Just to the east of London City airport, there is a small nature reserve that runs along the Thames path towards Dartford crossing.
Nestled on the river bank are some 'concrete barges'. As the name suggests, concrete was used in the construction process to reinforce the steel frame that the barge was built on.
In all, around 200 vessels were built for the intention of water and fuel resupply missions during WW1 but the history is largely unknown.
Documented movements are few and far between about the use case and why they were ultimately moved here after the war. I'm sure the local wildlife appreciate a solid structure to call home.
Take care everyone!
