná, Venezuela), in my free time, which were many, I used to leaf through a large copy of the Holy Bible (perhaps one of the many reeditions of the one published by Montaner at the end of the 19th century), located on a lectern on one side of the main altar. Standing in front of it, I would turn page by page, and I would stop at some impressive illustrations that accompanied the text. I could already read (about 12 or 13 years old) and I could identify a name: Gustave Doré. I didn't quite fixate on it then, but later its significance was revealed to me.
Gustave Doré, a French artist who died on January 23, 1883, was the great illustrator of universal literary works. From the Bible, as I have indicated, through Dante's Divine Comedy, Cervantes' Don Quixote de la Mancha, Milton's Paradise Lost, wonderful tales such as "Puss in Boots", or Edgar Allan Poe's, in a long list.
Among the most attractive features of his work are the confection of an art that seems to conjugate something of medieval imagery with baroque "tenebrism" (at least in the illustrations that have attracted me), and the astonishing mastery of engraving. His figurations have given rise to the existing imagery both in the Christian area and in general culture.
I will now stop to reproduce some of the illustrations of four of the most emblematic works, a truly difficult selection.

Tres momentos del extenso y complejo relato bíblico, que Doré ilustró en más de 200 grabados: creación, castigo y parusía. Mi imaginación de niño quedó impresionada para siempre.
Luego, siendo lector adulto, pude acceder a ilustraciones de otras obras y apreciar a plenitud su arte.
Three moments of the long and complex biblical story, which Doré illustrated in more than 200 engravings: creation, punishment and parousia. My imagination as a child was forever impressed.
Later, as an adult reader, I was able to access illustrations of other works and fully appreciate his art.
