Haciendo un repaso mental de la cantidad de deportes que sigo, he llegado a la conclusión que la enorme mayoría de ellos jamás los he practicado, sospecho que lo mismo le ocurre a un gran porcentaje de los miembros activos y a los lectores de nuestra comunidad deportiva.
Es un dato curioso, pero absolutamente demostrativo de la gran simpatía que los deportes despiertan en todas las comunidades en general y en cada individuo que pisa esta tierra en particular, no creo que haya otra actividad humana que tenga esa marca distintiva, o quizás, pensándolo bien, sí. La música se me ocurre en estos momentos como algo que a muchísima gente gusta, aunque jamás se hayan acercado siquiera a una guitarra, un piano o una flauta. Como sea, no hay muchas, eso es seguro.
El golf es un deporte extraordinario, por supuesto desde mi punto de vista. Es totalmente técnico y relajante, cuando estoy parado frente a la pelotita con el palo dispuesto a impactar y preparado mentalmente para ejecutar la enorme cantidad de detalles que debo tener en cuenta para que ese golpe sea consistente, viaje en la dirección correcta y por la distancia estimada, nada más ocurre, la mente se enfoca en ello y cualquier otra cosa, las preocupaciones, por ejemplo, desaparecen. Ni que decir ir caminando entre la grama prolija, los árboles frondosos, las bellas lagunas y la flora y fauna que brindan tributo al entorno.
Se que muchos ven golf por TV y nunca lo han practicado, pero también sé que les gustaría enormemente estar en esos lugares, jugando, sin saberlo ya los ha atrapado.
Hoy comienza el segundo torneo de los 4 que conforman el Grand Slam, ese conjunto seleccionado de cuatro torneos que son los más importantes que se disputan en todo el mundo y que brinda prestigio y dinero a los ganadores. En ese sentido, un formato similar al del tenis profesional.
El torneo es el PGA Championship que rota de escenario cada año, en esta ocasión se disputa en el campo de juego Valhalla Golf Club que se encuentra ubicado en Louisville en el estado de Kentucky en los Estados Unidos de Norteamérica, 3 de los cuatro torneos mayores se juegan en USA y uno solo en el Reino Unido, lugar de origen de este deporte. Esta si es una diferencia importante con el tenis, en ese deporte sus cuatro torneos mayores se juegan en países distintos: Australia, Inglaterra, Francia y Estados Unidos y además en cuatro superficies de juego diferentes.
De los cuatro torneos mayores de golf solo uno se juega siempre en el mismo campo, Augusta National y por tradición es el primero de cada temporada disputándose cada año durante el mes de abril. El ganador de este año fue Scottie Scheffler, el número uno del mundo y principal candidato para este segundo torneo de gran importancia del calendario anual de la PGA. Los otros tres torneos mayores cambian de sede cada año y el calendario y ubicación se determina con varios años de anticipación, de más está decir que los elegidos deben estar entre los mejores campos del mundo y su presentación para el torneo debería ser impecable. Generalmente lo es, pero como este deporte se juega al aire libre, siempre puede haber imprevistos climáticos que podrían derivar en campos no tan perfectos como es de suponer.
Como ya dije, el principal candidato para quedarse con el título es el norteamericano Scottie Scheffler pero no le será fácil, toda una gran cantidad de golfistas de primer nivel mundial intentarán impedir que siga cosechando triunfos. En los papeles su principal oponente será el Norirlandés Rory McIlroy, otrora niño prodigio que dio señales en su juventud de ser el heredero de grandes campeones como Jack Nicklaus o el propio Tiger Woods ganando cuatro torneos mayores en poco tiempo (dos veces justamente este campeonato), pero allí quedó y en los últimos 10 años ha ganado muchos torneos de menor categoría, pero por distintas causas no ha vuelto a imponerse en uno de estos grandes.
El campeón defensor es Brooks Koepka, jugador estadounidense proveniente del LIV tour y un especialista en torneos mayores que ya lleva 5 títulos en este tipo de torneos y 3 de ellos fueron en esta misma competencia, será un duro rival a vencer.
Otro golfista que también amagó con llegar a ser un gran campeón es Jordan Spieth quien tiene 3 majors en su carrera, pero sus actuaciones de los últimos años lo alejan un poco en la consideración previa, no ha funcionado bien y no parece encaminar su golf hacia una vuelta de gran calidad.
Estos torneos son tan importantes que aquí se dejan de lado las diferencias y especulaciones, juegan miembros del circuito PGA, del europeo y del millonario y controvertido LIV que se ha llevado a fuerza de la oferta de premios fabulosas y torneos de solo tres días en vez de los cuatro habituales, a una gran camada de jugadores prestigiosos de los otros tours.
Entre los latinos tendremos a Joaquín Niemann de Chile, Camilo Villegas de Colombia y Emiliano Grillo y Alejandro Tosti de Argentina, a ellos agregamos a los españoles Jon Rham, David Puig y Adrián Otaegui, el italiano Francesco Molinari y el francés Víctor Perez.
Como generalmente ocurre, la mayor participación corresponde a golfistas norteamericanos entre los que se encuentra el extraordinario Tiger Woods cuyas posibilidades son escasas, principalmente debido a sus problemas físicos y su edad, jamás un golfista de 49 años ha ganado un major en toda la historia del golf moderno.

Gracias @tonyes, hablando de Tiger, en este preciso momento, cuando le faltan 3 hoyos para finalizar la primera vuelta, se encuentra en par de cancha, nueve golpes por detrás del único líder Xander Schauffele que viene jugando maravillosamente y está a punto de quebrar el récord de este trazado para una vuelta. Tiger no está jugando mal, alternó buenas y malas.

Tengo tiempo que no veo un major, si mal no recuerdo el último fue el que ganó Tiger Woods ya verdad que fue de los mejores que ví. No solía ver mucho golf ⛳, pero pro Tiger me interesó un poco más este deporte.

Si mal no recuerdo el último torneo mayor que ganó Tiger fue el Masters de Augusta allá por 2019. Respecto a este campeonato mayor que se está disputando desde ayer, lo ganó 4 veces, 3 en forma consecutiva entre los años 2006 y 2008.
